Gettin' Groggy with It (GGWI) Recipe

Grog
is said to have been created to help prevent scurvy aboard British ships, though it only succeeded in getting the seamen drunk. Getting Groggy with It (GGWI) sails this traditional drink straight into the 21st century. Swapping out the water with Good Earth tea provides a flavorful base (and an illusion of healthfulness). GGWI should be doled out in mugs at intimate gatherings—because, as they say, the larger the crew, the higher the risk of mutiny.

INGREDIENTS
  • 4 tea bags Good Earth tea
  • 1 quart hot (not boiling) water
  • 1 ounce cognac (or brandy)
  • 4 ounces dark rum (such as Myers’s)
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • Juice of 1/2 medium lemon
  • 15 to 20 cloves
  • Ground nutmeg
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Steep 4 tea bags in 1 quart hot water for 3 minutes.
  2. Combine tea with cognac, rum, honey, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and cloves in a medium saucepan. Stir well.
  3. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and keep warm.
  4. Serve in heatproof mugs and garnish with a pinch of ground nutmeg and a cinnamon stick.

  • Do you think that an Indian masala chai tea would work? Like Tea India? I have a lot of that at home...

  • Is there a trend going on with tea and hard spirits? I've long enjoyed a hot whisky -- water just off the boil, lemon, cloves, whisky, and sugar or honey -- but several bars in NY are now serving it with tea instead of water. I'm not sure it's an improvement.
