Godfather Recipe

Godfather
Difficulty: Easy | Makes: 1 drink

The Godfather is one of numerous cocktails named for notable films. Given the popularity of the Godfather films, few would question the source of this cocktail’s name. The practice of naming cocktails after popular films, plays, or other entertainments has long been an established tradition. The Matrix and the Reservoir Dog are now less known than the Adonis, but the Godfather is still doing favors for those who order it. We may also wonder why there were no drinks named after High Noon or Lost Weekend. For cocktails named after celebrities, see the Mary Pickford.

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 ounces Scotch
  • 1 ounce amaretto
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Pour both ingredients over ice in a chilled old-fashioned glass, and stir.

  • I drink this with Bourbon all the time. Mainly Marker's Mark, but Jack's not too bad. The Scotch has a very strong finish (though I do want to try with Blue Label); Bourbon's a lot smoother imo.

  • The Godfather recipe at drinkmixer.com has the 2:1 ratio listed by Mr. Chirico.

  • pork: i don't see why not. the mix of spicy (from the scotch) and sweet (from the amaretto) would make me think that different type of whiskey would not deter the general taste of the GF.

something i just read from wikipedia that made me question the recipe here at chow is that they say a true GF is one part scotch, one part amaretto. this is how i've been ordering it for years. although i can understand why some would want to do 2 parts scotch to 1. it makes it a lot less sweet and easier on the tummy! :)

  • Could you do this drink with bourbon?

  • I prefer the slightly softer Godmother - Amaretto and Vodka over ice. When made with premium vodka, this is a favorite.

  • i order this drink every other time i go out. unfortunately, i just moved from san diego to the sticks of the midwest and no one knows this drink. it is truly one of my favorites.
