The Metropolitans I've had are brandy/cognac cocktails, much more similar to a Manhattan. I've found the gin cocktail that a couple of you have mentioned, believe it or not, has been deemed a cosmopolitan as early as the 1930s, or more generically as a gin daisy. (Again, some will debate what constitutes a daisy, too.)
Also, JK is right on the Rose's. I'll never think of it as lime juice so much as lime syrup, but such an ingredient is the only way to go (other than homemade lime syrup) for a gimlet. Just don't put it anywhere near my margarita. The Absolut Kurant, meanwhile, is indisputably good to include in this.
Romanmk, Rose's Lime is an ingredient of its own. Indeed, if you try and make a Gimlet with fresh lime juice, the person ordering it will likely send it back.
I too thought a Metropolitan was made with gin...
Actually, I just found a number of recipes made with brandy & sweet vermouth.
Have we been wrong this whole time?! : )
Shouldn't a Metropolitan be made with gin?
Fresh lime is the only acceptable lime juice!
