Alabama Slammer (Slamma) Recipe

By the time you reach for a cordial cocktail, dinner and dessert will be well behind you. Savor it as a “digestif.”

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 1/2 ounces amaretto
  • 1/2 ounce sloe gin
  • 1 ounce Southern Comfort
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Shake all ingredients with ice; then strain into a chilled cordial glass. Vodka is substituted for amaretto in some versions, and triple sec is also added.

This recipe, while from a trusted source, may not have been tested by the CHOW food team.

  • my recollection of the alabama slammer is the combination of the ingredients above, in large quantities, pour directly into a cooler over a bag of ice. and lots of hungover people the next day. were those really the good ole days?

  • the jester is correct. an alabama slammer tends to be bi-colored (like a tequila sunrise, but not as syrupy) when served, and the customer typically stirs like mad with her/his straw to make it bright red (opaque, not see-thru). it's typically served with cherries or an orange-cherry pick. it's served in a "tall" glass, or in a hurricane glass or other foo-foo glass, but ALWAYS over ice. oj, not...+READ

  • That is COMPLETELY not an Alabama Slammer in the picture. As the editors hyperlinked only the gin part of sloe gin, I can only assume that the food stylist used real gin in place of sloe gin. Sloe gin is almost completely unrelated to gin; it's a sweet cordial made with blackthorne plums. It has a very deep crimson color, and makes the Alabama Slammer red. And the juice is typically orange juice; while lemon juice would make a more balanced cocktail, OJ is traditional.

If you enjoy Alabama Slammers, it's definitely worth trying a Red Death, a combination of an Alabama Slammer and a Kamikaze.-COLLAPSE
