Basic grog is just lime or lemon juice (not both), sugar, rum (usually dark) and water. I prefer making it with lemon juice.
proportions:
1 tablespoon of sugar or simple syrup.
1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice.
2 ounces of dark rum, or a heavy amber rum.
2 ounces of water. (This recipe has the rum/water ratio even because of ice dilution, but old recipes go anywhere from 3 parts to 2 parts water to rum ratio.)
Dissolve sugar in the lemon juice, water and rum. Pour into a cocktail shaker with cracked ice and stir until well chilled -- around 20 to 30 seconds. (If you like to shake your cocktails, go ahead and shake it, but for less time or the drink will be too watery)
Strain into cocktail glass.
You can also just drink on the rocks after a few quick stirs, though you may want to up the water to keep it from being too strong.
It also makes a nice hot drink -- just add another ounce of water and heat instead of chill it.
A great drink -- those old time sailors knew what they were doing-COLLAPSE
