Basic Brandy Cobbler

From: Field Guide to Cocktails , by Rob Chirico

In their earliest versions, cobblers and fixes were wine-based drinks shaken with ice. Over time, they have come to include any number of spirits and mixers served over crushed or cracked ice. The only real distinction is that a cobbler is 12 ounces and a fix, which appeared later in the twentieth century, is 8 ounces.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 teaspoon superfine sugar
  • 3 ounces club soda
  • 2 ounces brandy
  • 1 ounce curaçao, kirsch, or other liqueur
  • Slice of orange, lemon, or other fruit
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Dissolve the sugar in the club soda in a chilled old-fashioned glass. Add cracked ice and the spirits. Garnish with pieces of your favorite fruit. Alternatively, muddle and shake and garnish with your fruit of choice.

Variations:

Cherry Cobbler: Blend the sugar and soda with gin, cherry liqueur, and crème de cassis.

Rum Cobbler: Use rum instead of brandy.
