Sunday and Monday in Vegas: Sen, Raku, LOS

Nice, I think you will enjoy Sen. Be sure to check out their current specials in the menu, in my experience it's hard to go wrong when ordering from that page.

I like Bouchon in the Venetian for breakfast, the patisserie in Bellagio is also good.

Sunday and Monday in Vegas: Sen, Raku, LOS

The only place in SF I've had sushi is Sushi on North Beach, and that was a few years ago, but I have a positive recollection of it. Don't get me wrong, Sen's sushi is great and good value compared to other high-end places in Vegas, and I'm sure you would enjoy it. If you want excellent sushi, go there.

If you wanted to stay Japanese, I'd go to Ichiza on Spring Mountain, one of my current favorites. It's izakaya-style, lots of different dishes great for sharing, as well as all the usual Japanese suspects. While they have sushi, they have a lot of other non-sushi dishes that are a little harder to come by. Settebello in Henderson has fantastic, authentic Neapolitan-style pizza. The Peppermill on the Strip is pretty damn unique but the food isn't too hot :)

Fresh tortillas in Las Vegas?

Just to clarify, I don't know if Mariana's makes fresh tortillas... but that would be the first place I'd know to check. Hopefully the OP or somebody can report back.

Sunday and Monday in Vegas: Sen, Raku, LOS

Be sure to make a reservation at Raku ASAP. It's tiny, last time I tried to go without one, they said they could seat us in 3 hours...

May I ask your motivation in going to Sen? Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great sushi place, my favorite in town. But if I was coming from a place with access to really good sushi, I'd skip it in favor of something a bit more unique.

Have you tried Mariana's Supermarket? There's one at Sahara and Valley View and a few others around town.

LV farmers markets, other local foods?

There's a Farmer's Market in the park near my house. It's about a 5-minute walk, but I'm not sure it's even worth that trip, generally speaking. The produce comes driven in from California, and is of a perfectly fine standard, but rarely am I blown away by anything. Lately there's been 2 stands selling actual produce -- one a mixture of the usual suspects, the other only strawberries.

As janetofreno says, there are few farms here. This is the desert; it's extremely inhospitable for any type of agriculture. Outside of agriculture, there doesn't seem to be much of an artisan food scene in this town, either. I'd imagine that's a product of general tastes, as well as a large group of consumers that would forgo quality local artisans for more well-known name brands (regardless of quality).

I'd imagine the "regional" elements the server was referring to were things from California. One restaurant at the Rampart Casino in Summerlin was recently advertising specials one night a week from the Santa Monica Farmer's Market...

Oyster Bar w/ good apps., too..Las Vegas

The Tides in Red Rock has closed, to be replaced with "LBS Burger Bar", opening later this year, can't remember exactly what the sign said.

BLT Burger (Las Vegas)

Wait a while before you go, they have serious kinks to work out and were really overwhelmed July 4th weekend, even when using only half the tables.

Apart from that, the burgers weren't all that good. They were fine, decent, but nothing very special.

So Many Burgers - So Little Time (Las Vegas)

I went to BLT Burger yesterday and was really unimpressed. The burger was decent, nothing more, while two different types of fries and an order of onion rings all came out barely warm. If you still want to go and check it out, wait a while -- they still have a lot of kinks to work out. They only had half the restaurant open yesterday and were struggling to keep up.

Lotus of Siam closed July 14-16 - Las Vegas

I just popped over to the LoS site to check hours, and it's got a notice that they'll be shut July 14-16 for renovations... can't say I mind too much if they give it a decent upgrade, but thought I'd pass the word along.

Cajun shack in Las Vegas mentioned on NPR

I'd agree with your general assessment of barbecue in Vegas... but I've had some great meats from TC's, and I think that Rub is way too overpriced to merit any consideration.

That said, I think expecting anything on the level of Kreuz or elsewhere in the central Texas barbecue triangle here in Vegas might be a stretch. I'm continually amazed at just how badly people can screw up something as simple as smoked meats.

So Many Burgers - So Little Time (Las Vegas)

Best burger value on the Strip, IMO, is at BOA in the Forum Shops at Caesar's for lunch. IIRC, you can choose Kobe or prime beef, and they're $12-14 for the burger and fries. They've got a steak sandwich for similar price that's outstanding, too. Just don't think you're having a cheap lunch then start ordering their cocktails :)

Korean food in Vegas

Anybody have any recommendations? The Chinatown thread doesn't mention any and a search proved fruitless. I have a hankering for some Korean BBQ tonight and was looking for a recommendation, or some feedback on the place in Chinatown Center (Mother's, I think it's called?) or the one on Paradise in the same center as Origin India. TIA

CUT or STRIPSTEAK in LV ?

I doubt you'll be disappointed by Stripsteak. I wasn't when I dined there... but I wasn't blown away, either. I went to an event at Cut when it opened and all the food they had was excellent, and I'm very anxious to go back there, more so than any other steakhouse on the Strip. If you do go to Stripsteak, go to town on the duck fat fries, they're awesome.

That's too bad -- their fried egg sandwich with gorgonzola, bacon and frisee is one of my all-time favorites.

LAS VEGAS RIBS

Is K's still open? I thought I'd read somewhere on here that it had shut.

I went to the Adam's on Grand Canyon a while back. It was fine, nothing that stood out in my mind. I'd go back for another shot, but nothing's really pushing me to do so.

Jason's is perfectly adequate, but you really think it's worth the trip off-strip for a tourist, let alone being one of "The Best Restaurants in Las Vegas"?

'Wichcraft in the MGM, just pass the food court. Great breakfast and lunch sandwiches.

Good Pizza in Vegas... does it exist?

Settebello is fantastic. Their special pizza each week is usually worth getting, and I concur with Dave on the salads. The insalata grande is one of my favorites.

Las Vegas - best "authentic Buffalo" wings

Thanks for the replies. And double thanks for not suggesting Hooters.

Las Vegas - best "authentic Buffalo" wings

Had a request from a friend to locate the best "Buffalo" wings in Vegas. I put buffalo in quotes, as he was dining with a guy who apparently lived in Buffalo for a while and bemoaned the lack of "true Buffalo-style wings" here in LV. I've had plenty of chicken wings in town, but to be honest, I really have no idea what constitutes an authentic buffalo wing apart from Frank's Red Hot sauce. Apparently according to this guy, the wings are bigger and the meat "tastes better".

So, any ideas for the best authentic Buffalo wings in town? TIA.

Lunch in Las Vegas

Cool, I'll check out the carnitas and the fish. It would be good to catch the fresh chips -- I picked up a couple bags of their storemade ones and brought home, and they're great, especially the green jalapeno ones.

Have you been to Marche Bacchus? Not the best choice when the weather sucks, but it's great when the weather is good and you can sit outside.

Lunch in Las Vegas

Hi Dave, I greatly respect your opinion and taste... but I hit Mariana's on Friday for some tacos and wasn't all that impressed. I had the al pastor, chicken and carne asada. The al pastor was the best of the bunch, but was really greasy. The carne asada was pretty bland, and the chicken wasn't particularly exciting. What do you usually order?

A number of other folks in there were getting the seafood stews -- the shrimp one looked like it would be worth trying.

evos, henderson, nv.

Went there yesterday. Had a burger and fries, they were ok. My take on it was they were probably about as good as they can be if you remove most of the fat from a burger and fries :)

The meat had a good flavor, but was a bit dry. The fries were decent, some of them a little limp. If you want a burger but want one healthier than In N Out, it's an okay compromise. But don't expect it to be the best burger you've ever had.

need help now (Las Vegas)

I went to Togoshi on March 8, it was very much open. I hadn't seen this news on the board, but I did think to myself that it was a hell of a lot cleaner than the last time I went in there.

Shuseki in Las Vegas Chinatown

Went to Shuseki, a Japanese restaurant in the 5115 Spring Mountain strip mall (the one with Hue Thai) one night earlier this week, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had some yellowtail with yuzu and chili that was excellent, and agedashi tofu I enjoyed very much. I had the Shuseki ramen, which was a pretty straightforward ramen dish with vegetables and (I believe) ground pork. As I said, pretty straightforward, but excellent nonetheless. Companions said they enjoyed their vegetable udon and another noodle dish which I can't remember at the moment.

My reaction is to compare Shuseki to Togoshi Ramen... and I thought it was better in most every way. It's been a while since I've been to Togoshi, but I believe Shuseki's prices were comparable, if not better, and Shuseki provides a much nicer environment and ambiance.

Vegas - Lotus of Siam review

I think that green chile dip is probably about the spiciest thing I've ever tasted. It's insane.
