New Orleans on a Budget

I'll second Verti Marte. Just remember it's take out only, so you'll have to find a nice spot to eat or take it back to your hotel. Get the ALL That Jazz sandwich. Actually you might be fine getting just 2 of them and a couple of sides for all four of you. Here's their menu: http://vertimartemenu.com/ The sandwich is listed under Verti Marte Originals. Open 24/7 and they deliver.
I would also suggest The Three Muses on Frenchmen. Excellent food with the added benefit of live entertainment. Cafe Negril is host to what was formerly a Taco Truck that now operates indoors.
Other great delis include Matassas Market and Quarter Master. For a sit down place I would recommend Cafe Maspero. Not the most gourmet food in the world, but decent food with plentiful portions.
Also Lil Dizzy's at 1500 Esplanade. we're going for their Sunday brunch on our next visit because a friend spoke very positively about their bread pudding.

Now, I haven't personally eaten here, but I was recently looking at places on Dauphine and ran across Moon Wok which has some pretty positive reviews and some pretty inexpensive food. http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/57/621324...

I'm not sure how soon you're visiting, but sign up for New Orleans Living Social and Groupon emails because they sometimes have great deals on good restaurants.

What can you take out at Cafe DuMonde other than Coffee, beignets, soft drinks, and hot chocolate?

Get the All That Jazz Sandwich.

The "All That Jazz" is a bit of gooey sandwich heaven (seriously who wouldn't like to try a sandwich made of grilled ham, turkey & shrimp, swiss & american cheese with grilled mushrooms, tomatoes, on grilled french bread with "Wow Sauce" that REALLY makes you go WOW!)

Oops, I see I already pushed this sandwich above. Oh well, it's really good!

Need gluten free choices in French Quarter

It depends on the cornmeal. Some is, some isn't depending on processing. See http://glutenfreegirl.blogspot.com/20...

Please help! First Time NOLA visitor!

IMO Hurricanes and Hand Grenades are tourist drinks. That said, get your Hurricane from Lafitte's Blacksmith Shoppe (much better than Pat O's) not to mention it's a more interesting bar. Go to Pravda for the Absinthe. Go to Muriel's for a Ramos Gin Fizz and ask to sit in the Seance Lounge or on the balcony overlooking Jackson Square.

Great Poboys at Johnny's Poboys. You also might enjoy the French Market, http://www.frenchmarket.org/ the antique shops on Royal St. Here's a link for a self guided walking tour. http://tinyurl.com/b9k3h6

I think the entire FQ is beautiful and just love to walk and enjoy the architecture.

Like betheroo said, be sure to ride the St. Charles streetcar so you can see the Garden District homes.

Great coffee in New Orleans?

I haven't been but Community Coffee House http://www.communitycoffee.com/ccc/Co... on 941 Royal looks like a good possibility. Any comments from someone who's been there?

Ruth's Chris vs. Dickie Brennan's Steakhouses

My steakhouse suggestion is Crescent City Steaks @ 1001 N. Broad St. Not much as far as atmosphere is concerned, although they do have some curtained booths that are kinda fun, but the steaks are quite good. Here are some reviews http://tinyurl.com/aflp5w

Commander's Palace Creole Bread Pudding Souffle, Brennan's Bananas Foster, I also concur with nininik that Palace Cafe has great desserts.

First non fan of Verti Marte I've come across, JazzyB. I haven't eaten at Quarter Master, so I can't compare. I've also heard good things about Frank's.

Good Lunch Spot on Magazine Street?

Joey K's 3001 Magazine. Nothing fancy, just great food. I had a reuben and homemade sweet potato fries that was delicious. http://www.joeyksrestaurant.com/ Looks like they're going to be featured on the Food Network.

Another idea, lglenn5858, Verti Mart which is on the other side of the quarter, 1201 Royal, but they have delivery http://www.vertimarte.com/. Open 24/7. Get the All that Jazz sandwich, yummy!

2/7 tasting report August

Really, 5 courses in an hour and 15 minutes? As a server, I almost find that impressive; as a diner, not at all. Thanks for the review.

I haven't eaten there, but I've heard good things about Hobnobber's Cafe/Variety Bar and Restaurant at 139 Carondolet, also a search turns up Dixie Gyro at 110 Carondolet, but I'm not sure if either place is open for dinner. Deanie's seafood at 841 Iberville is reasonably priced, as is Acme. Subway 112 Royal, Mother Clucker's 132 Carondolet, Popeye's 621 Canal, Cajun Mike's Pub and Grub 116 Baronne St, and Mena's Palace (they deliver, but they close at 6:45pm.

Also found Mike Serio's Po Boys and Deli 133 St. Charles, Welty's Deli 336 Camp St, Quiznos 339 Baronne.

I'd also recommend Johnny's Po-Boys 511 St Louis, a longer walk but great, reasonably priced sandwiches.

Krewe of Boo participants?

Just found out that certain bars and restaurants will be offering special items for the Krewe of Boo organization during the Halloween season. If anyone has information on the establishments participating and/or their offerings, please respond.

Broiled or baked seafood with minimal sauce

We'd love to have a meal with some great broiled fish and/or crab, shrimp, or lobster. A delicious broiled seafood platter would be excellent. I looked at Grand Isle, but they seem to specialize in oysters which I love, but my fellow travelers aren't oyster eaters. We won't have a car so it has to be within a reasonable cab distance from the FQ.

dookey chase

I'll agree, Felix's has just about the worst gumbo I've ever had. Reminds me of opening a can of Campbell's.
