BBQ in Asheville. Recs needed for dinner

We go to Moe's at least once a week for a workday lunch and have always been happy. You can get a platter, including a huge amount of meat (pulled pork, smoked turkey or chicken, wings, or fried catfish-my fave), two sides, cornbread or hushpuppies, and a drink, all for $10, tax included. They have several special sides daily, of which the mac-n-cheese and squash casserole are my faves. You can also get a platter of three sides, bread, and a drink for $7. The service is quick and friendly, and you always leave completely full.

Hamburger- Asheville

It's in Biltmore Village, where the Depot used to be.

Looking for Asheville Restaurant with Bed Spring Decorations ...

Piazza is the only restaurant in Asheville that I know of that is decorated this way. It's on Highway 74 in Eastwood Village, across from Ingles. We have eaten there six or seven times, and it's always been great. Wood-fired pizzas that you can have prepared with any toppings you want, as long as they have it on the premises. Their website is www.piazzaeast.com.

Asheville NC foodie stuff

Amen to that! Now I'll have one for lunch since I work in South AVL!!!

Asheville NC foodie stuff

Had lunch at Roux today, and we were fairly impressed, especially considering the price. I had a chicken caprese sandwich (grilled chicken, fresh mozzarella, roasted tomato, greens, and pesto mayo on toasted ciabatta) with frites, and it was excellent. My daughter had a tossed salad (nothing special, but the lemon vinaigrette was tasty) with the small plate of truffled mac and cheese topped with pancetta. Trust me, there was nothing small about this plate-she brought half of it home. Hubby had half a hot turkey club with chicken tortilla soup, only 6 bucks. All in all, including tip, our bill came to around $40, not bad for a family of three.

Danville VA

Any ideas for a good lunch spot in Danville on Saturday? Nothing upscale, just good food.

Piazza-Asheville

Just got back from lunch there, and it was FANTASTIC. We split a Greek salad, which was huge, plenty for three or maybe even four to share. I had the 10" Pollo pizza, which is roasted chicken, caramelized onion, mozzarella, tomato, and basil. The crust was perfect, the sauce had a bit of a kick, and the chicken was juicy and flavorful. All in all, one of the best pizzas I've had in a long time. Hubby had the spaghetti with shrimp in an amitriciana (spicy tomato) sauce, which was also very tasty. We will definitely be back.

Thanksgiving in Asheville NC

What does Fiore's typically serve for Thanksgiving?

New Japanese in S. Asheville?

I've been twice, and, yes, it is more of a fast-food type place. It's good for what it is, an inexpensive place to grab a quick lunch. The people are very friendly and helpful, and the prices are excellent for the amount of food provided. (I think I paid $6.75 for hibachi shrimp, which included a ton of fried rice, lots of shrimp, and carrots.) It's not somewhere I'd go on a regular basis, but it's a nice change for lunch during the work week.

Diner Food -Asheville

The place going in where Happy Hill was is being opened by the owner of George's Deli, which is beside the Exxon at the corner of Leicester Hwy and Old County Home Road. (He's a friend of my husband's.)

Papa's and Beer-Asheville

The Brevard Road location is DEFINITELY better! In fact, we just got takeout there tonight, as we do at least twice a week. (They all know my husband there. When you go, just tell them you're part of JR's family, and they'll be really nice to you!) The Tunnel Road location is not BAD, in fact it's pretty good, but there's something different about the Brevard Road location that's just better.

Best Sandwhich in Asheville

Frank's is on the left on Sweeten Creek Road, just south of the Arden location of 12 Bones. It's immediately past the red light at Royal Pines Drive. It's very small, located in a building with a few other businesses (hair salon, tattoo parlor), so don't blink, or you may miss it.

Best Sandwhich in Asheville

I totally agree about Frank's. Their sandwiches are LOADED with ingredients, and the price is much lower than one would expect for the amount of food provided. I also like their sides, especially the cucumber-tomato salad, which has a kind of spicy/sour vinaigrette. Very nice people, also, which is a definite plus.

Asheville-eating w/abandon or if calories didn't count

Is WBCC sold at all Ingles, or just specific ones? We have celebrated the past two bdays in our family with their carrot cakes, and we were blown away both times.

Any recommendations for DC?

We are staying at the Melrose Hotel at 2430 Pennsylvania Avenue. Since we're going to be doing all the "touristy" things, we're looking for places where we can get good food, but also be able to go in very casual clothes. (Not t-shirts or anything; just nice shorts and shirts, etc.) Where's good for pizza/Italian, Mexican, seafood, American fare, and breakfast? The places that look interesting so far are Papermoon, Manny & Olga's, J. Paul's, Garrett's, Booeymonger, The Guards, and Tony & Joe's Seafood Place. Any opinions on these?

Any recommendations for DC?

My husband, 12-year old daughter, and I will be traveling to DC for a few days in late July, and I'm curious as to where to dine. Our daughter is a very good eater, not picky at all, so no worries on that score. Any ideas for good food, but not too pricey?

Asheville/Hendersonville folks?? Anybody tried Franks NY Deli???

I wholeheartedly agree. One of the best sandwiches I have had the pleasure of eating. And the people are so nice! You're right, one sandwich can feed two, and the price is really good, too.

Asheville FYI

We ate lunch there on Sunday, and while it was pretty good, I still lean toward the Brevard Road location. We will continue to try it out, though, since it is so much closer for us. I'm hoping that what was lacking will improve with a little time. Don't get me wrong, the food was very good, but there was just something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. I guess I'm just so used to the food at the other location, since we eat there at least once a week. All in all, though, worth the trip.

12 Bones-A 2nd Visit

Who do you think has the best Q in Buncombe County? I really like Luella's for the pulled pork, and I've also had some very good pulled pork at Ed Boudreaux's, which kind of surprised me. Haven't yet been to Okie Dokie's, but I hear it's good.

12 Bones-A 2nd Visit

I had only been to 12 Bones once before, and I found the visit less than stellar. However, my husband and I visited the south location for lunch today, and I have to say, my second visit was much better. I had the famously touted blueberry chipotle ribs, and while not quite as moist as I like, the flavor was really good. I also had the green beans and the "damn good corn pudding." It was damn good, as were the beans, but I just got so full that I couldn't finish my plate. All in all, I'd say it was a very satisfying lunch, but, being from the Triangle area originally, I can't agree with all the opinions that they have the best BBQ in the state.

Asheville - Gusmos is no mo'

I just miss the OLD Boston Pizza, or as my husband and I called it, "BP." I'm talking about 15 years ago, when the original owners ( I think) had it, and the pizza just had that "hmm" quality. I had never, and have never since, had pizza like that, just a very unique flavor. And their Greek salad was to die for! In fact, my mom, who has only visited Asheville on a handful of occasions, and hasn't been here in several years, always asked if we could go there for pizza. Why oh why do all my favorite places either close or change owners and go downhill?!

Asheville FYI

Oh, happy day!!! Any idea as to when they will open?

Company Holiday Party [Asheville, NC]

Any suggestions for a good place to go for a small (15 or so people) company holiday dinner? We want somewhere with good food and a bar where we can have a pretty casual fun time.

Restaurants in Asheville NC

I second the Stoney Knob recommendation-it's also one of my faves. I've eaten barbecue at Luella's on several occasions, and it has always been really good-moist and flavorful, very much in the eastern NC tradition with the vinegar-based sauce, although they do offer a tomato-based sauce as well. Their mac and cheese is great, IMO. We've had experiences at Frankie Bones that ranged from pretty okay to fabulous, but we enjoy it for lunch more so than dinner. Their lunch menu offers two "combo" options, one being the Two-Way Parlay, where you get to pick two items (several entrees, sandwiches, salads, soups, and sides from which to choose) for $7.50; the other being the Full Parlay, where you pick three items, for $8.99. They also have make-your-own s'mores, which is a lot of fun. I did not like Havana the one time I went, and Southside Cafe was a regular date destination for my husband and myself before we were married, but we haven't been more than a couple of times since we were married 13 years ago. The food was always good in the past. No, no, no to Pastabilities; it's very poor.

Asheville, NC best lunch this Sat.

One of our faves for Saturday lunch is Stoney Knob Cafe, just north of Asheville on Highway 25 (Merrimon Avenue). They have a wide variety of foods (wraps, salads, panini, burgers, pasta, gyros, fish, etc., and at least two specials) at very reasonable prices, and nearly everything I have eaten there has been delicious. My husband and I can usually eat lunch there for less than $25, and we're as satisfied as if we'd spent twice that. For example, several weeks ago I ordered the Bistecca con Gorgonzola special, which was a petite filet lightly crusted with herbs and Gorgonzola atop a bed of tomato-parmesan risotto, as well as a salad, and it came to $9.50. It was by far one of the best things I have ever tasted.

Rita's Cantina Asheville?

I haven't seen a website yet, but I did find their menu (or at least a good portion of it) last year in the Yellow Book, so if you have one of those, you'll get a fair idea of what they've got.

Rita's Cantina Asheville?

No contest-Papa's and Beer beats them hands down in terms of quality, prices, and freshly prepared food. There is an obvious difference that you can taste between Papa's and Beer, where the food is freshly prepared, and Rita's, where it's either frozen or out of a jar. A good analogy would be going to a place like Ruth's Chris for a steak, then comparing it to one at Ryan's. It's laughable.

Rita's Cantina Asheville?

I have to agree with carolmoonbeam. We had lunch there today, and while the decor is beautiful and the service was great, the food was merely okay. I had chicken chimichangas, probably my favorite food on earth, and I would also say that it was very chain-like. (BTW, I absolutely DETEST La Paz, think it's some of the worst Mexican food in the world.) My husband ordered chicken enchiladas, and he said the same thing. The chicken was a little dry, but more importantly, just kind of bland. The "chili con queso" that came with it was orange-colored, like what they used to serve at Don Pablo's or the kind I can buy in a jar on the chip aisle of the grocery store, not like the queso blanco I'm used to getting at local Mexican joints. I knew we were in trouble when the manager approached us and he was as American as we are. It just didn't have that authentically Mexican, hole-in-the-wall feel that you get from the local places. (I think even the salsa came from a jar.) I'll definitely put my money on Papa's and Beer in the future.

Rita's Cantina-Biltmore Station

Has anybody tried this place yet? Their menu was in last year's Yellow Book (I guess they planned on being open sooner than they were) and it looked pretty good. I love, love, love chimichangas, and my husband loves enchiladas, so does anyone have an opinion on these or any other items?

Asheville Area- Dining out despite economic downturn

We also love Stoney Knob, especially for lunch on Saturday. We can usually get two really good, really filling meals for around $20.00. Carabba's is another place we can eat fairly inexpensively, because most of the time we split an entree and add an extra salad, or we split a couple of apps and order salads. A few weeks ago, we split the bruschetta and shrimp scampi appetizers, then got a couple of salads. It was plenty of food, and it only cost us about $25.00.

During the week, we generally don't "dine in" at restaurants, just get takeout, so that saves money, as we're not paying those astronomically high prices for drinks. (For our family of three, tea or soft drinks can add up to as much as $7.00 to our bill, forget having a "real drink.")
