You are leaving San Diego forever; where would you eat?

Pozole at Pozoleria Dona Maria. Pork Larb at Sab E Lee. Italian sausage sandwich at Pete's Meats.

ROADTRIP from SD to Austin Texas

Blacks BBQ in Lockhart, Texas. Been there a few times, most excellent barbecue.

Quiet dining in North County

Sky Room a the La Valencia in La Jolla. Mortally quiet last time I was there.

Best Seafood Restaurant in San Diego

Moonfish is otherwise known as Opah, a fish that's not uncommon on fish house menus. Trying to be a little too cute by not using the common name in my book.

Ba Ren

This just breaks my heart...yet another of my favorites (and, a short walk from my house - such a luxury) hits the circular file. There just ain't no justice in the world.

Best Mexican in Hillcrest or Anywhere

The OP may have been thinking of Chilangos? If so, Chilangos is, regrettably, no more.

IN SEARCH OF: 99 Cent Fish Tacos, Carne Asada Burritos in PL, OB Area or Nearby

Just over the hill from OB, you can visit MXN, the former Santana's, on Rosecrans St. Loads of massive portioned Mex food at pretty reasonable prices. Probably good for your Carne Asada yearnings.

Best Bakeries or Baked Goods in San Diego?

Arely's in Clairemont Square makes some very nice bread and pastries and an absolutely magnificent croissant.

Imperial Ave Farmers Market closed down...

Went down to enjoy the food stalls today and the whole place was locked up and shuttered...this is 11:30am on a Sunday, prime time for this place and nothing doing. Bummed, but we did find a new place for guisados called El Chentin on Imperial just a couple of blocks past the farmers market. Ate at La Fachada - excellent lengua and carnitas as usual - and wandered over to see what El Chentin looked like and found a nice little place with a steam table full of guisados that looked really good in a Super Cocina kind of way.

Two questions: What happened to the Farmers Market and anyone tried El Chentin?

Fresh Whole Snapper

Truong Phat (?) market in Linda Vista...like Ranch 99, but a bit more palatable and easy to park. They often have true snapper and other varieties of snapper. Quality is not always great, but at least it's a start.

Bacalao...

Nothing wrong with it, just hate to pay the premium prices and hassle with getting down to India Street to get the occasional fix. Just looking for more options than those two.

Bacalao...

Aside from Mona Lisa and Filippi's in Little Italy, anybody have a go-to spot to purchase bacalao for home cooking?

OC hound seeks Boll Weevil-ish lunch spot in North Mission Bay area

Short drive to Rocky's from there...that's a good burger.

Log-In Problems

Why the two week limit? Not one other forum I visit has this restriction...perhaps you can let us know why there's such a short window?

Sabrett Hot Dog Stand in Clairmont

Sabretts stand is still around, just kinda spotty at times, esp. during bad weather.

San Diego taco map

Firstly, no skirt, no blown away, just noticed it wasn't posted and it's in an area where the OP only has a few locations.

Secondly, Taco Surf does make a perfectly credible Carne Asada Burrito using pretty good steak. Only been disappointed with their CAB a few times...a much better track record than most taco shops in town. The rest of their menu, I have no experience with.

Taco Surf in PB...

Need Yellow Plantains

Any Mexican grocery would have them...if you're near Clairemont, try La Tiendita near the corner of Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Clairemont Dr.

Where do they make the best French Dip sandwich in the county?

Haven't tried one yet, but I bet the French Dip at Red Tracton's would be really good!

BEST AUTHENTIC TACOS IN SAN DIEGO

I go to La Fachada almost exclusively when I want superior Tacos de Lengua. I enjoy the cabeza and carnitas tacos there as well and the occasional Huarache, but the real draw there is the lengua.

For me, carne asada is too hit and miss to take seriously as a measure of a good taco since it's so ubiquitous and fabulously over-hyped. It's too easy for these trucks and stands to make ordinary or even bad CA tacos and get away with it because of the appalling lack of sophistication in the customer base. At least, that's how I see it. Also, a bit of gristle is to be expected occasionally especially considering the street roots of tacos, they take ordinary or sub-par cuts, typically skirt or flank, and make it palatable with the marinade. Problem is most places cook it to death and that's what really ruins it.

I go to different places for different things when it comes to street tacos, trick is to know which one is best at what. One thing is for certain, I keep my expectations very low when it comes to a taco stand CA taco unless they do something out of the ordinary like use a very high grade of meat which some places do to set themselves apart. One place that stands out to me is the CA burritos at Taco Surf in PB and that's because they use choice top sirloin. Otherwise I get CA from my local Carneceria and cook it up myself as it should be: grilled and medium rare.

seeking authenic Chinese in San Diego (or area)

Ba Ren's Woo Jiang Fish is stellar, a simply addictive broth that's got me hooked.

Buying Duck Stock

Bristol Farms I believe has it in frozen form...

Costco Business Center grand opening???

Costco on Market, Northgate(?) has them by the case.

Offal - or at least Awful - in a can

You can make it with lye, but the method in Mexico is to use slaked lime.

La Fachada

The truck at La Fachada is no more, falling victim to the county's nitpicky health dept. rules and regs. They now serve tacos, gorditas, mulitas etc. from the kitchen to some tables out in the back end of the parking area. The frijoles de la olla, grilled onions and jalapenos survive as well as the good food, but the character that was brought about by the truck is gone.

A sign posted by the cajera tells us that the truck is now available from 7pm to 2:30am at 26th and Imperial. Still a treasure, but sumpin' sumpin' is missing now without the truck and unique awning butting onto the sidewalk.

Damn, that is truly a blow.

4 1/2 weeks and fine tuning my chow worthy restaurants

Try a sausage sandwich at Pete's on India St in the heart of Little Italy, old line San Diego and a superb casual lunch that isn't at all visited by tourists.
