L'As du Falafel Closed for Sukkot??
Well, OK....but my concern was whether any of these places will be open (or not) on Sukkot. The hours don't matter....we'll be there for lunch. If Mi Va Mi is open on Shabbat I assume they'll be open on Sukkot. Seems we'll be lunching there on Wednesday just to be safe! Thanks for the recommendation!
L'As du Falafel Closed for Sukkot??
Just finalizing my daily eating plans (yes, and everything else!) for next week in Paris....and my calendar is showing me that Sukkot falls on Wednesday and Thursday. Does anyone happen to know if L'As du Falafel will be closed on those days? If so, I'll just have to shift my days around!! Appreciate your help! Thanks!
Any recommendation for cafe maxx type restaurant
I'd recommend 3 Italians in Fort Lauderdale: Casa d'Angelo; Cafe Vico; Serafina. I'd also highly recommend Johnny V on Las Olas, and Cafe Sharaku. These are all great places....and worthy of your special occasion.
Best cuban restaurants with latin music in Miami Beach
Not on the beach....but there's a club with live, "nostalgic" music on Calle 8

A taste of Miami
Foodwise...the only thing that comes to mind are those chocolate alligators.....they come in 'gummy' form as well. Best bet would be to poke around a big souvenir shop near the beach and see what's available.
Cuban Sandwich in Fort Lauderdale
Wow! Nice. I work near both and pass them all the time. I will sample both and report back!! Thanks for recommending!!
Chowhound Wedding - Miami-Dade / Broward Counties
I was at a lovely wedding recently at the Embassy Suites in Deerfield Beach. The ceremony was held in a pretty gazebo on a boardwalk area across from the hotel on the beach. Really very pretty. Reception was standard hotel ballroom, food was fine, good service.
The place in Broward that I'd truly recommend is the Pelican....a lovely hotel right on the beach north of Sunrise Blvd. I've put on many events there, and recommended it so highly that a friend is having a wedding there in January. You could do your party on the rooftop or in a private patio area overlooking the beach. The food is great and they are willing to be creative with the menu. Great service, amazing view, Christy is the one to contact there.
36 hours in Fort Lauderdale!
Here are some Pompano Beach favorites:
Philomena's
906 S. Powerline Rd
--A tiny, cash only (was the last time I went) Italian place, homemade pasta...open for lunch only during the week, and dinner as well on Friday and Saturday.
La Mia Foccacia
6303 Powerline Road
--Lunch only. Possibly the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. Homemade foccacia with a variety of hot and cold combinations. Take out atmosphere with a couple of tables available if you must stay.
Panorama
900 East Atlantic Blvd.
--If you're going to be in Pompano Beach, you've got to have some Brazilian food as this is South Florida's Brazilian epicenter. Great fish stew, feijoada, croquetas de bacalhau (codfish) and yuca, fun place.
Cafe Maxx
2601 East Atlantic Blvd.
--This could be your splurge. A special place with a fabulous menu....from start to finish. Check out the website.
Taqueria Dona Raquel
793 South Dixie Hwy.
--Authentic northern Mexican place that gets lots of kudos here on CH. Been there many times and love the tacos al pastor, tortas, huge soupy shrimp cocktail....homemade tortillas. Don't be bashful if you don't speak Spanish....the staff is quite gracious.
Madras Cafe
1434 SW 26th Ave
(actually on Powerline Road just north of McNab Road)
--Excellent Indian place, popular....buffet but I think you can order off the menu as well. Nice variety of dishes, appetizers, dessert.

Gou Lou Cheong Chinese BBQ
We were craving some Pho for lunch today….headed to State Road 7…drove over to Pho Hoa….closed for vacation. Got back in the car and drove a couple blocks south to Saigon City….closed Thursday. My buddy didn’t feel like driving to Saigon City just a few blocks north. It was a sign…not a Pho day. We walked down to Gou Lou Cheong Chinese BBQ and lucked out….they were open, cooking, packing it up, and hacking up a storm. Just a takeout joint in a deserted strip mall….bbq duck, pork, and then some tripe, squid, some sticky rice in lotus leaves on the counter. We opted for bbq duck over rice, honey pork over rice. They piled it into styrofoam trays, added a little sautéed napa cabbage into the extra compartment. We ate bean paste-filled sesame balls while we waited and chatted with a family from WPB shopping for dinner for their company from North Carolina. The bbq meat was delicious, wonderfully seasoned and flavorful, the meat was perfectly cooked and the plentiful rice soaked up the flavors above. I do think the next time I go there, I will buy it by the pound to take home. Definitely a neighborhood treasure.
bamboo fire--delray
Even a week later....still recalling and savoring that wonderful meal. Enjoyed meeting all of you and sharing such great food and warmth. Although I don't post here very often (lots of deadlines and madness during the day....and a vow to stay offline at home) which is a shame because I dine everywhere and often (and yes, taking photos all the while), I am here catching up quickly every day with all of you! Looking forward to another get together....maybe sometime in the next few months???
bamboo fire--delray
....and I think so too! Fantastic from first course to last! Here are some pics.....
Lucuma
In Broward, I would try El Bodegon Market on Sample Road....or Sedano on Southgate. I think I've seen it as a frozen pulp.
paris gourmet restaurant boca raton
I was there just a couple of Friday's ago for dinner. Interesting kind of place....bistro tables, fountains and a garden in an office building atrium. You follow handmade signs into a door off the indoor parking area. We felt like we were on an urban adventure. Had a veggie panini and a nice glass of wine, my daughter had a simple salad with some goat cheese toasts...we had molten chocolate cake and homemade profiteroles for dessert. We enjoyed the food....it was fresh, simple, well prepared. Most of all we enjoyed chatting with Audrey, the owner, afterwards about Paris and the restaurant they used to have in NJ. Her and hubby run the restaurant, and their little boy has the run of the deserted atrium (he's very cute and entertained us with toy trucks and various kitchen implements....but we like that kinda stuff). I agree about not knowing how they're going to make it there....we were the only ones there...Audrey told us that the office building is half empty. If you're curious, just go for something simple like we did.
buffets with private rooms
Dragon Gourmet is not a bad looking place, nice entrance, clean...nothing fancy, of course...but nice enough for what it is, and I find the staff friendly. If your group set up camp in the party room, they'd still have to walk through the regular part of the restaurant to get to and from the buffet. I think if I planned a group event there, I'd be happy....really like the dim sum there and that's mostly what I eat when I go there. At least give them a call and see if the room's available.
buffets with private rooms
I attended a birthday party in a private room at Kyojin on Federal Highway. Dragon Gourmet Buffet in Plantation has a back room.....this place is authentic as well (great fish, crab, congee, a nice selection of dim sum).

Crepe Maker / Private Chef
Don't know where you're located, or if Chef Remi will do it (he's got a storefront bakery and catering business in Pompano).....but I recommend him:

Just had some of his pastries today and they were perfect and very French.

Nope....talking about a place on Andrews Avenue south of Oakland Park Blvd. Have to remember to look for the name next time and share it. But your recommendation for Bravo sounds great!
Best Chinese restaurant in Fort Lauderdale?
Yes, I'll second Silver Pond and Toa Toa....and add Hong Kong City BBQ and China Pavilion off of Pines Blvd. on Flamingo.

Best (quickish) weekday lunch option near FXE (Ft Laud Exec Airport)?
Grano de Mostaza is right outside FXE....I work around the corner and we've used them to cater. They are Venezuelan, their food is pretty yummy and well prepared. It's really a small place that does mostly takeout. They have daily lunch specials (i.e., oxtails, carne guisada, ropa vieja, chicken, grilled fish, etc.), Cuban sandwiches, tropical smoothies, stuffed arepas, empanadas, croquetas and all the usual sides. I think this is what you're looking for. They don't have a website....their address is 5550 NW 31st Avenue at the corner of Prospect Road.
Best Pizza in South Florida
Best New York-outerborough-type pizza that I've had in South Florida (I've been here 15 years) has to be from GG's of New York on 441 north of Commercial Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale. It's got that puffy crust, perfect tomato flavor and chewiness I remember from eating a hot slice standing in the cold at a walk-up window in Brooklyn as a kid. I've never been in the place....we've ordered pies there for the office....but I've called to compliment them and tell them they nailed it....it's a nice family operation, originally from Brooklyn (see?), here for years. While I'm a plain pie purist, their white pie (ricotta, mozzarella) is amazing.

I'm also a big fan of Anthony's Coal Fired for that type of thin crust, charred style....love it with those tiny meatballs.
Also like Pizza Time in Coral Springs....a great Bronx-style pie!

The Cheese Course in Weston is opening a store in Boca - Mizner Park
It's on the west side inside Mizner Park, towards the south end on a side street....maybe across from Starbuck's.
The Cheese Course in Weston is opening a store in Boca - Mizner Park
Love the Cheese Course in Weston lots....was in Mizner a couple of weeks ago and visited the new store there. Phenomenal seletion, and presentation, of cheese....as you can see here....
Cuban Sandwich in Fort Lauderdale
Have noticed that place forever but have never stopped....in among the car repair shops, yes? Guess I'll have to stop by soon and check it out!!
Little Havana
Previously, I posted:
When I go to Little Havana, I start at El Palacio de los Jugos on Flagler....order (and usually share) a huge portion of some the best roast pork I've ever had and sides for about $8....it's served in styrofoam and we sit on picnic tables outside (cash only). Best food, amazing variety, definitely an authentic "Cuban experience in Miami." Then we drive over to Versailles to stand outside and drink coffee, maybe order a pastry.

Cuban Sandwich in Fort Lauderdale
The only place that comes to mind in Fort Lauderdale is Las Vegas on Oakland Park Blvd. I've been there a couple of times, the food is good...never had the sandwich though....and wouldn't consider it a "must." I'm in Miami often enough and get my fill of the Cuban sandwich there. Anything else you're looking to try in Lauderdale??

Sunny Isles Beach Resturant Recommendations?
Not high range, and not on the beach, but I can recommend Little Havana on Biscayne and 127th Street...not far at all from Sunny Isles, great Cuban food.

Toronto CH'er ISO a "good" Spot To Take Mom/Dad To
How about Joe's Stone Crab? There will be 1 week left of stone crab season at that point....but the place is sure to be slammed for Mothers Day (as will every other decent restaurant). Versailles is good for local food/culture....I really like Las Culebrinas in Coconut Grove for Cuban as well.

NY hounds ISO late night dinner near Fort Lauderdale airport
The crab joint you're thinking of is The Rustic Inn. You're also right near the 17th Street Causeway....maybe a 10 minute ride from the airport. Here you can find Southport Raw Bar....just the type of place you describe.
