Hash browns in Nashville

I second Athens Family on 8th av. Sorry but Waffle House is off limits for me. I only eat food. Geez, even Shoney's potato cubes are better than that.

Nashville...finally finding some good places

The thing about Joey's crust is that it does better after a rest period. Fresh out of the oven their crust will actually crack where you try to fold it. If you let it rest,. like fresh baked bread, it will regain its flexability.

Never discount your own skills - When you cannot find what you want, learn how to do it yourself. I make my own dough from the recipes and formulae from here:

Oh, and by the way, Stephanie (girl behind the counter) is a thin and beautiful person. She no doubt does that trying to keep you skinny too(?) Next time I'm there I will ask though. Go at 3 in the afternoon and you can sit and eat with them - they don't bite.

Nashville...finally finding some good places

The reason Joey's is closed on Saturday? Try cruising the area around Ward Circle on a Saturday - Let me know if you see one car besides yours. It is in the dead center of an office park. No chance of making any money. As a backup, goto his brothers place, Mannys House of Pizza in the downtown Nashville Arcade. He is open Saturday till 4pm.

Another alternative is Picnic Pizza: http://www.picnicpizza.net/ Although you will have to call ahead as their website offers no hint of hours(?)

How can I find out if the Union Square greenmarket is open today Labor Day?

Nashville - Need a charity recommendation

You may want to think outside the bureaucratic box, for lack of better terms and reach out to the Nashville Urban Harvest.

Best Burger in Nashville?

I with you on 12 South. That pub burger is superb. The last time I went it seems they even refined it. No more guacamole on it. But superb just the same. Wash it down with a Terrapin or Sweetwater Ale.

Don't forget Blackstones burger either. I just don't care for any of their beer 'cept the special and infrequently brewed IPA

A trip to Nashville

Hello Folks,

Welcome to Nashville - enjoy your stay. If you are from NY / NJ area, brace yourself from the breakfast perspective. You will in no way find anything remotely close to the diner experience here. I will, though, put in props for Noshville, and the Loveless Cafe.

Noshville is a fairly accurate joint for a standard NY-ish breakfast. They actually have their bagels overnighted from NYC. But long and short, not so bad.

The Loveless enjoys a reputation that is discussed *a lot* down here. You have the biscuit debate, the ownership debate, and the crowd debate.

The biscuits: Folks rave about them. I don't love or hate them. But they are a wildly variable. Some days they are hockey pucks, other days they are the size of a small plum. They're biscuits.

The owners: The place is now owned by a sizable company that specializes in catering movie sets (Tomkat Inc). They seem to have *big* plans for the location in Bellevue, which makes me cynically refer to the place as the "Loveless Cafe and Theme Park" Lets hope not.

The crowds: Jesus, get your ass up early and see the difference! I have NEVER had to wait for breakfast at the Loveless - ever. I get there between 0700 and 0800. No wait period.

On my last visit to the Loveless I decided take a stand, and ordered two over easy with *soft* bacon - please. They aced the order and I will defend them for that one meal alone. The grits are decadent, the potato casserole is also wunnerful. The country ham is for locals who seem to not mind pure sodium intake.

Now back to my eternal dream of a Taylor Ham - Egg and Cheese on a Kaiser Roll from a deli on Lodi.

Oh Hai,

Lurking around the Nashville Scene food blog, I found this disturbing report.

All in all, I find the concept of cook your own food pretty disingenuous. I am going to get in my car, drive there, sit down, and then cook for myself? I have far better ingredients than those from Sysco in my own pantry. Food ought to be a craft effort, not a novelty to pass some time.
