ISO Asian restaurant for group meal in Pasadena

Thank you for all these suggestions. We'll check them out in the next few weeks to see which will work best. A second floor restaurant definitely would not work because a few of our members use walkers and/or find stairs to be difficult.

ISO Asian restaurant for group meal in Pasadena

My senior church group will be visiting the Pacific Asian Museum in Pasadena later this year. We would like to have lunch at an Asian restaurant of some type in the general area (no sushi) that can accommodate 45 people, preferably in a separate room. Any recommendations? Our budget is up to $20 including tax and tip. Sit-down meal preferred over buffet style.

Make Potato Chips in the Microwave

I burned out my microwave oven by attempting to make homemade potato chips. Once the moisture was out of the potato slices, the microwave reacted as though the oven was operating empty, sparks flew, hissing, and that was the end of my unit. I'd never try that again.

Lunch for 40 after Bob Baker Marionettes show downtown?

A senior group will be taking a chartered bus to attend a performance of "Fiesta" at the Bob Baker Marionettes theater just west of the downtown area on Temple. Since the theme of the show has a Mexican flavor, we would like to continue that with lunch at a nearby restaurant that can accommodate 40-45 people -- either Mexican, Argentine, etc. Any recommendations? Preferably a restaurant where a meal would be under $15 per person.

Mama Voule's Greek Restaurant-Westfield Culver City Mall?

Does anyone know if or when this restaurant will open in the Westfield Culver City Mall? Haven't been there for a month or so, but last time there was huge signage that it would be opening in January on the 2nd floor dining terrace.

ISO Spumoni ice cream in West L.A.

I need to buy about a gallon of spumoni ice cream in the West L.A/Beverly Hills/Culver City area for a small church luncheon in October. I'm familiar with Sorrento Italian Market in Culver City that probably has it, but hope someone has some other suggestions where it might be less expensive.

"Little Brazil", Culver City,CA-A gastronomic tour through a yet unnamed Brazilian enclave in LA

I just drove by the Brasa restaurant in the mini mall at Venice & Clarington near the downtown Culver City area and it is now closed. There is a sign in the window of an incoming taco place.

Dim Sum Take-Out in San Marino?

I will be in San Marino most of Sunday 7/26 and would like to pick up some dim sum in that area in late afternoon before driving back to West L.A. Any recommendations? Would prefer a place where it would be quick in/quick out. Much thanks.

Anatolian (Turkish) Food Festival in Orange County Today-Tomorrow

For any of you who enjoy Greek/Yugoslavian/Turkish food, today and tomorrow (4/4 & 4/5/09) are the last two days of the Anatolian Festival at the Orange County Fairgrounds. I spent time there yesterday and was so impressed with the entire fair, the size, the amount of work, and the scope of their undertaking as a first-time venture. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admnission is $10 / $8 for seniors / parking $5. There are about 30-40 food booths with Turkish food, shish-ka-bobs, baked goods, many made with filo dough, sweet and savory, "sticky" ice cream served with a flare you've never seen before using a saber, many vegetarian items, and two booths that are mini-grocery stores with lots of interesting food items to take home. Food prices are very reasonable and portions good-sized. My friend and I had chicken and lamb kabobs which were excellent along with other foods we sampled as we walked. There are music and dance presentations, gift items to buy, travel information, and much more. Be sure to see the star of the show - a white cat with one green and one blue eye, a special breed of Turkish cat, who walks around the grounds unleashed like it owns the place. My friend and I bought beautiful Murano glass pendants for only $5. A fair not to be missed, all outdoors.

Empanada Factory on Robertson?

Finally got over to the Empanada Factory (Argentinian Empanadas), bought 3 of them: chicken (plump, flavorful); mozzarella (semi-filled, no basil that I could see); and ham/cheese (semi-filled, quite good). They have about 8-10 flavors in all. Generous size, maybe 4" long. The baked, not fried, is a plus for me as fried dough sometimes overwhelms the taste of the fillings and makes all the flavors inside taste the same. They are open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., every day except Sunday. Other locations are at 1827 Ocean Front Walk, Venice; 1425 Ocean Front Walk, Venice; and 1253 N. Vine, L.A. Definitely would go back, although the inside of the place does not look that clean or tidy, and it was very HOT inside. Carry out is better than eating there. Website: argentinianempanadas.com (got this off their business card--have not actually gone there yet).

Empanada Factory on Robertson?

Indeed, it is in the former Al's Sandwich shop. I drove today and was going to stop in, but they did not open until 11 a.m., and I was 1/2 hour too early. I did not see an address on the newly painted front, but it is next to 2515 S. Robertson. Will check it out ASAP.

Lavosh Bread Rectangles-Westside

Does anyone know where I can find lavosh bread sold in rectangles on the Westside, ready for making wrap sandwiches? Many markets sell lavosh in packages that are rectangular, but when the lavosh is removed and unfolded from the package, the bread is a huge oval. I need these for a church activity on Sunday and do not have much time to run around looking for the "pre-cut" rectanglar lavosh. Many thanks!

Czech food in the South Bay area

From time to time, there have been questions asking where to find Czech food in the L.A. area. I recently became aware of a restaurant/bar/club in the South Bay area that serves Czech food:

Zina's Restaurant and Bar
4525 Calle Mayor
Torrance, CA 90505
310-378-2777

Czech friends have described this as being more of a bar with music and dancing that serves food, rather than a regular restaurant. The food is described as being very good, service rather slow though since dishes are made to order, a true mom and pop operation. Lunch is generally from 11:30 to 2:30 (excluding Sundays and Mondays), dinner from 5:30 to 10:00 daily. Their restaurant is listed in the Friday entertainment section of the Daily Breeze showing a web site that I could not access: www.netbuys.com/zinasmyspace.com/zina.... Prices are listed as $10-20.

Iced Coffee

Stop at any local 7-Eleven. You make your own drink choosing from many fresh brewed coffees, add any of the many different flavorings, then top it off with ice from the soda dispensing area. Largest cup costs only $1.49 (24 oz.). Can't beat it. You get it exactly the way you want it.

Lamb shoulder

Try calling the Top Valu market in West L.A./Culver City area, south of Culver Blvd. at 4700 Inglewood Blvd. 310-390-9630. This is a market that caters to Latinos. They have cuts of meat not usually found in the mainstream supermarkets. I love their entire store. They have a large international foods section, a nice bakery with made on-site Mexican pastries, wide variety of hot take-out foods, and usually 3-4 aqua frescas to choose from. Prices are very reasonable, especially produce where you can find ripe, ready to eat items. They are in the process of putting in a tortilleria to make fresh tortillas. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Looking for a pig to roast

Try calling Papa Cristo's Restaurant on Pico and Normandie. They might be able to help you since they are involved in roasting lambs. I would also check with Victor's Meats at National and Exposition in the Palms area. They're a great meat market and very accommodating.
