What do NYC residents really think about Dean & DeLuca?

I have never enjoyed the baked goods from D&D. They always looked amazing, the idea was greta, but everything I bought was always very dry and the best ingredients were not used. Always disappointing. I agree with everyone else on this -- fabulous to browse. Tourist trap all the way -- you can find better quality everything at better prices elsewhere. And with better help and shorter lines!

Chef Rolf Epprecht?

Anyone know what happened to Chef Rolf Epprecht formerly of Coriander in Woodbury, CT?

Thank you in advance..

Quick, Cheap, Good Food Near Port Authority?

I'm with RGR on this -- Marseille is wonderful. And West Bank also a good choice. I would avoid Metro Marche. Too many problems there and too much inconsistency.

Small wine fridge

I considered purchasing a Haier as a gift for my sommelier b.f. (should have just asked him for recs!).. but read so many terrible reviews on it that I passed. I read the company was a little obnoxious about mechanical problems, as well. And I, too, was looking at the 18 bottle storage.

Anyone been to Per Lei?

Wow -- I'm so sorry you had such a horrible experience, but thank you for sharing that with me.

Dinner in Manhattan- Midtown West

Marseille on 44th and 9th -- French brasserie. Great atmosphere, wonderful food, good wine list with really reasonable prices.

Anyone been to Per Lei?

Just wondering if anyone has been, and opinions... It's near my job, haven't been in yet...

Black & White Cookies?

LOL, I askied the same question a few weeks ago here... I didn't receive many replies. In Grand Central, I happen to think the best are at Zaro's. I found the ones at Hot&Crusty to be dry and stale. A true Black&White should be almost cake-like in texture (the cookie part), and the icing -- the chocolate side should be soft enough that you leave a fingerprtin in it, very thick and fudgy. The white side should be a hard icing, just as thick, with an orange essence. The replies I received oft-listed Glasers on the UES. I have yet to try one.

Italian for 50th Birthday Celebration

Heven't been there in quite a while -- Il Nido is very old-school. but fabulous. Excellent food, Excellent service. Perfect for a special occasion. It's mid-town East. It's a little stuffy, though.. depends what kind of atmosphere you are looking for...

Upper West Side fun

Bello Sguardo on Amsterdam btwn 79 & 80.

Recs for Manhattan dinner with suburban 14 year old?

Empire Diner? Not far from the cinema.. has a fun menu..including ice cream.. or perhaps Max Brenner (which would probably blow him away -- the whole chocolate thing..) , which is also not too far from the cinema.. and also has non-chocolate dishes..

Group dining near South Street Seaport

I haven't been there -- but check out Stella Maris. It's right across from South Street.

Sushi lunch w/ girlfriend near 48th + 2nd?

Yasuda is some of the best sushi. I would go there.

ISO Best Black & Whites

Working on my own recipe... but in the meantime, still looking for the best black & white cookies in NYC... not the deli shrink-wrapped ones. Any suggestions?

Brunch on the Upper West Side Sunday?

Go early and expect to wait where ever you choose... it is stroller central! Especially if there is nice weather on Sunday, every place is packed. I don't think I have ever had a good brunch experience in the neighborhood, and I will tell you the two most overrated brunch spots for Sundays are Nice Matin and Isabellas. Poor service and food.

Pre/Post Theater Recs for Birthday Dinner on Friday Night

I, too, am a fan of Marseille. All of my experiences there have been great -- service, food, wine. They will get you out on time for your show without you feeling rushed. I have never tried Esca, also in that neighborhood, but have read many accolades... and if you are tired of French, perhaps it's worth a try.

overrated restaurants

Totally agree with Il Buco. Indifferent service, and they often don't have have many of the items advertised on their menu.

dinner around Union Square?

Casa Mono on 17th and Irving has a great menu, something for everyone tapas... and although it is right on the square, trust me it is not touristy -- inside Tabla on the bottom floor is Bread Bar. It is less expensive with outstanding vegetarian dishes.
