"America’s 20 Best Barbecue Cities"

Have to agree here as well. I live in Houston now as well and avoid Beavers (which has been progressively going downhill overall) and Goode Co. Plus, they mention Top Gun more than the actual food at Kansas City BBQ. This list seems suspect.

Coop's Closing?

Tough to hear that Coop's is struggling. I think location does have a bit something to do with it, as that trek to LG does represent a barrier to some. The exposure of his restaurant just isn't the same. However, I think the bigger issue is the notion of what constitutes BBQ for San Diegans. I've always enjoyed Phil's, until I lived in Texas, which completely changed my perception of BBQ. BBQ in Texas is all about time & smoke and that notion, appreciation, and tradition has been around for a while. It's something that is missing in SD, partially due to the unavailability of it for so long. The type of BBQ that Phil's serves up is probably more familiar to most people. It's a catch-22, but hopefully something that a place like Coop's can break. I wish him the best.

Pizzeria Mozza (Seaport Village)

Happy that Mozza is going in and actually really happy places like Venissimo and Simply Local are going in. I'm sure for the developers, The Cheesecake Factory is a sure bet and a financial safety net. I'll keep my fingers cross in hoping Mozza sees longer lines.

I've eaten at a Bruxie in Brea. It's biggest selling point is its novelty. I have no desire to go back.

John Mueller BBQ in Houston This Weekend

No offense taken. I was just relaying my experience. John Mueller came out to tell the end of the line, which I was in, that he was sold out. He had a guy a few people in front of me hold a sign that said so. He was probably eyeballing how much he had left.

John Mueller BBQ in Houston This Weekend

Quick report: showed up around 12:50, sold out. Hugely disappointing, as the BBQ looked and smelled unreal. John had a couple of smokers going and was busy tending to customers and the meat. I should have known better than to show up when I did! Places was packed, inside and out.

Fiesta Mart? also, Veg suggestions?

I echo everyone's suggestions. Fiesta and Phoenicia Markets are probably your best bet for international items, aside from driving a bit to get to 99 Ranch or H-Mart.

I'll also throw out some more vegetarian friendly suggestions that are nearby Rice...

Greek Gods Yogurt

Greek Gods isn't real Greek yogurt. I believe it's labeled as "Greek style". You should look into Fage yogurt instead, which is strained better/more authentically.

Where to get loose tea ?

Path of Tea on Alabama is your place. British Isles in Rice Village also sells a number of loose leaf teas (for your earl grey, english breakfast).

Burger Guys

Ate for the first time at Burger Guys over the weekend and had a disappointing visit. Pretty underwhelming, given the hype on the place.

The duck fat fries were good, but about 15% of the fries were just fried beyond recognition and turned into particle board. Got 2 complimentary dipping sauces (house ketchup, chipotle aioli), both were good. Got a lankford burger, which was pretty awful. Ordered medium, center was barely pink. One side of the patty was burned to a crisp, so I guess I got half a hockey puck. The toppings (mushrooms, onions, bacon) was so unbelievably salty. I didn't even bother finishing the burger. The place was not busy in the least, so I'm not sure what's happening on the grill.

My girlfriend ordered the indianapolis burger, which was less salty, more tasty, but ultimately not cooked well IMO. She ordered it medium, but it was again cooked barely pink. Luckily, she didn't get a hockey puck.

Friendly service can't possibly save a poorly cooked patty and a vicious attack of the salt monster.

BTW, anyone possibly know what the fat percentage they are using for their ground beef? I feel like they overcome inconsistencies on the grill with a lot of fat/juice.

San Diego New Places Opening

I've eaten at Freebirds a few times. It's basically a Chipotle on steroids. You get more choices of fillings & tortillas.

Man, tremendous loss. :( I've always enjoyed their products. It seemed their product was gaining a foothold in the restaurant community too. I wish them the best and somehow pray they come back in one form or another. A step backwards for SD. Sigh.

To which hole-in-the-wall BBQ place would you go to impress?

I find the meat, especially the brisket, better at Rudy's than Goode Co and Pappas. I've been to both locations in Spring and off the 290. I will say, Goode Co on Kirby has the hole-in-the-wall ambiance.

Any sushi recommendations in Solana Beach or Del Mar ?

What the hell is going on? I've eaten at Kaito and consider it the best sushi in SD, thus I recommended going. I also stated I never ate at Shimbashi, only remembered that it was there. And yes I know it's an izakaya.

I've seen them at Major Market in the regular butcher area.

Thanks for the heads up on Shimbashi. I've never been, only remembered that it was there. Really though, for how close you are to Kaito, it's worth the drive.

It's not sushi, but if you are in the Japanese mood, maybe look into Yu Me Ya in Encinitas as well.

3rd Kaito. Worth the little drive north.

What about the new izakaya in Del Mar, Shimbashi?

Market in Del Mar also has a sushi bar, although I've never been. I've only seen it when eating in the regular restaurant. It's always packed.

I recommend HK Dim Sum. I found their dim sum quality better than Yum Yum Cha and they have better hours.
