Best bbq in houston

Within the loop, I like Gatlin's. Outside the loop, I like Rudy's on 290.

Will Pop-Ups Like LudoBites Show Up in San Diego?

Looks like Gavin Schmidt is doing a pop-up dinner on Sept 14 at El Take It Easy.

Burger Guys

Ate for the first time at Burger Guys over the weekend and had a disappointing visit. Pretty underwhelming, given the hype on the place.

The duck fat fries were good, but about 15% of the fries were just fried beyond recognition and turned into particle board. Got 2 complimentary dipping sauces (house ketchup, chipotle aioli), both were good. Got a lankford burger, which was pretty awful. Ordered medium, center was barely pink. One side of the patty was burned to a crisp, so I guess I got half a hockey puck. The toppings (mushrooms, onions, bacon) was so unbelievably salty. I didn't even bother finishing the burger. The place was not busy in the least, so I'm not sure what's happening on the grill.

My girlfriend ordered the indianapolis burger, which was less salty, more tasty, but ultimately not cooked well IMO. She ordered it medium, but it was again cooked barely pink. Luckily, she didn't get a hockey puck.

Friendly service can't possibly save a poorly cooked patty and a vicious attack of the salt monster.

BTW, anyone possibly know what the fat percentage they are using for their ground beef? I feel like they overcome inconsistencies on the grill with a lot of fat/juice.

Caribbean Restaurants in Houston

Reggae Hut.

Had the oxtails and brown stew chicken, both good.

Looking for beignets

Simple ones. Just beignets plus powdered sugar. I believe it comes with a side of jam.

Looking for beignets

I've had the beignets at Cavaillon for brunch. They are tasty.

San Diego New Places Opening

I've eaten at Freebirds a few times. It's basically a Chipotle on steroids. You get more choices of fillings & tortillas.

4 Nights in Pacific Beach. Recs please.

NU-CLE-AR WESSELS. ;)

Escargot

You can find them at Euro Food Depot as well.

Escargot

2nd Baron's. I've seen it at the RB location.

RIP Knight Salumi

Thanks for the info. What a travesty that Knight Salumi had to close up shop under those circumstances. I wish Rey Knight the best of luck in the future.

Looking for a Gourmet Grocery Store SD

Maybe try Euro Food Depot in Sorrento Valley.

Their hours are:
Wednesday and Thursday from 11am to 5pm
Friday from 11am to 6:30pm
Saturday from 10am to 2pm

RIP Knight Salumi

Man, tremendous loss. :( I've always enjoyed their products. It seemed their product was gaining a foothold in the restaurant community too. I wish them the best and somehow pray they come back in one form or another. A step backwards for SD. Sigh.

Nice, kid-friendly brunch/lunch spot w/great food for 30th bday

Echoing everyone's recs here. I had a lovely brunch recently at Coffee Cup. It's also a short walk to La Jolla Coves.

I'll also throw out The Linkery, which does brunch now, and Cafe Chloe.

To which hole-in-the-wall BBQ place would you go to impress?

I find the meat, especially the brisket, better at Rudy's than Goode Co and Pappas. I've been to both locations in Spring and off the 290. I will say, Goode Co on Kirby has the hole-in-the-wall ambiance.

Any sushi recommendations in Solana Beach or Del Mar ?

What the hell is going on? I've eaten at Kaito and consider it the best sushi in SD, thus I recommended going. I also stated I never ate at Shimbashi, only remembered that it was there. And yes I know it's an izakaya.

Marrowbones on short notice.

I've seen them at Major Market in the regular butcher area.

Any sushi recommendations in Solana Beach or Del Mar ?

Thanks for the heads up on Shimbashi. I've never been, only remembered that it was there. Really though, for how close you are to Kaito, it's worth the drive.

It's not sushi, but if you are in the Japanese mood, maybe look into Yu Me Ya in Encinitas as well.

Any sushi recommendations in Solana Beach or Del Mar ?

3rd Kaito. Worth the little drive north.

What about the new izakaya in Del Mar, Shimbashi?

Market in Del Mar also has a sushi bar, although I've never been. I've only seen it when eating in the regular restaurant. It's always packed.

Weekday dim sum in Houston

I recommend HK Dim Sum. I found their dim sum quality better than Yum Yum Cha and they have better hours.

Charcuterie

You can also get the Korean version, sundae, at Korean markets.

Where to buy Norman cider and calvados?

Try Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, I know they carry a few different ciders. I've always enjoyed Wandering Aengus.

Temecula vineyard recommendations

I visited Leonesse Cellars recently and enjoyed myself. Beautiful grounds, great staff, tasty wines. Have fun!

Good breakfast in Rancho Bernardo?

Veranda at RB Inn serves breakfast. There's also a Panera in nearby 4S Ranch.

San Diego Beer Week 2010

Due to proximity, Barons Marketplace in RB, Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, and Distiller's Outlet in Poway are my usual beer haunts. Barons is a surprising gem.

Urge Gastropub - farm-to-table?

All I could find was this blog posting about the Reading Terminal Market in Philly...

From the blog...

3) Thunder Ridge Beef ($)

* No hormones used
* No antibiotics used
* Graze grown corn fed
* Raised Humanely
* Raised in the Great Plains

I haven't eaten the food there, but I've had beers there. They have a decent tap selection - a mix of crafts, pub regulars, and some Belgians.

Best BBQ in San Diego?

I have to agree. For a long time, I thought Phil's was the best BBQ, mainly because I never really took BBQ seriously. BBQ was very generalized for me. If it was meat over a flame, I guess I considered it BBQ. Now I spend half my time in Texas and I've received a serious education in BBQ, specifically Texas BBQ. Smoke, smoke, and more smoke. No sauce.

There's so many types of BBQ and what people consider BBQ. I know that if you are looking for Texas BBQ at Phil's, it ain't going to happen. It's good for what it is, but it just isn't traditional BBQ.

MIHO Gastrotruck

From the San Diego Magazine scan on their Facebook page...

The name comes from a combination of the last names of the 2 owners: Juan Miron & Kevin Ho. Plus, it's a nod to the heritage of Miron, born and raised in TJ.

Rancho Bernardo???

I'll add Delhi Kitchen in Carmel Mountain and Mr Hummos on Poway Rd.

Handcrafted Cocktails in SD

I've always enjoyed the cocktails at Starlite. The best mule I've ever tasted. All natural juices, housemade syrups. I like the ambiance too, especially on the patio on a nice night.
