Nice dinner near Royal Sonesta, Cambridge

Helmand is really wonderful and a very short walk from the hotel.

Group Birthday Dinner on a Sunday Night?

Excellent point - thank you!

Group Birthday Dinner on a Sunday Night?

Thank you for the suggestion! I was not aware of their table in a nook.

Group Birthday Dinner on a Sunday Night?

My wonderful wife has a major “middle age” birthday coming up and I want to plan a group celebratory dinner for her on Sunday April 22 (which is not Easter or Patriots Day Weekend). Due to guest travel issues beyond my control, it will need to be on that night from about 6- 8 pm and will have about 8-10 people in all.

As she is a vegetarian (but eats eggs and diary products), I need a place that is “veggie friendly” while also being great for people who are not vegetarians. A good wine list is a must. There will be no kids. Anywhere in Boston, Cambridge, Brookline or Newton works for location. Cost is not a major issue. A private room would be preferable.

I have thought about Lala Rokh, Bistro du Midi, or EVOO. Oleana and Scampo seem too crowded or noisy to work for this dinner, although we like the food at both.

Al Dente, Santarpio's or Regina???????????

I totally agree. Regina for pizza (don't order anything fancy on your pizza) and then Modern for desert. A perfect dinner.

Cooking classes on Fundamental Techniques

The Cambridge School offers classes to the public and is vastly superior to BCAE. The Cambridge Center's recreational class schedule is here:

Enjoy!

Best Restaurants that Zagat has completely missed.

Punjab Cafe in Quincy - wonderful North Indian food and service. I have written them in for several years, but they have yet to appear.

Boston restaurants with a service shtick?

About 8 years ago I remember going to the Excelsior restaurant (now closed) on Boylston Street and noting that the service was unbelievably pretentious. For example, at the beginning of the meal they asked us if we wanted Italian bottled sparking water or "the house flat" for the table. When we asked them what they meant by the "house flat", the waiter explained that it meant tap water.

Chowhound "bum steers"

I totally agree that Santarpios is a bum steer. Mediocre pizza and lamb kebabs. To say that it is as good as or better than Pizzeria Regina on Thatcher Street is simply not true.

Not feeling the high price point.....

The Vegetarble Tasting Menu at Oleana is outstanding and not that expensive. if you want to have some meat, add a side order of the Moussaka. Great wine list too.

Going to NH... duty free or not

Also remember that lots of high quality wines and liquors are on sale every month at the NH Liquor Stores, so look for the sale items for the real bargains.

VT Food Tour

One option is to go to Hardwick - just north of Montpellier.

Claire's Restuarnt in Hardwick is a wonderful (but casual) place to eat, and you can check out lots of other food locations in and around that town.

For details on Hardwick read "The Town That Food Saved: How One Community Found Vitality In Local Food" by Ben Hewitt, or check out the article on Hardwick in Yankee Magazine:

the Hungry I, charles st

Scampo is very nice (and in your hotel), but Lala Rohk and No 9 Park are only a short walk away and are truly fabulous.

First Anniversary Dinner Location---in from out of town

The W Hotel is right in the Theater District, so you are close to the MBTA and lots of interesting places.
In order to get useful help from this board, you will need to provide a little more information. For example, what kind of food do you want or do not want? What kind of budget are you on? What is your idea of a special dinner?

Lunch near Faneuil Hall

I also recommend Sultan's Kitchen - really good Turkish food at a fair price.

Saturday Lunch Ideas?

I need ideas for a really nice place in Boston for lunch this Saturday. Really good food is a must, and, as one member of the group is a vegetarian, the place needs to be veggie-friendly. Sadly, my usual favorite dining places (Oleana, Ten Tables, EVOO and No. 9 Park) are not open for lunch. Help!

Dinner for one adventurous and one picky eater near Westin Copley?

Sorellina is very close to your hotel, and has steak for your boss and great Italian food for you.

breakfast in financial district

On a nice day, it is always fun to grab some coffee and food at a nearby Starbucks, and then walk a couple of blocks to the harbor to watch the boats.

Boston Area Chinese Buffet

Try the Fuloon in Malden. As many posts on this site have noted, Fuloon may have the best Chinese food in the Boston area, and their weekend lunch buffet is really good. Enjoy!

Anyone does an Ariel the Mermaid character cake?

Bravo MC - you get the award for the best reply of the day!

Indian in Boston

Punjab Cafe in Quincy is quite good, although it is a bit hard to reach (except by car).

Only a Boston-area hound would...

Hong Kong Eatery in Quincy has disappointed more than they've pleased

Why do you keep going back to a place that you do not like? You should try the Quincy Dynasty on Billing Road in North Quincy. The Chinese food there is quite good.

Defining food experiences in Singapore

Can you tell me what are your preferred places that serve vegetarian food?

I don't want my bday dinner to be a bust. I've eaten almost everywhere...Need new ideas.

I strongly suggest Scampo - it is exotic (eating in a jail), upscale enought for a birthday dinner, fun, has a nice wine list, and has very good (primarliy Italian) food (but don't miss the lobster pizza). Plus, parking is no problem since it is a hotel. Be sure to walk around the upstairs hotel lobby when you are there, preferably before dinner, as the way that the developer converted a 19th century jail into a modern hotel is quite interesting.

Where to buy steak

I agree with the suggestions so far. Whatever you do, do not go to Roxie's or the Hilltop Butcher Shop.
I am not sure that you really want the steaks to be bone-in, versus boneless, but I leave that up to you.

Singapore with a vegetarian

Thank you so much for the ideas!

Singapore with a vegetarian

I am off in mid-February for a week long trip to Singapore. One member of our group of three is a vegetarian (she does eat eggs, milk and other dairy products). Does anyone have any suggestions on places to eat that will satisfy both the vegetarian and non-vegetarians in my group? We are interested in food in all price ranges. Thank you.

A good place to dine south of Boston?

You really should should try the Ashmont Grill and Tavolo in Dorchester. Both of these places are a short drive from Milton, and have very good food and service.

Kizmet in Montpellier

On Saturday I took three friends to Kizmet in Montpellier VT for lunch/brunch. While the menu looked very promising, with French Toast, eggs, fruit and an interesting looking Korean dish, the food was really awful. As the host, I felt embarrassed to have picked this place. Service was slow and the staff untrained.

The eggs were loaded with grease and essentially inedible, and the Korean dish was not Korean (my Korean friend ordered it) and was also inedible. The French Toast was OK, but burned in one place.

Have other hounds had better luck here or is Kizmet simply awful all the time?
