Speaking frankly about Frank

Don't blame you! That's grounds for me to never go there! No one corrects me on the proper architecture for a Chicago style hot dog.

Hard Hat Report Vol 6

I reported on this one in vol. 5, but have more info. NW corner of 183 & Oak Knoll (strip center with Subway). Yummi Asian Fusion tacos. Website: www.yummitaco.com. Menu is up, but no date for opening. If the boring-brigade at work drags me to Subway, I will see if they updated the sign with an opening date.

Hard Hat Report Vol 5

NW corner of 183 & Oak Knoll (strip center w/Subway)-saw a sign over an empty storefront: Yummi Asian Fusion Tacos. Could be interesting. Couldn't find anything on the web yet.

Comicon restaurant recommendations

I found this post on Comic Con recommendations: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/424347. This will be my first trip to Comic-Con. I am so excited about the convention and exploring new food opportunities-even if it seems they are limited in the area.

Brownies

I got a Love Puppies Brownie in my Greenling delivery, and it was pretty tasty. It had peanut butter cups along the bottom (Peanut Butter Nut Case). Does anyone know if any stores around town have them? You can order them online (www.lovepuppiesbrownies.com), but I was just curious. I didn't see on the website where they had a list of stores.

Saw a sign for Maggiore's in the old Washington Mutual location at Lakeline & Cypress Creek (same strip as the Randall's) Looks like pizza & wings-maybe the same as the one I saw in Hutto when I Googled it.

Moonie's Burgers Now Open

I like Elevation Burger-mainly for the toppings. The burger itself is okay, but the toppings are great. I like the caramelized onions and the balsamic mustard. The fries are awesome (it's a thin fry, cooked in olive oil), so that bumps up Elevation Burger even further. It's not for everyone, but I love the place. I didn't really care for Mighty Fine (don't have a particular reason) or Terra Burger (was not flavorful, toppings were average).

Must Eats in Cedar Park...

With all the love for Moonie's, I will have to re-visit. I was not impressed, because the lettuce had that sweet smell it gets when it's been sitting out. Always turns me off, so I focused on that. I realize that's pretty picky, so I had planned to go again.

What a Find! Really Good Tacos: El Polloron Taco Trailer at Ponds Springs and Anderson Mill

I went for lunch today. Had the carnitas and the carne asada tacos. The carne asada was a little chewy, but still good. The carnitas were wonderful! That green sauce is good (and spicy). He does love his onions & cilantro, but that's okay with me. So happy to have something like this nearby. Will have to try the breakfast tacos. It's right on my way to work. Thanks so much for the discovery!

Las Vegas - Could I stay and dine well for less?

Great job and well written. I heartily agree about the bar menu at Bradley Ogden. I had the burger, and it was delicious. We ate at the bar, and the bartender was very nice, and the service great. Good food for a great deal.

Burger Bar vs BLT Burger

Has Burger Bar improved lately? When we would go a few years back, it was great, but declined after that. Has it improved again? I did like it before, but somehow was turned off the last time we went (service was not that great).

Elevation Burger - Arboretum Area

I guess I am in the minority-I liked the burgers here. However, it may just be the toppings that are masking things enough for me, so you guys might be right. I love that they have caramelized onions as an option, and the cheese on the cheeseburger is decent. I also tried the balsamic mustard, which gave it a nice zing. I have had good luck with the service-maybe it's improving. The fries are really good (even decent when they make the trip back to my office). I will be going back, as they are close to my work, and I love the toppings.

Hard Hat Report Vol 3

I saw that the Austinville sign is back up on 183 in Northwest Austin (near Anderson Mill). I heard that they are back on track to build this strip center with Austin businesses (Amy's Runtex, Zen, etc)
At 183 and Ohlen road, it looks like one of the big stores (not the Albertson's, I think, but on that side of the highway) there is being converted to an El Rancho Supermercado. Keeping my fingers crossed that this turns out to be decent, since it is much closer than Fiesta to my house.

Some places known for their chicken wings

I love the Sesame Chicken wings at Pluckers. I have never seen feathers or nodules on my wings, and I have eaten there several times. Must be my untrained eye. I do like the Buffalo Medium wings as well, but rarely get them-I love the Sesame ones too much.
I will admit, I have never had authentic Buffalo wings before, so I probably just don't know better.
I go to the Pluckers in Lakeline, and can't really complain about the service. I used to go to the one at 183 and Burnet, which is always crowded, but has decent service.
There is a little inconsistency on the size of the wings.
I guess I will just have to admit to being one of the untrained masses on this one.
The bottom line is that we are far removed from Buffalo, so a lot probably gets lost in the translation. It appears that wings are not our strong suit. Hopefully someone from there will move here and fill the void.

Vivo: I saw the sign: Cedar Park

According to a local paper, it is going in the Fajita Warehouse location. That freestanding building is something else, I think the sign is just there because it's at the front of the strip mall, and more easily visible. From what I read on the web, I'm not that excited about it, but I may give them a chance.

Be My Cupcake (Lakeline Mall)

I tried it last weekend also. I got a dozen (that is a lot of cupcakes!). I wasn't wild about the vanilla (but I like Duncan Hines white cake, so what do I know). DH liked them. I got the chocolate with the pb cup on top. I liked the chocolate cake. I also got lemon, which was also good. Yes, the frosting was a bit greasy. I wasn't wild about the red velvet. DH liked the carrot cake, but I don't think it was his favorite (and he loves carrot cake). I also wasn't wild about the strawberry cupcakes, but they were okay.
Overall, not Wow, but I admire that it is a local business, and not some cookie-cutter franchise (we have a Nothing Bundt Cakes opening by the Cedar Park Cinema, which is a chain. Sigh...)
My favorite was the lemon ones-they were quite tasty. The chocolate ones I had weren't too bad,

Food options in NW Austin/Cedar Park

I didn't like Moonies at all. The shredded lettuce in the burger had that sweet smell that it gets when it's out too long, which totally threw me off. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Also, the burger itself was a little dry.
Maybe I just miss Bubba's Icehouse. I may have been alone on that one, but I liked their huge hamburgers.

Best Salsa in Austin

I like the salsa at Camino Real (183 & Spicewood Springs-Big Lots shopping center). It is pretty standard stuff, and I don't get around to all the places mentioned here.
I also like the salsa at La Morada (Parmer/Mopac by the HEB).

Freda's Seafood Grille

I do enjoy going to Freda's (we don't do it often). Being up north, sometimes we don't feel like battling traffic, so we make do with Freda's-it is about a mile or so from my house. I have found it to be hit or miss. We love the calamari, but it seems the dipping sauces mentioned were new-they used to be served with marinara. I will have to look into the recent suggestions on this board.
At least it's locally owned.

Be My Cupcake (Lakeline Mall)

Has anyone tried this place yet? It looks like it's where the Rocky Mountain Candy Co used to be in Lakeline Mall (I am only going by the picture). From the website, it appears to be locally owned.
I will probably try it this weekend, but wondered if anyone else had tried it.
I have had a massive cake craving for ages (DH bought me a slice of HEB cake-he was trying-it was awful), and a cupcake would be awesome so that I don't have a whole cake hanging out at my house calling to me night and day.

I did do a search, but didn't find anything on this place.

Diners Drive-Ins or Dives in Austin?

I like the show-I have it set up on my DVR to record new shows. I will have to look for the Austin ones. I think it's good publicity for a place, even if we don't agree with the places that they go to. They probably don't mind the intrusion. I'd love to be there while they do a show just to see the process. There is a lot that goes into putting on a show. Although, if I wasn't expecting it, I probably would sing a different tune...

The show does highlight the locally owned, so that, to me is awesome. The only problem I have is Guy's new gig pimping TGIF. Kind of hypocritical (doesn't he own restaurants?)

Speaking of DDD-has anyone been to Mac & Ernie's in Tarpley that they profiled? Chicken fried lamb chops sound intriguing.

For Austin locations, I think a trip to Top Notch would be warranted. I love the place.

Tortas in Austin

I have had the milanesa torta at La Tapatia on 183 & Anderson Mill, and been happy with it. It did take a long time to come out (for that place-they are usually speedy),
I will have to try Taqueria Guadalajara-my friend loves going there for the breakfast tacos.

ST. Patrick's Day recommendations?

Troytempest's hunch is correct. From the NXNW website:

This St. Patrick's Day, NXNW is projected to serve it's TWO MILLIONTH PINT! To celebrate, we're serving green beer, our famous Irish Stout and delicious Irish specials. (Live music, of course!)

I read in Austin Chronicle about the special stout they do for St Pat's. The only problem will be finding a parking place. We have tried to go there, but left after circling the paring lot. So, I don't know anything about the quality of the food.

The Austin Chronicle did do an extensive piece on the great St Pat's pub crawl:

http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyroba...

(I can't believe they list Bennigan's, but I guess they do the St Pat's thing for the masses...)

Any lemonade recs?

Any recommendations for a good fresh squeezed lemonade here in town? Has anyone tried the lemonade at Mighty Fine Burgers?
I seem to remember it was pretty good at Salt Lick.
Further out of town, I had an awesome one at a food stand in Warrenton, TX during Antique Weekend (I ordered lemonade, and was in heaven when the girl yelled out "Dad-we need another lemonade", and Dad proceeded to make it right there on the spot. I was even happier when I realized the whole pitcher sized drink he was mixing was for me!
