Large tins of olive oil

Uh, actually that's not what the CI article said. The CI article explained that there was no perceivable difference in flavor between regular olive oil and EVOO when heated. The heat dissipated the phenols and other flavor compounds of the EVOO. Olive oil, even when heated still has a unique taste, just as corn oil etc.

Personally, I'm of the Thomas Keller/Bobby Flay camp wherein I use Canola oil for all my cooking.

Large tins of olive oil

Cheapy olive oil is great for cooking, and as noted by Cook's Illustrated once heated the brand doesn't matter.

However, for mind blowing EVOO, pick up a 2.5L tin of Oro Bailen or Venta Del Baron from Olive Oil Lovers, or Señorío de Vizcántar from La Tienda. Those Spanish oils will blow your mind on how great olive oils can be.

Stateside, Costco and California Olive Ranch both make great EVOO, but are a bit milder for domestic tastes.

Fish Sauce Problem

Get rid of it. There may be a risk of botulism -- and besides, fish sauce is cheap.

Your Favorite Place to Get a Grass-fed Burger and/or Steak in the San Diego Environs

Facts... okay... and they are...?

With ground beef, at least with a good quality cut and the right percentage of fat, I find the taste difference between grass feed and traditional corn finished lot feed beef minimal. WIth steaks, grass feed is very in consistent, and I've never been all that impressed. Regardless, I like Burger Lounge.

Yes, I've tasted both and the difference minimal -- at least domestically. Now dry aged beef that's another story.

+1 on Burger Lounge. Although, personally, the whole "grass fed" thing is just marketing hype.

America's Test Kitchen reviews are meaningless

Correct. The published taste tests are conducted by the Test Kitchen staff. The studio audience is just for the Cook's Country TV show. It has no input into their published results.

With that said, all taste tests are subjective and America's Test Kitchen is just one resource. ATK does a good job explaining food science and why some product taste better than others. For instance, the ATK did a great job debunking all the hype surround San Marzano tomatoes which is consistent with my palate. And yet, they did taste tests on the "best" hot sauce which was silly given the variety of styles.

Prepared lunch/dinners in San Diego (city)

Saffron offers a nice picnic basket for take out. Mona Lisa in Little Italy also has a great deli.

SGV quality chinese in past year

Dumpling Inn is good, but not new.

I've got to ask though, why would your relatives from China/Hong Kong even want to try Chinese food in the States? Seems like a sure recipe for disappointment.

Hanging in Del Mar. .

Cucina Enoteca in Flower Hill is the place to be. Sea & Smoke has a great patio, but I'm not a fan of the food.

Also if you haven't been since the remodel, the Pony Room at Rancho Valencia is worth visiting for happy hour.

Brunch at Rancho Valencia or Sea & Smoke?

Rancho Valencia. S&S is a nice space, but just doesn't have a brunch vibe.

Stuck in the Gaslamp District. HELP!

There's nothing inherently bad about the Gaslamp and its restaurants, other than they're overly touristy and are home to many chain restaurants.

Seersucker, Blue Point Coastal, Bice Restaurante and Oceanaire are solid restaurants with seafood/vegetarian options.

Happy Hours. .what's new and exciting?

The Oyster Bar at the Fish Market is terrific, but it's very difficult to get a seat. The Oyster Bar seems to have a cast of regulars who monopolize them. However, you can sit in the gegular bar and order from the menu, but it's just not same.

San Diego breweries among best in the world....

FWIW, IPA is San Diego's best know style, and if you want very drinkable IPAs, I highly recommend the trip to Alpine Brewery.

Can you buy SD microbrews in the supermarket?

The local BevMos carry a wide selection of local San Diego beers. The exception is Alpine Brewery whose beers are difficult to find outside the brewery.

I also enjoy Saffron for good take-out. Stick to their whole Thai grilled chicken combo, and it's a good deal ($16.00).

One Beer dinner

Stone Brewery in Escondido wins for the ambiance. Otherwise, with SD microbreweries the food is, well, expected. Trust me, you already know the menu before you step foot in any of them.

Since the food is an afterthought, I'd go for the beer. Ballast Point is terrific, and I'd definitely recommend the drive to Alpine Brewery. Heck you could spend the day visiting breweries off 76.

Also as you've already learned, all local gastro pubs carry a terrific selection of SD Beers -- it's a source of local pride. Hence the Tap Room in the heart of Pacific Beach might be the best option as you can take a cab.
