Outsourcing turkey cooking to Chinatown

There is a meat market that sells roast meats on Catherine Street between East Broadway and Henry Street that charges you by the pound of your bird. I've done this once before and it came out dry. Never again. No taste compares to the labor of love that goes in my home cooked turkey thats been hand basted for hours.

Women and Bourdain

You should also take into account that he visits parts of the world where woman aren't allowed the same rights as men. Sometimes when we do see them, it requires an introduction through a male guest host. Most of the time she will be doing the cooking.

Asian recipes without coconut?

Summer rolls can be eaten year round.

You can use any grilled meats as a substitute for shrimp. Avocado and firm tofu is a good substitute for meat.

Does 24-hour (or close to it) Chinese delivery exist in NYC?

I don't even think you can get congee delivered at that hour, much less lo mein and wonton soup. How about keeping some frozen dumplings and wontons close at hand for those mornings? It takes water to boil as fast as it is to wait for delivery?

Favorite Xiao Long Bao ( soup dumplings) in Queens?

I went last friday and our buns had the golden yellow dot on top to differentiate it from the plain pork buns. Perhaps it was a different chef that made our buns, but that day it was definitely thick in comparison to Nan Xiang.

Favorite Xiao Long Bao ( soup dumplings) in Queens?

I find the skin at Mekong thick and the crab flavor lacking. The filling was all pork with a bit of yellow-orange food coloring on the center of the bun. If one had to travel far with these soup buns, I would think these would survive the trip without breakage. In a pinch, these would do if I was craving for soup buns without the headache of parking in Flushing.

The best compliment you've received

One day out of the blue, my very hard to impress dad asked "can you make those bread again tomorrow?". This was coming from someone who hates it when anyone is using HIS kitchen and the harshest food critic I know. I haven't made them in a while, but just thinking about it now makes me want to make them in tribute for him.

So what's the average Chowhound's age?? (Part 2)

Do you pick out the "good pieces"?

Guilty of it last night, and why not? I bought the steak, marinated it, cooked it, sliced it (while self noting the best pieces), and washed the dishes. But those pieces made every effort worthwhile and everybody enjoyed the dinner. Win win.

chinese for 12-15 people

If your in Flushing, I happen to like Canton Gourmet.

I'm not sure how well the elder in your party handles spice, but thats something to take into consideration when picking a cuisine.

Least favorite cheeses?

I find shelf stable cheese that does not require refrigeration a disgusting idea. I've yet to try it. I usually see it come out in full force during the holidays in the gift baskets with salami where it sits out in room temperature for weeks.

Chinatown HELPFUL TERMS OF FOOD (english/pinyin/chinese)

I truly mean no offense. I'm just trying to say the slightest change of tone can change the meaning entirely. In English, you can say "beef' in 7 different accents and everyone will understand what your trying to say.

Chinatown HELPFUL TERMS OF FOOD (english/pinyin/chinese)

Without the correct tones, it's easier if the person just say it in english. It annoys me when when people try to talk to me in chinese straight off the paper and expects me to guess what they're trying to say.

What is the worst wedding reception dinner you've ever had?

A friend of mine was invited to a wedding hosted at the Cheesecake Factory. No one thought it could get any worst until the bill came and everyone had to pay for themselves.
