Recommendations for Jackson Heights, please.

For the best food from Tibet, try Phayul...outstanding and a fun place to take visitors. And....the very new Kitchen 79 has an interesting Thai menu--the food bursts with flavors not found in other local Thai places. If you're adventurous, go to Casa del Chef in nearby Woodside where a chef from Ecuador is bringing creativity to a farm to table menu.

Casa Del Chef: Blue Hill alum in Woodside

Portions were fine. On par with far more expensive NYC spots. The bill was heavily discounted during soft opening period. We left a generous tip. FYI..we did not order from the menu..We asked the chef to assemble a tasting menu and surprise us. He enjoyed this challenge. Trying to get more people to try this restaurant..I wish them the very best.

Casa Del Chef: Blue Hill alum in Woodside

Dined here last night with two friends. Casa Del Chef is by far the most ambitious restaurant to open in the Woodside/Jackson Heights area in many years. Chef prepared a special tasting menu for the table that included two amuse bouches (an excellent mushroom soup capped with a cool parmesan foam); grilled shrimp and a scallop dish followed--both dishes fresh and flavorful; main course featured perfectly cooked baby lamb chops. To accommodate a vegetarian at the table, chef created a beautiful plate featuring portobello mushrooms and assorted veggies. The highlight of the meal was a humble Ecuadorian dessert that featured fresh peaches and pineapple fermented in a white wine and apple sauce. Memorable. Because this is a "soft opening", the restaurant is still trying to gain solid is not as refined as it should be (a tendency toward over salting and underseasoning). While the service is gentle and kind, expect a long wait between courses. One hopes that Casa Del Chef will continue to improve and ultimately become the truly innovative, star worthy restaurant that the chef and his intrepid team envision.

Try Stella at Macy's...Great ambiance and very good, if uninspired, food. Or you can try NoMad, a few minutes away.

Easter Late Lunch/Dinner

Driving to Montreal from NYC for Easter Weekend. Looking for suggestions for a terrific spot for a late lunch or early dinner on Easter Sunday. Prefer French or Modern Canadian cuisine. Price is not an issue. Also looking for recommendations for bistros in Old Montreal.

Paulaner Brauhaus

I have walked by several times and have never seen more than a handful of occupied tables. No one, as yet, seems to be marketing this place. Beer prices are quite high for the typical NYU student and pretzels cost $7 at dinner...they should be gratis with the entrees.

Paulaner Brauhaus

On Christmas Eve, I took some out of town guests to the recently opened Paulaner Brauhaus on the Bowery (hoping for a festive evening of beer and German Food). First the good news: Decent and authentic German Food has returned to Manhattan. Bratwurst, Sauerbraten, Spatzel, Wienerschnitzel were far above what passes for German Food in Manhattan today. But, this place was lacking any sense of a German beer hall--without music, customers or beer carriers performing balancing acts through the spacious aisles. Sadly, Paulaner has zero Gemutlichkeit--the one ingredient that could make this place a major success.

A very over priced (and over rated) red sauce joint. Food is very good, but so are many, many other NYC spots at about half the price.

RedFarm UWS

Had lunch there today. Beautiful design and much more comfortable than the downtown location. Great flavors and lots of whimsy on the plates. The mushroom spring rolls resembled those terrifying trees in the Wizard of Oz; crab and duck dumplings (with pink eyes), looked like exotic sting rays and a tea smoked chicken could have passed for Peking Duck. The restaurant was full, service was friendly and efficient, and Ed was making the rounds (beaming). At last, a destination restaurant on the UWS.

Lively place for drink and good food near Penn Sta

Stella at Macy's is a terrific option, with sublime food and a great view of the Empire State Building. This is certainly the best restaurant in any NYC retail establishment.

Current Best-of-everything in or Near Jackson Heights.

Ayada serves world class Thai food. Uncle Peter's is the best restaurant in Jackson Heights. Alchemy is gaining traction as a major player in barbeque-land. And for dessert, Cannelle's pastries are flawless. Unfortunately, I have never found a great Indian restaurant here.

Stella 34

Went last Thursday for dinner. The room is beautiful--pulsating with NYC energy. Pizzas and pastas feature creative ingredient combinations; service is friendly, and the gelato is the best I've tasted in NYC. Macy's has opened a fashionable and stunning restaurant with terrific food. By far, NYC's best in-store dining.

Kappo. An exceptional culinary adventure.

Dined last evening at Kappo, the latest exclusive (8 diners only) culinary laboratory in the David Chang empire. Prior to this dinner, guests received personal phone calls from the ebullient Chef Paul Carmichael to determine food preferences/allergies and to learn about participants' favorite liquors/cocktails. Kappo is a very comfortable sectioned off portion of the bar in Ma Peche where all the food (for a nearly three-hour repast) is prepared by the Chef and his capable team. The evening begins with personalized cocktails mixed by spirits guru Caitlin and served with excellent fried chicken skins and salted seaweed chips. After a dramatic life ending ceremony for two noble lobsters, the Chef and team prepare a parade of exotic, flavorful, and "quirky" dishes, featuring lots of seafood including John Dory, Conch, Uni, a succulent salt-encrusted bass and those lucky lobsters. A bread course (baked on the spot) showcases loaves of Challah drenched in duck fat and salt. Congee is served with egg yolk and dotted with seafood. Guests are instructed in the art of mofongo making, and are given wooden pilons and mashers to turn the ingredients (plantains, garlic, etc.) into this staple of Puerto Rican cuisine. Somewhere during this food parade, a dish of scrambled eggs and barbequed pigtails made a tasty guest appearance. Dessert included an apple sorbet paired with an ethereal peanut butter mousse. There was also some superb molasses candy. The wine/drink pairing (a $65 supplement) is creative, generous and is in perfect sync with the food. From a rare cider, to an esoteric white wine(Prie Blanc) from Northwestern Italy, to a late-meal pina colada and a sparkling burgundy, the libations were exceptional. Overall, Kappo provides a satisfying (though at times challenging) culinary adventure. Chef Carmichael and team are onto something here. Ahead lies greatness.

Spaghetti Carbonara

Indeed, authentic carbonara does not include cream. Otto, a bit less pricey than Lupa, has excellent carbonara.

Mr Bruno's in East Elmhurst /Jackson Heights

Tried Bruno's yesterday. A very nice place to sit and enjoy a slice or two...comfortable tables and booths. Counter service was not the friendliest or the most efficient. And the pizza, though good, is not much different than other places in the neighborhood. Gianni's on Northern is a better bet.

Does anyone know any cool restaurants for teenagers in NYC?

Though the food is good, Otto is not cool.. For the "cool" factor, Stanton Street Social tops the list. Also Hecho en Dumbo in the Bowery and Schiller's. With careful selection, you should be able to meet your budget at any of these places. Red Farm would also be on the cool list.
