Happy New Year Everyone
A Bellingham steal: Happy Hour at Anthony's Seafood- 7 days a week
prices have gone up. but still a fine, if not great deal. Oyster shooters and bbq'd on the half shell are up to 75cents each. sliders and swimmers are now 2 or $2.5. Huge order of fried calamari is still $5 as is the steamers.
??? what is the current best Korean ayce BBQ in Los Angeles
Thank you. I know that some will not put the word best near ayce, but for the basis of this discussion, you can assume we know that.
Thank you.
a brief haiku about BBQ
Cry? Bludso's makes me drool. Perhaps it is your eyes that are drooling?
A Bellingham steal: Happy Hour at Anthony's Seafood- 7 days a week
no, i do not even live in Bellingham . spend summers in Birch Bay.
Chinatown.. need new place
Years ago we were regulars at Fortune, for the last few years we have been regulars at Mayflower. We used to love the hand scribbled specials' signs all over the walls. But ever since they took over the old Monkee spot we have been getting less and less impressed to the point we want a new hole in the wall in Chinatown.
We are familiar with Empress, ABC, CBS and Yangchow. You need not mention them unless something has changed in the last few years.
A friend mentioned JR Bistro in the old Fortune spot. Any thoughts..
Thank you all and happy holidaze!
A Bellingham steal: Happy Hour at Anthony's Seafood- 7 days a week
Had a craving for oysters the other day. We found out the hard way that Granville Island in BC did not have any worthwhile.
Came back to Brich Bay , and the craving would not go away. Having already trekked quite a bit that day, we were not up to the full drive to the Oyster Bar on Chuckanut. I thought of Anthonys down in Bellingham Harbor. I called and yes they did have 4 different kinds of oysters on the half shell that day, and, they added we have 50 cent oyster shooters during happy hours (3-6:30).
Well , an itch is an itch, and we drove down. We we did have an excellent sampler of fresh oysters on the half shell, albeit , an expensive taste at 8 (2 of each) for $16.95. They were delicious and nicely chilled. But that is not what I am taking the time to write about.
The FIFTY CENT oyster shooters were fabulous. They said they were fresh from Taylor's oyster farm. Their were four of us and I think we each had 7 or 8 oyster shooters. Each plump little devil in its own shot glass with a just right cocktail sauce.
Now we could not help ourselves, and we perused the rest of the happy hour menu. At $5 each, the fried calamari and steamed clams were the same size order as the regular menu only at half the price. They were both scrumptious Also 50cents each were a nice peel and eat prawn (21-25 size) and an okay bay shrimp shooter (with shrimp, celery and cocktail sauce).
We also saw beef sliders , 3 for $5 and Salmon ''swimmers'' at the same price. We tried the later (called swimmers instead of sliders, but the same priniciple). My wife wants to go back for more of those guys.
Add to this a nice list of $3 artisan beers on draft and this has to be one of the best places to frequent in the Bellingham area. .
Best Fish and Chips?
John O'Groats has mentioned above , does in fact have great fish and chips. The owner is the son of the family of the legendary Bit of Scotland. which had the best fish and chips in our fair town.
Current ridiculously cheap specials in San Gabriel Valley asian food.. you got any
Capitol Seafood (in center at ne corner Garvey and Atlantic)
Whole lobster $5.99 , one for every four people at table
Natural Casing Hot Dogs at Grocery Store?
Only thing I buy at Gelsons: their private label natural casing dogs. I like them better than Boars Head or the Ralph's private label that seems to be in and out of stock.
quick question: Dim Sum today in the next 2 hours???
near the 10 and LaCienega.. will go East.. I called Elite and Capitol and they both serve until 3pm but I do not know about getting there at 1-1:30.. thanks for quick reply
quick question: Dim Sum today in the next 2 hours???
any suggestions. Chinatown to Monterey Park.?
yikes, really edible Indian food in Ferndale
Been spending summers in Birch Bay, wa. Generally, the food in northern washington is nothing to write about.
But yesterday, we tried Curry House (2024 main st) in Ferndale. Not only were our two curries really good, the service was great and the owner really friendly. The naan even game with ghee on them.
About one mile west of I-5, this is a worthwhile ethnic food stop , the only one I know in the area.
Bludso's vs BigMistah BBQ update
Well we have been to both a couple of times in the last month. At all BBQ places , I always order with the sauce on the side.
Reflections, BigMistah's brisket is the bomb but so is Bludso's. I like the thicker slices that BigMista does, but that is about it. At both places I order my brisket from the "wet" side. At both places , I had no need to add sauce, the brisket was great.
BBQ sauce: no contest for me. Bludso's is great. BigMista's totally misses for me. Even my son who likes spicier stuff threw it out.
Slabs of Ribs: Perhaps I got BigMista on two bad days (both times in Watts), but his spareribs were not very appetizing both times. Surprisingly they had no smokey crust. Bludso's ribs on the other hand were much tastier and had a very charred appearance, though not as crusty as I like. Actually , I prefer the rib tips at Bludso's (ties for my best with Phillip's). I do not think I will find out if the 3rd time is the charm at BigMista for ribs. Additionally, on the weekends, Bludso's does killer angus beef ribs.
Both serve great Banana Pudding when they have it. (weekends at Bludso's).
The only place in LA that I have gotten brisket that could compare would be Mom's on Imperial Highway (not the Mom's in the valley, which has passable Q too).
For pork ribs, I would still put Phillip's most any day and R&R (on their good days) a notch, and a small one at that, above Bludso's. BigMista's spareribs would not be on any best of LA for me.
Bludso's also has top notch pulled pork and surprisingly decent chicken (which is difficult to do in a pit bbq). I am not a hot link fan, but my son gives a thumbs up to all three types at Bludso's.
I rarely eat sides with my Q. The only side in LA that I would not miss are the beans at J&R.
Bellingham: need fabulous Pies.
Very ill friend is craving great pies. We know about Grace. Any other suggestions?
Best fish and chips in Bellingham?
two word answer: SHRIMP SHACK
no longer has the charm of the original location (with attached fish market , whole structure on a off kilter foundation). But they still make great F&C , their other fried stuff aint too shabby either. And do not forget the whiskey crab soup.
bludso's bbq in compton
Bigmista: anyone who knows about the membrane on spareribs, should know enough to never ever order takeout (or any bbq) with the sauce on the product. by the time you get home, that is all you will taste.
IMHO, ribs should be eaten with only a modicum of sauce. The sauce should not be given the opportunity to overpower the Q. I have been to Bludso's (coming from WLA) six times in the last four weeks. They are currently first on my list for the LA area for overall meats. Brisket they are my #1, ties for first for rib tips (with Phillips).
I keep going down for weekday lunches, so I have yet to try their beef ribs or banana pudding.
And what has been great , it that they have been consistent in their quality.
Bludso's Burnt Ends
One more place in town that has burnt ends on the menu is Spring Street Smokehouse in downtown LA.
They can range from sublime and moist to disappointing and almost jerky-dry
As per anywhere with BBQ, ask for sauce on the side. Not only to avoid drowning your meat in sauce but to avoid being served old meat.
Frozen Custard on Third
Well we gave Loco a try today. tasty, but not frozen custard. Rather it is custard flavored soft serve like the independent Foster's Freeze type mom and pop's used to sell. If in the neighborhood would get again, but not really frozen custard.
Stevens Steak House
Stevens is a step back in time. The prime rib is supposedly sourced at the same place that Lawry's gets theirs. In any case, it is always top notch. Their large cut is massive, about two pounds including the bone. Comes with sides too.
I rarely have anything else there, but on two occassions i remember having liver and onions for lunch (well prepared) and halibut (suprisingly good) on another evening.
Go for the prime rib!!!!! For the old timers, it reminds me of Tractons and the Buggywhip, but at a little more reasonable price.
spending week of July 4 in Brich Bay??
Any reasonable dining suggestions appreciated. Going across the border is getting dicey as I have been told that the waiting times can get pretty serious.
So any good ideas from the border south to say Bellingham or east to Lynden???
thank you
In for final four.. BBQ roadtrip..anyone open Sun?
We have a day to go looking for the ''smoke''. Anyone between San Antonio and Austin open on Sunday. Anyone that is with 'killer' barbecue.
Thank you
Flying into Austin, going to SanAntonio
We will have one day on the way in and one day on the way out while driving to and from San Antonio.
Any suggestions for bbq or unique restaurants in the area. Will travel up to 30 miles or so out of our way for the extra ordinary. (already planning on hitting Lockhart).
We will have a car while in San Antonio, so we are not limited to where we are staying while there. We will have access to the trolley system too.
We really dont give a damn about or care to pay for atmosphere, we want 5 star food.
On Sunday, we do not have plans and would not mind traveling any direction for something exceptional. (say up to 50 miles).
Thank you all

Tokyo Ice: pretty good ayce Sushi
Tokyo Ice
(818) 906-8913
16161 Ventura Blvd, Encino
Had to drop off some papers with my lawyer at 16133 ventura blvd. I got lucky and found a meter on the boulevard. Well what should I see, a banner proclaiming "all you can eat sushi"
Of course it was lunch time and I had to try it.
Quiet little place, but the staff seemed really really friendly. Nigiri selection was not the largest, but everything that we did have was quite good. Seared albacore, hamachi, surf clam, scallops, octopus all seemed fresh. Nice touch with the albacore as they put both those little scallions and fried onion bits on the pieces.
We tried some hand rolls. Langonistos, calamari, and tempura shrimp. Excellent hand rolls if that is the way you swing. Tried the BSC and it was good if rather oversized.
Appetizers included, we had miso soup, salad and enaname.
Lunch was $19.99 and dinner 5 bucks more. Dinner included one order each of uni, raw shrimp, blue crab roll, spider roll and a few others i dont remember right now.
For AYCE fans, Tokyo Ice should be on your short list to try.
New Champion in AYCE sushi: Fuzen
chowhounds or chowsnobs. i am proudly the former. i look for good food at fair prices. i could give a foie gras about ambience. that said, FUZEN is excellent value for the $$$ spent. I have been three times. All three times I orders at least three orders each of albacore, yellowtail, and surf clams (largest I had seen). I prefer ponzu with most of my sushi so I always ask for a separate bowl of it.. no problemo. Since I have always found Rollls to usually be too much of one thing at one time, I will try to order only the rolls that can be made as a hand roll. On that account they did well. Sweet shrimp and uni are not to be expected on AYCE, if they are there great, but their unavailability is not enough reason for me to verbally dump on a place.Midori (which we also love) is a $10 gas trip away from us and theyhave a limit of one for uni and sweet shrimp. we dont order salmon at AYCE, because it has to be farm raised and my brother-in-law catches the real thing in Alaska. In my three trips, I have typically had about 15 orders of nigiri and 3-4 handrolls. Plus we split one of the rolls that are baked with sauces. (I like the micro lobster ones). AND I HAVE FELT GREAT ABOUT THE MEAL AND THE PRICE I PAID FOR IT.
Any real frozen custard in town?
Tarty yogurt is the trendy choice now, but is there any place in town to get genuine mid-west style frozen custard. Do not confuse this with the ice milk that Fosters and DQ put out there.
New Champion in AYCE sushi: Fuzen
The AYCE includes all sushi on the menu (by the piece or rolls) plus Miso soup and an assorted plate of fried tempura.
