Pork BBQ in Austin

I always forget about the BBQ place at Whole Foods. I'll make a note to grab some the next time I'm in there.

Pork BBQ in Austin

I'm a fan of the Carolina style also. That's whats so intriguing about Curley's Perfect Pig. However, I have the worst luck catching food carts open and this one is not really close to my house.

Lately, I've been getting my pork with vinegar sauce fix from Coopers. Their big chop and sauce is a nice combination. I'm not a huge fan of their brisket, but I'll drive out that way for the chop and the beans.

Pork BBQ in Austin

Here's a list of a few places that I can think of right now. I grew up in Georgia and every so often get a craving for some pulled pork. All of these are serviceable but none as good as I remember from home.

1) Lambert's: 'fancy' bbq downtown. I generally like everything here except the bbq. I really like the half price bar menu for happy hour. http://www.lambertsaustin.com/

2) Mann's smokehouse - 183 and Ohlen: Not bad and they even have brunswick stew. http://www.mannsbbq.com/

3) Busters BBQ in Lakeway: I've only made it here once and it was ok. http://www.busterslakeway.com/

4) Johnny T's Round Rock BBQ - on 620 near Round Rock high school: It's been a while since I've been but is was probably the best that I've had in town.

5) Franklin - as mentioned already. Pretty good pulled pork but really long lines.

6) Dickey's - a chain and not very good the day I tried it.

7) Curleys Perfect Pig - a food truck downtown. I haven't been yet but looks like it has potential. https://www.facebook.com/CurlysPerfectPig

Lunch in Austin

Also, JMueller is right across the street if you want some BBQ and Elizabeth Street Cafe (upscale Vietnamese) "shares" the parking lot with Gourdough's and the others mentioned.

So you could have banh mi, a lobster roll, a carnitas taco, a beef short rib, and a doughnut with bacon and maple syrup icing.

In The Buns

I think the deli next door is closed temporarily. They were doing some construction it seems and when I went by last they had the windows covered. Not sure if they've opened back or not. I would suggest calling if you going just for that.

Final plans

Looks like you have most of the top spots in town. The only new place missing is Lenoir. I haven't had a chance to try it yet but I've linked a review of one of the former newspaper food critics.
I have no idea which one to replace but I thought I'd mention it.

"Tiger" or "Rock" Shrimp in Austin???

Lamberts has something similar on their app menu. Looks like they are half price during happy hour so might be worth a shot.

The Spiciest Mexican Dish in Austin

2nd the Diablo oysters at Lucy's. Hottest thing I've tried in a long time.

New Pollos al Carbon place in NW Austin

Yeah. It came with the creamy green sauce, corn tortillas, rice, beans, grilled onions, and regular salsa.

New Pollos al Carbon place in NW Austin

It has a few tables inside and is connected to Taqueria Zacatlan on the inside as well. I think it would be good for lunch place but I didn't check the hours to see when they open.

New Pollos al Carbon place in NW Austin

There's a new pollos al carbon place on Anderson Mill Road in the same shopping center as Taqueria Zacatlan (same space even). I'm not sure of the name as it was unclear, but they have a large banner outside advertising the chicken.

I picked up a whole chicken the other night and it was very good. Came with usual sides. Maybe not as much seasoning on the outside as El Regio, but very tasty. I got some extra queso so I'm not completely sure on the price, but it was somewhere around $15 for the whole chicken.

Vegetarian friend coming to town

Thanks for a good laugh this morning.

Fruitcake Lover!

My parents really like the fruit cake from Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana (and Waco I think ). It's not quite Austin but pretty close by.

Smoked Ham for Christmas (where near Austin should I look)

We got one from Blacks in Lockhart a couple years ago. It was tasty. Their website now has honey glazed hams so I don't know if they still have them without the glaze.

Cajun in Austin?

Stuffed's online menu says the bread is 'straight from Gambino's in New Orleans'. I tried a Shrimp Po'boy a few weeks ago and it was very good but I have no idea how authentic it was.

Bar to Watch Football in Austin?

There are a few sports bars downtown. Here's a short list:

Lavaca Street Bar: In the warehouse district. Think the GT-VT alums are there for the college game this Thursday.

3rd Base: West 6th next to Mopac. You'd need a car or take a cab to get there.

The Tavern - near 12th and Lamar

Champions - within walking distance of the convention center on 4th street

The Upper Decks - just south of the river between Congress and S 1st.

I've been to 3rd Base the most of the above but they all should be good to catch the game.

Sausage (bbq) question?

My parents are big fans of the regular sausage at Black's in Lockhart and City Market in Luling. While those aren't too far away, does anyone know of a place with a very similar style closer to Austin? Apologize in advance if this is a dumb question, but I always focus on brisket and never usually try the sausage.

Hard Hat Report Vol 8

There's a sign up for Cover 2 at the old Hooters location on 183 near Lake Creek. Looks to be a more casual version of Cover 3.

Visiting from San Francisco -- Need some suggestions!

For late Wednesday night, you might look at Parkside and Justine's. Parkside is open till 12:30 or so and Justine's till 2am.

BBQ Beef Ribs

2nd for Iron Works. I've seen them at Texas Rib Kings and they're on the menu at Ruby's but I haven't tried them at either place.

solo dining/take out options near Lavaca and 6th downtown?

As others have mentioned, there are a ton of restaurants within reasonable walking distance. Although, as hot as it's been, it might be worth a few bucks just to cab it.

Here's a few suggestions:

1) Parkside - Their happy hour from 5-7 is a really good deal. Lots of tasty items from the bar menu are half price. ~$10 for the bar steak and fries. Their regular dinner menu is really good also but a little pricey.
http://www.parkside-austin.com

2) Lambert's - The bbq here is average but I've really enjoyed the non-bbq items I have tried. I really liked the achiote seared chickpeas. They have a good bar menu as well with some local beers on tap and a tasty cheeseburger.

3) Whole Foods at 6th and Lamar - if you haven't been you should check it out. It should be about a 4 or 5 block walk and has a ton of variety for take out(you can eat there as well). There's threads on here about things to get at whole foods so you might check them out for some good ideas.

Bagels.

Have you checked Wholly Bagel? I thought I've seen Egg bagel's there but I haven't actually bought one so I'm not sure.

Anyone tried Hank's Garage?

I saw the post on Eater about a new Belgian beer bar downtown named Hank's Garage. A quick check of the menu and I see 'duck fat frites' and Poutine. I'm very intrigued but with a new little one in the house, my opportunities for eating out these days are very rare. I was wondering if any hounds had tried it yet and if it's worth getting a sitter.

My favorite things from Central Market

You might check with Stuffed Cajun Market. I seem to recall seeing some Community stuff there but I'm not sure about the tea bags. It's way northwest on 620 so i'd call before I drove up there.

Hello Northerners! I guess Northwest to be specific.....

Here's a few places to add to your list:

1) Sunflower - Vietnamese place near Ohlen and 183.

2) Teji's - Indian place near Round Rock high school on 620. Part store and part restaurant. The owner is a real nice guy and I think the food is very reasonable and tasty.

3) The Noble Pig - sandwiches shop near 620 and Anderson Mill road. I'm fond of the duck pastrami.

4) Shandeez Grill - Persian restaurant on Anderson Mill between 183 and parmer. I have only been once but thought it was good enough to try again.

Austin Area/Centex Beer

I'm a fan of Devil's Backbone as well and I'm hoping they bottle it again this year. I tend to drink Fireman's 4 and Live Oak Hefe when it's hot out. Recently, I've been enjoying Jester Kings beer. I've had their Commercial Suicide(on tap at the Draught House) and the Black Metal Imperial Stout(bottle at Opals).

BBQ Crawl 2011

The Coopers in New Braunfels would be a much shorter drive from Luling (only about 35 miles or so). I've haven't tried that location though so I don't know if it's as good as Llano.

Exploring Maudie's Menu

Nice post. I think your ranking lines up pretty well with my experience. My office's lunch crew insists on going there every so often and I've learned to stick with the fajitas or the migas. I like that they give you a lot peppers with the fajitas. The migas are basic but the chorizo and queso give them a nice flavor.

Great BBQ with microbrew

I'll add Lambert's to the list. It's downtown in a cool building but the que is just average. They have a couple of Live Oak's and a Real Ale on tap with usually an interesting special. Here's there website:

SEAFOOD IN AUSTIN??

As mentioned above, I think Perla's and Parkside are good choices for oysters. Pricey, but good. I think Perla's is the most like a New England seafood place in town. In addition, if you're near the Northwest area, you might try Pacific Star. More of an inexpensive, hole in the wall type place.
