Best Mandarin restaurant in Chinatown???

Hi I realize this is a super outdated post but was revisiting it and wanted to respond...Yes there was a specific spot that my family loved back in the Midwest called Yu's Mandarin (Schaumburg) soooo was looking for something similar. Since this post I have learned a lot more about Chinese cuisine and definitely a lot more to learn. Looking forward to learning/eating :)

Bestia is excellent.

Ehh...I was super hyped on this spot and thought I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE it, but I wasn't wow'd. Granted, I may have chose the wrong things and also the beef heart tartare was out for the night hehe...

Dishes:
- House-made salumi = was aiiiiiiiight...not a fan of headcheese which was the bulk of the cured meats.
- Chicken gizzards = my uncle's choice and I actually didn't mind them but they were a bit overcooked/crispy
- Bone marrow w/ gnoccehtti = Loved. Perfectly roasted marrow and enjoyed the green pebbly pasta.
- Nettles pasta = was okay, nothing extreme to write about...tasty but wasn't wowed.
- Calamari & octopus = boring and overcooked. Lacked flavor but I ate it because it was light.

Was fairly full for a 6:30pm res on a Tuesday night and enjoyed my leisurely dinner with my uncle who was in town!

Will go back to try other recommended dishes, but if I want Italian in the DTLA area I'll be at Drago Centro.

ISO dinner spot condusive for a fun catch-up meal

I'm meeting up with a friend and his girlfriend, whom I haven't seen in like 5 years, while in town for business. Since this is a special occasion, I want to be able to chat and have a great time, with 2 hour or so leisurely dining abilities. I know nothing of NYC so I'd appreciate some insight as this outing calls for a fun and yummy spot! Along the lines of places to compare in LA (from there): Church & State, Cleo, Red Medicine, Lukshon, or Hatfield's-esq but more on the $$$ AKA delish food and drink, lively, great ambiance and interesting tasteful decor/design but nothing stark and uber minimal or trendy/gimmicky. Want to be able to chat and have a great time, 2 hour or so leisurely dinging abilities. Open to lL cusines but as I live in Koreatown of LA, I'm cool on any Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, or Mexican.

Thanks in advance, looking forward to your suggestions!

New spot reccs for cilent dinners next week!

Hi all,

It's that time of year again that I have to travel to Las Vegas for work!

I'm looking for 2 restaurants to entertain my fashion clients while in town for PROJECT, in the same vibe of SW or SAGE. I'm coming from Los Angeles so I'd prefer to stay away from spots that I could get here.

Thanks in advance and looking forward to hearing about any noteworthy places to dine.

Best,
Deidre

UMAMIcatessen - Thoughts?!

Surprised this thread hasn't been started yet!

Checked it out last night after work! Longish wait, but to be expected for an anticipated spot. The cocktails are the bar were delish and service was attentive. We had the Black Jack (really yum and could be dangerous as it was strong but sweet!), the pig whiskey thing (was aiiight) and the Urban Trader (could have been mixed better of all ingrediants).

Finally after 30 min or so, we were seated. Waitstaff was lovely and menu was familiar on the Umami Burger section (which I was thinking there'd be something different). It's funny to me that there is a "kosher" Jewish Deli section and then a pork-centric menu! All 3 food menus offered a variety of selections without being too overwhelming. I do however wish there was a lil bit more veggie options, as it was very meat and startch/fried/carb heavy with only a few salads.

We ordered the crispy pig ears (good but nothing amazing), mini potatos knishes (yummy morsels but again, nothing that blew my mind), pastrami burger (yum--want to try just the pastrami sammich next), manly burger, and the tempura onion rings amongst 3 people. Dessert was the beignets and they were not good (pout).

Would I go back? YES! Sure. Would I go out of my way for it? Naaaaaaa.

Fun/weird / hole-in-the wall / hidden gem spots for brunch or lunch???

Thanks all for your suggestions!

Langer's is always on the menu :) KTCN105 is me and my friends spot...may be too trendy/artsy for her. Casablanca ew. Nickel Diner & Uncle Johns been there (close to my work!). Inn of Seventh Ray closed during winter months :/

Nick's Cafe, Papa Cristos (close to my house and I want to check out their market), Pann's are in the running. Madame Chou Chou looks superb for my mother/daughter brunch with my girlfriends :) Thank you all~

Fun/weird / hole-in-the wall / hidden gem spots for brunch or lunch???

My mother is coming into town, and she loves a great culinary experience with "extra charm". One of our spots was Clifton's, but that's obviously on hiatus. *pout*

Any recommendations for a quirky, delish hole in the wall spots within the LA area??? I'm at a loss and I want to do something fun with her. I can only think of PDC, Taylor's Steakhouse or Olympic House of Breakfast...!

Where to splurg for a dinner on the Strip

I had a lovely experience at SAGE a few days ago. Casual chic with a nice atmosphere. You can converse which is lovely--as some Vegas restaurants are loud and obnoxious. The portions are generous for the price, and the ingredients were incredible. I opted to do the 4 course tasting menu, which was plentyyyy of food and only $80 (you can wine pair for an additional $40). I had the wagyu beef tartar (perfect consistency and temp but a tad bit bland to be honest), maine scallops w/ braised oxtail and broccolini (yummmX1000), 48 hour beef belly (I'm not a hugeeeee beef belly fan but whatever hehe), and some chocolate amazing desert. Others had the fluke, skirtsteak and the octopus as an app which could have easily been a small main! The service was attentive without being annoying, and knowledgeable.

A few cocktails + a nice bottle of wine and that's def $200 per person. I don't recommend the ginger cocktail though (forget the name hehe) and they gave us an after-dinner "chocolate soup" thing which was horrible and tasted heavily like chai (Chef McClain, if you're reading this stop! lol) Cheers!

I do not keep Kosher, so that isn't a huge factor, but I appreciate the observation and accommodation to the Jewish dietary restrictions!

Thank you both for your input ~ I am going to check out your suggestions and will report back! Red Light, Fratelli Milano, Sam's Deli, Etzel Itzik Deli, Hakkasan sound amazing!!!

The Orso space on 3rd st.

Okay--since no one replied I will give you an update.

I went yesterday evening. Very low key for a Friday evening, but still patronized. Interesting crowd as well (super cheesy people + old folk).

Ordered: Octopus carpaccio (which was served with cubed potatoes and olives) ~ Delish, light, and interesting mix of flavors without being "out there". Burrata w/ cherry tomatoes and olive oil. I'm a burrata connoisseur, and it was fairly good, decent texture and temp. Again, light (which was what I was going for!). I didn't like the bread they served at all (tasted like pita). We decided to split a main, which was the Branzino w/ seasonal veggies (which happened to be their brussels sprouts). Fish was served with head and tail and was supposed to be "de-boned" but had a few stragglers in it. We paired it with their Mezzelune Al Tartufo (half moon shaped pasta with black truffle cream) and the flavor was SUPERB and went amazing with the fish (which was pretty zzzz but I didn't mind because of the pairing and it was cooked well). We ended the eve with something sweet--which was their "chocolate salami" w/ vanilla gelato. Sounds weird, but was very good and great way to end the meal.

Service: Strange but attentive. I didn't understand why he didn't mention the specials at all until we ASKED about them. But no hiccups or negative vibes. Also, the dessert had nuts in it and he should have mentioned that when we ordered it--kind of an important component when describing a dish (what if we had a nut allergy!)

Atmosphere: One of the best patio's I've been to in LA. Charming, decent noise level and romantic.

All in all, decent spot to try but not like "OMGG!"

I wholeheartedly second that! Follow-up with a delish ice cream treat at Scoops on Heliotrope.

Okay folks, I’ve decided to take the plunge ... Korean food. Where to begin?

Soot Bull Jeep is great for authentic charcoal, but perhaps a great AYCE spot for you would be Road to Seoul. Then move to Parks when you want to spend some $$$. I hear Castle BBQ on Western is good too. My order-off-the-menu spot is Hodori. You can always go to Assi Market and pick up some takeaway food or make it at home.
