Esca, tonight - any thoughts?

My wife and I are headed to Esca tonight. We haven't been.

I think we are going to have the tasting menu w/ selected wines. Does anyone feel that the extra crudo supplement is essential?

Any other thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks so much.

Gramercy Tavern help - Tavern or Dining Room?

My wife and I received a Gramercy Tavern gift certificate just recently. Can anyone help us to understand the menus before we go? Online it looks like there is an 86$ dinner menu in the dining room - I assume there are two courses to choose from and then a desert - the menu online only shows the choice of two courses.

The tasting room is obviously a much more economical choice. We would be willing however to splurge on the dinner room - any thoughts?

Thank you so much for any help.

One night in New Haven - best restaurant?

Anyone have recommendations for a special, romantic restaurant that has great food? Not limited by cuisine or price range, want something to remember.

Thanks!

Tasting menu reccomendations?

My wife and I want to splurge this summer and do one tasting menu at a restaurant in the city, or just outside (ala Stone Hill) – anyone have any thoughts as to the most special experience? We are looking for a place w/in roughly less than $100/person w/o wine or $150/person with wine. We have no restrictions on our diets and are adventerous eaters. If you had one place to go within that price range, where would it be? Thanks in advance.

Momofuku Ssam - Terrific Dinner

Two of us went to Momofuku last night. I had been there before and had a great time. My companion's first. Much has been written here, everywhere really, about the place but dinner was just so utterly delicious I feel like I have to post a quick write-up.

We had -

2 orders of the pork buns. Unctuously delicious. Less hoisin sauce as I remember last time. Two meltingly salty slices of pork. Yum

Brussels sprouts w/ mint, scallion in a fish sauce vinaigrette. Crunchy, perfectly charred sprouts in that tangy, complex vinaigrette. Could drink the bowl.

Uni w/ whipped tofu and beet tapioca. This was my favorite of the evening. Uni was beautiful - tender, salty, fresh - such an interesting flavor and one I have only had the chance one other time to experience. Waiter recommended mixing each of the flavors in each bite but I found myself wanting to eat them separately they were so interesting.

Pickled veggies - the turnips, beets and mushrooms stand out.

Kimchi apples, jowl bacon, maple labne and arugula. Not the best dish but still flavorful, refreshing and fun. Wish the apples were cut more uniformly and had a bit more of a kimchi kick.

Plate of Broadbent's country ham. Loved the blackeye mustard/gravy spread.

The flavors stayed with us all night and I find myself lusting to go back there right now. Maybe I'm just a sucker for Chang's palate. Whatever it is - loved it!

Visiting NYC from Chicago during Restaurant Week - Any Suggestions?

My friend and I (and the three tables around us) LOVED Dovetail's lunch.

What's the plan for restaurant week?

Posted this on its own but it dropped off quick - wanted to say that my lunch at Dovetail was exquisite as per a RW experience. Highly recommended. Great to see a restaurant take a lunch during RW so seriously.

Dovetail RW - terrific!

Absolutely delicious lunch today at Dovetail. And it wasn't just my table - on either side of me three different tables had nothing but raves about the food. The flavors all were bright, distinct and unified. Portions were just right. Having gone to RW meals and been given food that was half-assed at best from some of the best restaurants in NY - this was a refreshing change.

Amuse bouche of sweet potatoes topped with a carmalized foam infused w/ rosemary - savory, well balanced.

Corn bread - salty, moist, great.

Pork belly w/ coco beans - spot on.
Seafood salad w/ golden raisins on a salsa verde sauce was refreshing, citrusy. The shrimp, scallops and mussels were all perfectly cooked.

Hake w/ fennel, basil and nicoise olives was another hit. Fish had a perfect carmalized crust, moist and the sauce, the braised fennel - all of it was just delicious (am I repeating myself?)
Braised lamb shoulder = succulent. The preparation was different from the menu. It was topped w/ lightly dressed greens, on top of thinly sliced carrots and underneath was what tasted like a sunchoke puree? Whatever - soo good.

Deserts were good - nothing close to the apps and main.

Service was excellent, respectful and informed.

I don't usually post but this was one of those small but perfect meals that you want to share.

Enjoy!

Restaurant Week--where are you planning on going?

Just wanted to confirm the mediocrity of Mai House. Went earlier this week with a friend. Had the beef and the papaya salad, the chicken and the ribs, and finally the ganache and the sorbets. Utterly underwhelmed by all of it.

Frankies 457 lately?

Went for dinner last night. 45 minute wait, which was fine, had a drink at the bar next door. Meal was as utterly mediocre, if that.

We had the anitpasto (two cheeses, two meats, two veggies and olives- unremarkable), crimini and truffle oil crostini (delicious but who can screw up truffle oil) and a cannelini bean, parsley crostini (oddly sweet, not very good at all). For dinner my wife had the gnocchi with fresh riccota and marinara- chewy gnocchi, flavorless sauce, cheese was the only highlight of the dish. I had the pork braciola- again, flavorless sauce. Pork was ok, moist enough, but just so boring. I didn't even finish it- which never happens.

Cute place. Service was good, if not a bit harried, though it being Saturday night we didn't expect different.

Overall just a "eh" kind of meal. With so many places to choose from we haven't yet tried, I can't imagine ever going back. Oh well.

Next Iron Chef Episode 4

WORST EDITED FOOD SHOW EVER.

I just can't take it.

Personalities are great, chefs have been humble and fun to watch. AB is a jerk but he's still entertaining. Decent challenges, esp last night even if they ripped off Top Chef.

BUT the editing is miserable. No continuity in terms of watching a dish get put together. The first time we have any idea of what the dish is going to look like is the medium shot of it, framed, before the judges eat. And even the eating is over edited so we get no real sense of what the judges experience.

So much potential, and I'll continue to watch it, (sigh), but so poorly executed.

Tuna Entree in Brooklyn?

My sister's birthday is this weekend and she is craving some kind of grilled, seared, etc tuna steak. Not too pricey or exotic as the parents are paying and eating with.

Thanks!
