Me Want Carrot Cake

a carrot cake specialty company? exciting.

Me Want Carrot Cake

omg thank you for your reply dear kathryn. those two are very helpful threads. I am glad someone actually bothered with carrot cake.

Cake tasting starts tomorrow with the few places I have not been to and tried, which are, two little red hens, settepani, E.A.T, and soutine, all mentioned in previous threads.

Please keep all suggestion coming since this is not a comparison, it is a purely exhaustive search for carrot cakes baked with TLC, not mass produced and masquraded as baked goods. Tasting winner will be served at holiday festive party alongside with methycellulouse starfruit meringue conction and completely obliterate it, and all its hydrocoloidal cohorts.

I will go and taste anything anywhere that sells a honest product. And i rest my Carrot Cake Destiny upon the gastronomic prowess and discriminating palate of chowhounders.

Me Want Carrot Cake

I know, i know, of all the delicious and marvelous things in the world...... I just want Carrot Cake.

Ones with everything, raisins, pecans or walnuts, real carrots that taste like carrots, cream cheese frosting. Looking for cakes that are decadently rich not light and fluffy, not over spiced or over sugared(if one needed to be more specific, 30 to 35 brix is a liquid that i find perfectly sweet when it is a simple sucrose solution), does not feature some kind of unique or inventive ingredient, so no bacon, no candied grasshoppers, and definitely no methycellulouse starfruit meringue with star anise longaan fluid gel sphered center.

Under 50 dollars for a 6 inch one if at all possible but no amount too great if truly wonderful, and i will trek to anywhere that can be reached within 6 hours by cab, public transportation, bicycle, or walking.

Daniel Review - Very Long, Very Sad

Does anyone else see a food appreciation problem here or.... after foie gras, kamquat, brioche, chorizo, mustard, chonichon, most poeple probabaly wouldn't be able to taste something like peekytoe crab meat which is a much too subtle flavor anyways... not arguing for the restaurant here, but it does seem to be common sense.
And just a personal opinion, i think one should never consume a portion of food one intend to return to the kitchen upon discovering that it is unsuitable to ones individual preference... if I was the staff at some restaurant, and someone told me their steak was the wrong doness, and when the replacement came out, their party have already devoured the steak, i would feel very cheated and upset. just as you would if your food came out the wrong doness.

Kathryn i really love looking at your pictures on flickr, it really inspires those of us who doesnt have the time to go out and sit down for dinner as often to make an effort to do that. But alas, i dont work in the city, so i cannot go anywhere for lunch.

Best Deals in Town

BLTs, Meyers, Batalis, I moved to new york 1 n half ago. so anything that was happening recently, i have been to. I have not been to many of the old timers such as fleur de sel, telepan, etc. I really liked Gramercy tavern, and Craft. The sort of not overly labored, rustic but rich and decadent kind of food.

I know i can count on kathryn to chime in. thank you.

Clarification: 100 before tax and tips. So the 88 dollar prix fix at EMP count. Im looking for relatively new choices, and old favorite that may be forgotten. Have been to many of the formentioned chowhound favorites. Something slightly off the beaten path/different/quirky can be nice. and I am a big eater, so portion size matter :P

Cheese help please

On burrata, you can find it on saturday in citarella(the one in the lower east side) and in the garden of eden near union square on 5th for sure. The version from citarella is a bit different, the flavor is more sour in my opinion and the one from the garden of eden is like a giant compared to the one from citarella, the flavor is more mild and the inside is more dry(solid). the taste is more herbal with a slight bitterness to the finish. The garden of eden ones also says they are originated from Langa, which is suppose to be close to piedmont, But burrata is only suppose to come from Puglia? (pardon my poor geographical knowledge of italy and the PDO standards) The ones from Buon Italia in Chelsea are more creamy, taste more sweet, but these dont come in plastic with the asfedelo on it, Im not sure if these were made in house like some of the ones in Di palos. but these often run out, not very perdicatable at all. There is also a cheese called Stracciatella which is a fresh italian cheese as well which is similar to the rigatali(inside of the burrata) is sometimes sold at Buon italia. This is also sometimes filled into a sac of Mozz, i found it at Buon Italia without the casing just in a container. Not sure if this is always available. It was made from cows milk and the taste was complex and wonderful. Just as delicious as the rigatali of burrata if not more.

From NYC to Philli

the morimotos in nyc is kind of like the laughing stock of serious japanese gormets. they survive based on the good location(meat packing) and tourism. Is the one in Philly better? anyone has been to both?

From NYC to Philli

I noticed that BYOB policy in a lot of restaurants. It is certainly a interesting thing. Thanks for the clarification.

From NYC to Philli

Visiting from NYC to philli. Where should I eat? Enjoy fine dining French, southern italian Japanese, and Chinese places. Open to notable creative restaurants. NYC favorites are Jean Georges, Sushi Yasuda, Kuruma Zushi, Babbo, regional Chinese from queens. What represents the best of Philli? let the suggestions begin.

Benoit- go or no??

It seriously is just a bistro. Go without expectations you will be fine. Don't expect to be wowed or amazed or beddazzled because you will probabaly not be. I think a bistro is probabaly the french equivelent of a diner. If you are hungry and need to eat dinner, then its perfectly fine. It's absolutely no destinations by any means.

Been to Kouzan on 93rd and Amsterdam?

They serve their Sushi and Sashimi Special for two with a strobe light inbeded in the plate as deocoration. Enough said......

Queens Crossing "Mulan" Restaurant?

I didn't end up at Mulan on Saturday, just wasn't going to have another unsensational meal after my unsensational lunch. I am thinking I will do lunch there and scout out the menu for you this Sunday if it isnt too late. Chinese dining is pretty low on ambience everywhere. I'd say that the Sichuan Gourmet on 37th and corner 28's upstairs dining room can be sort of ok for parties. but then the food at corner 28 leaves something to be desired......

Taiwanese Restaurants in Flushing - recommendations?

The best Taiwanese joint featuring 3 cup chicken around the flushing area is 故鄉 (Gu Xiang) restaurant. The one at Red Chopsticks is hit and miss at best. I have had it there at times it is salty and while there is a mound of basil there is no basil flavor at all. While the 3 cup chicken is great at Gu Xiang, there are some stuff that isnt so great. I have had a taiwanese winter staple at Guxiang the aged ginger duck that was really great. This you have to order ahead of time because it takes time to prep. a few of my friends also really love the stirfried stinky tofu. the place is pretty cheap so it cannot hurt to try.

Queens Crossing "Mulan" Restaurant?

I had lunch today with my friend at the korean place. It was pretty much a waste of time.
My friend is a architect and a interior designer, and i work for a interior design and construction firm. So the enviroment seemed rather contrived and brutish to us. The decor is not particularly interesting or beautiful to look at. But it must be considered a massive upgrade for Flushing.
The menu was very long, Its not a fusion menu at all. Pretty standard of most Large Korean restaurants in Flushing such as KumGang San. They had a bar menu that seemed more experimental. But we decided ordered standard korean fairs not taking a chance with the sushi and sashimi selections. We ordered their special Gingsen Kalbi. and Pork Belly. Some seafood pancake and other appetizers. Overall the food was not bad(my friend didnt like it at all) Pork belly was 3 thick slabs sprinkled with coarse salt. The meat looked very nicely marbled but didnt taste very porky. The Kalbi dish came in a pot with marinade and some vegitables. It was tender and slightly too sweet. Note that they do not have charcoal for the bbq. its done on a gas burner and they have a discreet but effective vent which comes out from the bottom of the table. I asked for some lettuce to wrap my bbq in, and was told they dont have any. Also missing are the grilled mackeral and steamed egg custard which are my favorite parts of the meal and standard korean side dish in flushing korean joints. The bill was no more expensive then usual.
Over all, the restaurant looks pretty nice, taste decent, and at lunch time(2pm) on Saturday, they had more wait staff then patrons. I will probabaly return again at some point just for the heck of it.

On another note: we checked out a tea place called Rose home which have a english tea service and sell tea and tea ware. We didnt get to have tea there but it seems very popular. The decor is a little more authentic and things smell very good. Thats gonna to for tomorrow I think.
We had some desert at JoJo cafe in the same plaza. They have gelato, frozen yogurt, and food. desert was very mediocre, and gelato is fairly good. At least its the only place that have gelato on mainstreet if i am not wrong. They also have a expresso machine there and its cheaper then starbucks.
On our way back to the car, we watched a lady clean the golden mice statue carefully with a brush, the gold foil is starting to chip off around the top...
Tonight i think i will try Mulan. the other place in the plaza. I doubt it will be very good but i hope i am proven wrong.Flushing is really my favorite neighborhood in new york, I wish there are more high end dining establishments here. the restaurants at Queens Crossing is a step up, but I think we still have a long way to go here in flushing.

Do you know where can I find baby pea leaves to make salads?

They should have them in some Chinese markets in Chinatown, In flushing, they have them all year round in chinese supermarkets. They go for almost 8 dollars a pound i think.

Small, Intimate, Beautiful

Annisa came across my mind, i will see if there are any reservations available.

Small, Intimate, Beautiful

Any tiny, intimate, but beautifully designed restaurants serving decent to good food? I am taking out a good friend for birthday. I hate big loud restaurants. No budget, any cuisine goes. Fine dining perfered, but i guess you cannot have everything.

Uni Sea Urchin

I wasnt offered to special order them. Maybe I should call back and ask if they can. Its not a particularly expensive item, so maybe they wont go through the trouble.

Uni Sea Urchin

Just called Citarella and they do not have any live sea urchins. Where else might i find live Sea Urchins in the city. Need it for Friday. Please Help. Thanks ahead of time.
