Denver Restaurants: A Few Ideas/Opinions
PastaJohn - thanks for letting me know about Olive Oil! We need better restaurants in Littleton - I am so excited to go to Tipsy's and try it out! (and if you ever drive on c-470, you can't miss Tipsy's! Off of Bowles exit and just huge!)
granby colorado....anything to eat?
If you are willing to go for an about 45 minute drive, you should not miss Tabernash Tavern. You need reservations - don't just try to drop in as it is always booked - but it is well worth it. Wonderful wine list, great starters (don't miss the meat and cheese plate with olives), and their trout with honey is amazing! (and I HATE fish if that tells you something). Also good bets in Grand Lake - for cheap tex mex, pancho & lefty's, and the Rapids is still pretty good although their new menu isn't as good as their old one. I second Claire's advice on Devil's Thumb (but then, I don't think I ever disgree with Claire - she is my dining guru!).
Need a variety of recs in Colorado, very last minute....
Colorado Springs is a varitable food wasteland. But, La Baguette is great for lunch - great french onion soup. quiche, etc. Very french, but without the attitude. :-) if you are looking to go expensive, The Summit restaurant (expensive) or Penrose room (also expensive) are good. But, I really like the Golden Bee at the Broadmoor - pretty good pub food but the live piano player and group singing is hilarious. Not much for breakfast in the Springs - the Omelette parlour is pretty good, not outstanding, but tasty. You would have better foodie luck driving over to Manitou Springs....
In Denver, I LOVE Sushi Den. They fly their fish in every day and even Zagat's says it is some of the best sushi in the country. Good wine list too. But, if you want the local meat scene, people seem to love Elway's . I like the Fort (I know people will hate me for bringing it up since it is a little cliche) but it is an institution - great views, great buffalo and elk, and if you are a Bizarre Foods fan, you can always get Rocky Mountain Oysters there (yech!).
ALASKA eats! (help with trip planning)
I don't know if it is still open but if it is, go to 229 restaurant on the road to Denali. We went there in August 2006. Wonderful food, laid back atmosphere, great service. I had the scallops and they were wonderful. Being "foodies" it was nice to find such a great place near Denali NP.
Italian in Northern Virginia
I second the A La Lucia recommendation - make sure you call ahead though - they can get quite busy.
Asia Nine
Went on tuesday night. Our service was great although I saw some others that weren't having good experiences. But, our waitress was prompt and good with refilling our glasses. The sushi was only ok - it was about the same quality as sushi-go-round but more expensive. I will say that the eel was quite good. I got the seaweed salad for a starter - also good but nothing special. My dining companion got the green curry - she said it was nice and spicy but not very complex. The wine list by the glass is lovely. I think I would go back there for drinks but not for dinner again. It has a fun atmosphere so it would be a good place to hang out with friends, although the bar area is quite small.
Near the Hyatt Regency, Capitol Hill
Bistro Bis also has amazing scallops. I work over here and it is mostly a dining wasteland but Bistro Bis is great. Second on the Johnny's although I like BB better.
dining near 11th and E NW for tonight
I would walk the 3 blocks over to 9th street - Zaytinya (9th and G) is tasty and not too expensive. Also good and inexpensive and with Lighter offerings in chinatown - Jaleo (7th and E) and Oya (has a nice prix fixe for $30 - 9th and G).
Jackson 20 Open in Old Town Alexandria
went there for lunch last week. fast service, good wine list by the glass (i know, alcohol at lunch - how un-american!) their grilled ceasar salad was delish.
Best English High Tea in NoVa
I also vote for Ritz Carlton but I must say that I like the Pentagon City one a lot. (Menus are the same) I like the one in Tyson's but I like the room at Pentagon city - with its dark decor and fireplace - better than the many windowed room in Tysons. But both are nice - just depends on what setting you are looking for.
Dining around spy museum or Holocaust museum
I agree with Elyssa, as usual. I would also add Teaism for a inexpensive lunch by the spy museum and Zaytinya for dinner.
3 days in DC looking for some good eats
Also, this time of year, the US Botanical Gardens are fun - their holiday exhibit is really amazing with monuments made out of various plant materials - fun to see - http://www.usbg.gov/whats-happening/exhibits/Holidays-at-the-USBG.cfm. Also, the remodeled Partrait Gallery in Chinatown is very interesting - and there are a lot of places to eat lunch/dinner right around there.
3 days in DC looking for some good eats
If you are from NYC, skip Rosa Mexicano - it is a sister restaurant to the one you have there. But, I agree that the guac is good there.
Recent visits to Central?
I think the charcuterie plate at Central is delish - I get that when hanging out at the bar with my meat-eating girl friends - esp. like the little salad on the top.
Vegetarian Friendly places around Metro Center?
If you can extend to Penn quarter, Rasika has a lovely selection of vegetarian dishes. Get the palak chaat - you won't be sorry.
Dinner around Dupont Circle
Not sure what you are looking for - I always enjoy Mark and Orlando's (good and you can pick upstairs or downstairs depending on your mood). Tabard Inn and Pesce are good as well. On the high end, there's always Nora and Obelisk.
Restaurant Suggestions in Monmouth County, NJ
Hello from a DC Hounder! I had to reply - just went to Nicholas in Middletown on Saturday. Wow! They are really pushy about the alcohol but if you can get past that, the food is fantastic - very expensive but actually worth every penny. We went there with my in-laws and no one got a dish that was not exquisite. Their Pumpkin Agnolotti was so melt in your mouth and I have never had better scallops than the Seared Day Boat Sea Scallops. My in-laws said this place has changed since they went there a year ago - much different and much better. So, if you don't mind expensive, you should check this place out! And if you like Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans, don't miss the Beignets with chickory coffee ice cream for dessert - almost as good as Cafe Du Monde!
Los Amigos, Del Ray mainstay, closed
Thank you for the update - I hadn't seen this yet - although I had switched to Los Tios as I am sure a lot of people did. But, it is sad that we will no longer have their holiday displays to look at!
Proof
Thank you all Hounders! Appreciate your help. We went on Thursday. It was nice but I wouldn't go there to eat again - it seemed like the food was not good enough to justify the expense. But, the wine bar is great and I will go back there for Hapy hour. And Elyssa- I agree with you on the Post reviews - I was just overwhelmed by the shear number of bad ones!
Proof
We have a reservation for Proof tomorrow but there are some bad reader reviews coming in on the Post website - is it worth the money? Thanks!
Looking for pre-theater dinner in Old Town ALexandria
Are you driving? If so, I have to give a pitch for my neighborhood - Del Rey - both Del merei grill (casual American) and RT's (but bring a very empty stomach!) are great for good but casual dining - and are only 5-10 mins from Old Town.
Driving back from Pittsburgh to D.C.
If you decide to stop in frederick, there is a fabulous Ethiopian restaurant downtown - Tajitu, on East Patrick - I have been there 3 times and loved each experience.
best restaurant in Alaska
Thank you so much for this review! My husband and I agree 100%. We read your review and then went to 229 restaurant in August 2006. Wonderful food, laid back atmosphere, great service. I also had the scallops and they were wonderful. Being "foodies" it was nice to find such a great place near Denali.
