White Cornmeal in Boston?(Not $8 lb.)

If you can wait until next Saturday, Mainstone Farm (Wayland) will be at the Wayland Winter Farmer's Mkt and they sell 2 lb bags of white cornmeal, stoneground on the farm, for $7. It is delicious -- have made spoon bread with it, and it's excellent. Tomorrow morning, it's Johnnycakes.

humanely raised, locally sourced pork butts for bbq, any ideas?

well, I'll 4th for pete + jen's, but i'm not sure the OP would absolutely find a pork butt in their honor-store freezers, whereas at Codman or Drumlin (both in Lincoln), which are lesser-known in town, he/she might actually find one.
I get my meat from Chestnut on a monthly basis, and I will vouch for its excellence, but when I'm out (yes, it happens), I'll run over to my locals and they almost always have something delicious in the freezer. Often, in fact, pork butts.

Check the freezers at Codman Community Farm; they often have pork shoulders in there. Also, call Drumlin Farm; I think several of their pigs "went to market" recently. Another option is to join a meat CSA - John Crow, Apple Cheek (from VT but they have local drop-offs), Chestnut Farms, to name a few.

Humane eggs?

You'll have to drive to Lincoln, and they're not always available, but Drumlin Farm's eggs are the best I've had around (and I've tried them all, believe me), and are delightfully only $4.50/dozen. Pastured eggs, from chickens moved around the farm in the chicken tractor. Yolks as orange as, well, an orange. Drumlin, being an Audubon property, is also concerned about the well-being and happy lives of all of their animals, whether they're raised for food (pigs, lambs, goats) or raised to provide food (chickens).

Where to buy rabbit in Metrowest?

Wow, that's an excellent price. The rabbit I bought from P&J's was around $30 total ($10/lb), if I recall correctly. Worth it, I thought, especially since I was certain it was raised humanely and happily. But $8? That might merit a drive to Woburn!!


Concord Tea Cakes makes beautiful little currant scones, rich and flaky and only lightly sweet. You can buy a big box of mini-scones which will disappear waaaay too fast. They're in West Concord; not sure if they sell them anywhere else off-site.

Where to buy rabbit in Metrowest?

It's a small door at the very far right-hand end of the stables building. There's a chicken on the door, I think. It's a self-serve honor shop, much like the one at Codman and Natick Community Farms. In the fall they had their own organic greens and herbs, lots of frozen lard, bacon, offal, other pork cuts etc.

Pete and Jen's Backyard Birds in Concord raise rabbits as well as chickens. I bought a frozen one from their self-service shop next to Verrill Farm stables on Wheeler Rd. They are planning to be at the Wayland Winter Farmers' Market in March, and I think they'll have rabbits for sale. BTW, it was wonderful braised in mustard, as lapin a la moutarde. A great meal on its own with a salad one night, then I shredded the leftover meat and thinned the remaining sauce and served it over handmade noodles. Rabbit has a lovely flavor, not unlike a cross between chicken and pork.

great local eggs

Many of the vendors at the Wayland Winter Farmers' Market have eggs, all local and presumably of excellent quality. Saturdays from 10-2 at Russell's Garden Center on Rt 20. Also, and again a bit far from Brookline, but Codman Community Farm in Lincoln has their own eggs in a self-serve fridge, and when they don't have their own, they carry Chip In.

Not sure if you've ever noticed but those clamshell packages of salad greens sold at most supermarkets are 3.99 for 5 oz., so yes, you get one more ounce in them for the same price Siena charges, but for freshly-hand-cut, locally grown, triple-washed greens, I'll gladly pay any premium. You're right, it is an investment: an investment in local agriculture and your health!

One dinner away from Boston

Go to Providence and eat at La Laiterie/Farmstead in Wayland Square. Have brunch the next morning at Nick's on Broadway. A fabulous weekend away, and you could even take the train there!

Not Newton, but I think they have them at the Wine Gallery on rt 9 in Brookline.

Copley Square Farmer's Market, and others (check website listed above) begin the Tuesday before Memorial Day, so that's May 19th this year. Not much early on, but there are vegetables to be sure.

Ha! I had no idea Nashoba Brook closed that location! Sorry to hear it... it was a good spot.
On the Viga note... I walked past it by chance the other day, having never heard if it at all, and was amazed to see a line of people waiting outside before noon! That is always a good sign, IMO. Not sure how the food is, having never eaten there myself, but if you can get people lined up for lunch, you're doing something right.

mike + patty's make excellent sandwiches and use iggy's multigrain (with flax!). they're in bay village (church street), so not too far away.
also, nashoba brook bakery on columbus. great sandwiches on their own bread.

Puy lentils in/near Brookline

You have to look hard, but they're there (I do think they were gone for a while, though)... in the dried fruit section, at the bottom, in pint containers. Not too expensive, either ($2.99 for a pint). I miss them in bulk, but pints are better than nothing.
When I need them in bulk and don't mind a nice drive out of the city, I go to Debra's Natural Gourmet in West Concord. Reasonably priced and you can get as much as you need (their bulk section is one of the best I've seen around here).
Also, I'm told by a relative that the "new" Whole Foods in West Medford still has them in bulk.

Best Boston Burger

Craigie on Main. Best burger in town. So simple, but perfectly seasoned meat (local, grass-fed). Rich, but wonderful. And (thankfully) not on a brioche.

locally raised ham for xmas

Whole Foods in Brighton has Misty Knoll turkeys, from central Vermont (near Middlebury) -- my favorite turkey, hands down, by far. Not too, too far away, so maybe still technically "local"? $3.99/lb, IIRC.

Where to find Q or Fevertree Tonic?

Does this mean when you order a G&T or a V&T or anything T-related at Rialto, you'll get Q? Because that means a lot to a person who's off HFCS. A whole lot, let me tell you!
I can't even always get a proper drink (ie devoid of the awful stuff) in my own family's home, unless I bring the T myself, let alone at a bar! I've always wondered what a bar would do if I BMOT (brought my own tonic)! I'd love to know if there's a wonderful, blissful even, HFSC-free-G&T zone in town...

Can anybody else "smell" fruit flies?

So I've done some fairly extensive web research (read: about 5 minutes with Google) that has brought up nothing on this topic, and maybe (my completely forgotten) high school biology would explain this for me, but can anyone else smell a fruit fly when it lands in a glass of wine?

I've been testing myself for a while now, ever since I noticed it: smell wine in kitchen utterly run amuck with fruit flies (it is summer, after all, and all those tomatoes must smell divine to a fruit fly), wait until a fly lands in glass, smell again. A definite, more "fermented-y" smell. Then, pick fly out, wait 5 minutes, smell again.The smell has dissipated and gone back just about to normal. I've smelled this same fruit fly "scent" in my composter; other people in my family have told me I'm crazy and a fruit fly in and of itself has no discernible "smell".

So.... am I crazy? Has anyone smelled the difference in their wine pre-fly and post-fly? Or is this something everyone encounters and the non-believers in my family really are people without good senses of smell (which could actually, possibly be the case.... hmmmm)? I need help.

Boston Copley Sq Farmers' Market - worth going?

Things currently growing that you might see at the market: radishes, green garlic, greens of all sorts, asparagus (local, Mass asparagus is heavenly), herbs, etc. It's early still, but stuff is coming up. Give the market a try.

Duck legs - where can I buy them (MetroWest)?

It has been about a year or so since Whole Foods had them last... they discontinued them because the company they were buying from was actually a foie gras outfit, selling legs and breasts as a side venture. As went the city of Chicago, so went Whole Foods in banning foie of all sorts, so even the duck farms that specialize in foie were out. Now you can only find whole ducks from Bell & Evans at WFM, which are nice but not quite as meaty as the plump, foie-fattened birds of the former purveyor. Sad. They used to sell legs for $4.50 or so for a pack of 2, so it was completely reasonable to buy them there for confit/rillettes. No more :(

Thanks for the info! I also just remembered that has a bunch of listings in different cities, so I'll look there as well. We'll definitely look for some Pietra; I, too, spent 10 days in Corsica a few years ago (gee, almost 10 now!) but I never tried it. Mostly drank Kronenbourg on the beach!

Beer Lover's Paris?

Hello to all -- a quick question. My husband and I are heading to Paris next weekend for a short trip and I wondered if anyone could suggest some good places serving interesting, artisan beers. I am a wine drinker, but while my husband will drink wine with meals when other options aren't available, he always prefers beer (small producers, interesting flavors, never "lite"... he's deep into beer like many Chowhounders are into wines). So... will there be a beer option at many bistros? Or is wine always du rigeur? And if not, are there good places to go to try some interesting European brews we might not be able to find here in Boston?
Oh: we have reserved at L'Os a Moelle and L'Epi Dupin and plan to wander and snack/drink/picnic our way through the remaining 3 days... oysters here, a baguette and a bag of fruit from the market there, tartines, charcuterie and cheese plates from wine/beer bars, etc. Hoping to eat well on completely limited funds (the hotel is a fortune!!). We will be staying in the 1st but we're more than willing to travel by Metro, and I speak French so even hidden-away places shouldn't be too much of a challenge.

Organic Butcher Shop in Boston area?

I will second (or third) Lionette's on Tremont in the South End.
For semi-prepared meats and charcuterie etc I would try both Formaggio Kitchen and South End Formaggio -- they're both making some excellent sausages, pates, cured hams, tongue, etc.
And I think the company called Dole & Bailey might be worth a try - they are, as far as I can tell, a distributor of locally-raised meats from many New England farms and are the reason that my local Brighton Whole Foods is selling almost entirely local beef (well, a whole lot more than before, anyway) nearly every time I'm in there, which is a lot in the winter.
Other than that, I have to say that Boston isn't the best destination for independent organic butcher shops... say you'll stay after your course and open one up? We could sure use it.
