Dinner in Durham/CH, pulling all the stops

And if you are lingering @ 8 pm, they will rush you so it will be emptied out by 8:30. Been there and regardless of the food(excellent) I found this practice quite inhospitable

Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe in Chapel Hill now open

We were there on Wednesday evening. It was lovely.I agree that the flavors were fresh and distinctive. I had a chole roti roll and my husband had the Vegetarian Thali, both excellent. Sitting outside was a bonus. Highly recommended. Can't wait to go back.

Piedmont, Durham

I was there with a group of 4 on the same night. It may have just been an off night. The food was quite good, (I had the endive goat cheese apple risotto -- wonderful) but it took an extremely long time to get to our table. What's more, the server was indifferent to our plight as we waited 30 minutes for our salads and another 30 for the mains. We all agreed we would not return again soon.

Last time in Chicago we ate at Tru, but this time must watch our budget

We are serious foodies making a go of it in North Carolina and will visit our favorite city next weekend. We are looking for a great night out that won't break the bank, as we recently went from two incomes to one and have kids in college. Looking for that wonderful dining experience that we can only have in Chicago. In the past we've dined at Charlie Trotters and Spiaggia, but appreciate something truly great that's more under the radar, perhaps. Anywhere in the city is fine. Recommendations?

What's New in Chapel Hill?

Went to Buns last night. The burgers were great -- high quality beef cooked perfectly. They had a huge selection of burger toppings and dipping sauces for the wonderful fries. Plus, with drinks (a beer and a glass of wine), dinner for the two of us was under $20. When the students get back I predict there will be a line out front. The service was great, too and they told us they'll be staying open until 3AM beginning end of summer.

Babbo - terrible experience!

My husband and I had dinner at Babbo this past Wednesday. It was our second time there. The food was superb as was the wine service and waitstaff. The pasta dishes, especially, were incredible. Battali was cooking on Wednesday, maybe that made a difference, maybe not. We love the room, the energy and yes, the music, in addition to the well-executed food.

Dream Catcher Cafe in Chapel Hill - Anyone know anything?

We went to Dream Catcher tonight, even though reports above were mixed at best. Well, by 7:45 they had run out of both the fish of the day and the advertised cassoulet special. We were instructed by the waitress to just order the steak or chicken. Too bad. We waited and watched the waitress and another server (there are only 12 tables and maybe 8 were full) ) work on cleaning up a table and putting new settings down (together) for what seemed like an eternity before she came back to take our order.
We had a roasted butternut squash, spinach and hazelnut salad to begin. Nice idea, but uninspired in execution. I had roasted chicken, my husband had the mussels appetizer for his main course. The chicken was okay, but definitely not worth the high price.

Wine was good and reasonably priced. We thought that perhaps after a year of operation it was worth the risk. NOT. Never again.

ICA - Holiday Dessert Battle (spoiler)

This was ridiculous. The Food Network has jumped the shark.

"Food Entertainment Network" - Enough Already

I totally agree. Without Batali, Ming Tsai and Sara Moulton it's just not worth my time. I watched to learn from talented and engaging chefs, not to see Paula Dean cackle and pour confectioner's sugar over a competitor on ICA.

Is there another option on TV?

We're going to Park City between Christmas and New Years --Mom and Dad and our 18 year old and 16 year old. We're really well traveled foodies -- is there anything there we shouldn't miss?

Where to eat near Hotel Palomar?

My husband and I stayed at Palomar two weeks ago. Great hotel. We walked to Obelisk, just down the street -- fantastic Italian. I had an incredible goat cheese gnocchi and a good shrimp appetizer plus some cheeses to die for. The wines were also quite good. We also had a nice late night meal at Firefly, also walking distance just around Dupont Circle, which was a lot of fun.

DC Pizza

Actually, I was looking for New Haven style as that's my favorite. I live in NC and can't find good pizza anywhere, so I thought DC would be a good bet to satisfy the craving while we're visiting.

We are heading to DC for the weekend, and would like to get some good pizza, NY style, thin crust and greasy. What's our best bet? We'll be near Dupont Circle.

Electric teakettle recommendations?

I have a capresso and love it. It's beautiful and efficient and I don't know what I ever did without it.

Batali got the boot (from FN)

I met him at the bar at Blue Ribbon one night a few years ago and I thought he was warm and fun and down to earth. Also love his food.

Everything tastes like bacon [moved from Home Cooking boad]

I used my all clad grill pan to cook bacon a few times too many and now everything tastes like bacon. Any advice on how to clean it? Or do I have to get a new one and dedicate this one to bacon?

Starlu in durham

I ate there a few months ago and it was one of the worst meals I have had in a while. Totally uninspired and tasteless. Plus expensive. Won't be going back.

Durham/CH grad weekend

Went to Panciuto's last weekend and although the place was beautiful the food was so salty I couldn't eat it and they tried to get us through the restaurant in 45 minutes. Not a good experience.
