Reunion dinner for 6?

Gautreaux. Uptown on Soniat Street on the Lake side of St. Charles. Reopened in March, and it's a step up in food from Clancy's, I think. And it's far more cozy and not as loud - better for conversations. No pretense, just quality.

vegetarian in new orleans

The Gumbo Shop on Toulouse, in the Quarter, offers a special vegetarian gumbo, called Gumbo Z'Herbes. It was a traditional Lenten dish, but the chef there, Richard Stewart, developed a completely Vegan version, using smoked mushrooms to give it a hearty taste. True Creoles raise an eyebrow, but some here welcome innovation.

Also, there's a place uptown near Tipitina's called Dick and Jennie's. They have a vegetarian Lasagna that's better than any meated one I've ever had.

BYOB

Baru. Brand new Carribean place on the corder of Magazine and Amelia. BYOB and they have some outside tables.

Luke Last Night

In addition to only being open a short time, they've opened to one of the peak restaurant weekends in the city: 2nd Jazz Fest weekend. Many locals skip the eating out because it throws more than they can handle to even the most professionally run operations. I'm sure they've got some things to learn, however, some extra slack might be offered for the bravery of setting sail in a tidal wave.
If you're in town long enough, try Meauxbar Bistro on North Rampart. It's small enough that they can pay attention to you, but just large enough to have good energy. Also, they've been around long enough to know the service rhythms that work in their place. Ginger-crawfish dumplings are a favorite of mine. Cheers!

Good Chow + WiFi near Canal St?

A reliable southern-style diner with hot lunch, veggies cooked in animal fats, and classic breakfast each morning: Steve's diner. Wi-Fi, too. They are open early, but then close mid-afternoon. Gravier between Carondolet and O'Keefe - walking distance easy from your location.
Now, if you want great chow, I've heard that Coop's Place...1109 Decatur Street, New Orleans, LA 70116... has ridiculously good gumbo along with their wifi. More of a bar atmosphere, which can have it's charm. Cab it from your hotel unless you love the sweaty walk.
Enjoy your visit and please, come back real soon.
