Good Filipino Food in Vancouver?
The closest to mid-scale would've been the now defunct rekados.
Good Filipino Food in Vancouver?
Nothing will ever match what you'd get from home or at family parties. I'm sure that applies to many other cusines. Moreover, it's always hard to match a dish with the orignial on different turf, like Max's Chicken (or tacos, okonomiyaki, etc.). I haven't been yet, but Kulinarya in Coquitlam seems to be getting good reviews.
Vancouver 3 Day visit - on a budget
If you're already in the area of Cafe Medina, you can also check out the spots around that part of the city: Revolver (coffee), another iteration of Guu on Water St., nuba for Mediterranean, Meat and Bread as well as Finch's for sandwiches.
Universal Bakery--closed
I sort of laid the groundwork earlier in the week during dinner and asked about it for this weekend. It took a bit of time to make but well worth it for taste and price. Very happy they made this special request.
Universal Bakery--closed
I was having my sayonara modanyaki at Kimura, and I noticed another place in the 'hood is gone. I never got the sense that they were doing poorly. I heard from some fellow diners that part of that block on Rupert is being re-zoned. I hope the bakery re-opens (nearby) to continue to provide those Portuguese egg tarts and buns.
Kimura change of ownership
Really sad to see Kimura go. I've lived in this 'hood Collingwood for decades, and there's never been a cool (food, staff, looks, jazz records) place like this, ever. I too am going to squeeze in a couple more meals before the changeover.
Charlies - chocolate easter bunnies etc
Don't forget the running chocolate river in the store! Also passed by this place for years and only started going to the spot in the last couple.
Food on VIA (Canadian rail) versus Amtrak (American rail)
I agree with GS on VIA, especially about the crew and the fellow travellers. I took the Canadian sleeper class from TO-Van last August. I was surprised with the quality of the food considering I thought it would be cafeteria quality. The menu looked promising before I boarded, although this link is from today: http://www.viarail.ca/en/useful-info/onboard-train/meals/menus/toronto-vancouver-sleeper-plus I just wish there were more options for the wines by the glass. I was getting tired of the Wayne Gretzky Cab-Sav. I ended up buying a different bottle during one of the stopovers.
Friday afternoon drinks on a patio - Vancouver
If it's drinks only: Cardero's in Coal Harbour, Granville Island options: Bridges or Dockside, even the CFDs on English Bay (Boathouse, Milestones)
South Granville Eating
Stopped by for an early dinner tonight. I overheard they don't take resos. Cosy room, friendly staff, and it felt open with the windows looking onto w 12th. Everything's Mediterranean, including the wines. Had a couple of the bruschettas: the mushroom and marscapone and (my fave) fig, chevre and walnuts. The ravioli of braised lamb was delicious, and I liked the hint of orange zest on top. Then had the rich choco-marshmallow tart with marscapone chantilly and schmear of maple syrup caramel. I'd like to try their risottos next time. It gets busy pre- and post-Stanley theatre productions.
Chowhounds to the rescue!
There's definitely enough room for 6-8, maybe even for up to 15 spread among 4-5 tables. It's not a private room though, although there's some privacy from the rest of the room, if that makes any sense. I've always had a good time and meals anywhere at this Guu.
uhockey's delayed review of Richmond/Vancouver, 12/30/11-01/02/12 including L'Abbatoir, Vij's, Noodles, Dim Sum, etc.
Amazing report back as usual uhockey!
BRAZILIAN FOOD: Where to buy Manioc flour or Feijoada in Vancouver?
From their menu, it looks like Boteco Brasil has feijoada. Been meaning to go since it opened up last summer. Reviews have been alright:

Where can i find the Best Fried chicken in the GVRD
Got around to Chewies this evening. This place is always busy. The white meat chicken is moist with a hint of sweetness from the honey and butter marinade. It was good, but ever since tdeane mentioned Church's spicy chicken upthread, I've re-found my love of Church's and have polished off 2 of the 8 piece boxes over the last few weeks. I like to have that crunch from the battered skin. Chewies really doesn't offer that. Enjoyed the gumbo much more. Someone in our group had the large portioned beet salad, which also got raves.
Dine out.... Good, bad or indifferent?
I went on a Sat. night. Early eve shouldn't be a prob, but it got busy later on.
Dine out.... Good, bad or indifferent?
Prix fixe was good (papaya salad, peanut noodle dish, hot and sour mango lychee crumble--all for $20 with other choices available too). FeastVan on until Feb 5 http://feastvan.com/. They don't take reservations.
Dine out.... Good, bad or indifferent?
He's an interesting guy and got to chat before the place got slammed. Had to give him kudos for all the Filipino references on the drinks menu.

FeastVan at Union Bar this evening was a great deal for a great cause. Hope to go back soon to try out other cocktails with lemongrass, lime leaves, thai basil, pandan, or rambutan.
Best sandwich in Vancouver
this thread should help out: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/783935
many of the spots are in downtown

that's quite a survey of chicken pix YVRChow, nice! I looked up the location of Happy Day, and it's the old location of Lee's Chicken, IIRC. Now I"m wondering if it was just a change in name or complete change of menu because there were some Korean items at Lee's. I'm also curious about the Duffin's version you mentioned upthread. Definitely not a "crazy recommendation". When I've looked up other fried chicken places on CH boards for the southern USA, I was surprised at how many people swear by places like Duffin's or even convenience / corner stores.

For the marinated in buttermilk variety, you can try ReFuel and the less than a month old Chewies. Other takes on fried chicken wings include Phnom Penh (Cambodian) and Zabu (Korean).
French Made Baking
The guy before me had a sandwich, which I guess was from there. No idea about the filling. The only items on display were sweet baked goods, along with 49th parallel coffee and kusmi tea and Terra bread baguette IIRC. They do have combos for brekkie, lunch, and after that include a sandwich + sweet item + coffee / tea.
French Made Baking
Also had my first ever canalé. Surprisingly soft inside. Apparently the portion they serve is about 3-4x the size of the one-bite version. Nice macarons too and weren't as chewy as Thierry. They expect to have a couple of tables next week, as well as more goodies.
Good Cantonese late-nite snacks ("da lang"/打冷) places ?
That name is going to bug me now because I'd go there all the time, dirty carpet et al. It was convenient for post-bar closing nibbles.
ISO Thai tea leaves
Asia Market on Hastings. Have a look at this thread too: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/705905
Passion Fruit Puree
I recognized the name of the Peruvian town but didn't know it's also the name of a drink. You get the play on word thing happening too.
