Farmstead/ Artisinal Cheese on UWS?

I wound up going to Zabar's and they had several. I bought Pt Reyes Blue, Coach Farms Goat, Cypress Grove Midnight Moon Goat and Cowgirl Creamery Mt Tam. I have to visit Saxelby's the next time I am down that way. The Uplands Pleasant Ridge Reserve is also on my list to try! Thanks for all the comments.

Farmstead/ Artisinal Cheese on UWS?

Hi,
I am looking for farmstead cheeses on the UWS. I looked into West Side Cheese Company first but the number I have says it is no longer in business and is 20+ blocks away from me. Otherwise, I am thinking to check out Whole Foods. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

ISO Kitchen Organization Ideas for a Galley Kitchen with 1 Drawer

I should have mentioned the space is quite narrow and prevents us from hanging our pots and other things we have hung in the past. In our last place, although the kitchen was smaller, we had plenty of space for hanging. Unfortunately, not this one. Thank you for the idea though.

We demo'd a night table and it looks as though 13 inch width will work if the table legs are in about an inch with the counter overhanging.

ISO Kitchen Organization Ideas for a Galley Kitchen with 1 Drawer

Hi all,

I am in need of advice for a kitchen organization idea for my galley kitchen that has only 1 drawer. That one drawer fits 1 set of 8 place setting utensils.

We have a cut-out space underneath the window that is 11.25" depth from the molding to the wall or 12" to the wall. Length is 59" molding to molding or 61" to the wall. Would like 34" height.

Our needs- more drawer space for storing knives and other kitchen utensils. And, possibly a drawer for all of the spices. Also need a shelf or two for room for pots and pans and cast iron pots. A place for food prep.

Our options
1) InterMetro Steel Kitchen Shelves to place pots/pans. And, Elfa unit with drawers for the utensils alongside. Would get butcher block to chop on.

2) Custom Wood console/modified sofa table fit to specs having 2-3 drawers and 1-2 shelves

I have tried many unfinished furniture stores and online places- None of which accommodate the depth easily. I am in touch with 2-3 carpenters right now. One quote was for 2800.

I am getting sick of spending money on things made in china and having to throw out every few years. The appeal of having a custom piece sounds good and I would love to be able to do food prep while looking out the window.

Any thoughts?

Ideas to improve kitchen set-up?

Agree with a lot of what people said. I have a fraction of the amount of cabinets you have- I would recommend installing a pull out mesh drawer for dry goods/bagged stuff in your bottom cabinets. It provides much easier access to things in the back and has been very convenient and useful. http://www.containerstore.com/shop/kitchen/cabinetOrganizers/lowerCabinets?productId=10009301

I'd also recommend getting some type of divider so you can store things upright in your cabinets.
Like this one:

These things along with Ikea's Grundtal wall rails with S hooks where I hang my cutting boards, most utensils, drying rack when not in use, and most of my pots and pans, really utilize the space well.

Good luck!

vitalchoice.com for fish?

Thanks so much-

vitalchoice.com for fish?

This was just recommended to me but of course, I am hesitant to have fish delivered when I live in a city and have an array of choices. I just saw the Cove and am feeling more suspicious if the fish I actually choose is really what it I am getting. Anyone order from them? Think it's really worth it?

Favorite Veg Cookbook?

It doesn't necessarily have to be entitled "Vegetarian" but if you had to name one or two that you reach for most, what would they be? Any Cooks Illustrated you'd recommend?

Good and not too pricy- Extra Virgin Olive Oil ?

It WAS fun... I highly recommend it!

Thanks so much for the link!

Good and not too pricy- Extra Virgin Olive Oil ?

Thanks for the suggestions. Is the Tuscan style oil Murray's listed here?
http://www.murrayscheese.com/products.asp?dept=15&pagenumber=1&sort_on=&sort_by=

So... we went on a little tasting tour last weekend and have to say there was a french oil from fig & olive that was very green, grassy with a good bite at the end that we loved. We then went to O & Co. and honestly, the only oil that had clarity and flavor for me was the newest oil they had from 2009 but boy, was it pricey. The hipster guy at O & Co. couldn't have been friendlier and he admitted how marked up the prices are in the US compared with Europe. He is so devoted to OO that he goes every year and brings back 4 (yes 4) tins worth of EVOO in his suitcase that he declares and it still saves him plenty of money.

It was great fun though and both places were beyond gracious.

Good and not too pricy- Extra Virgin Olive Oil ?

Do you think O & Co is worth a shot if willing to spend a little more for a good finishing oil?

Steel Cut Oats NYTimes Recipe

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/08/health/nutrition/08recipehealth.html

What do you all think of this method? After doing a search through the boards, many people have an overnight method for steel cut oats and I'm curious how it compares to this method. And, freezing in ice cubes for future use? I'd think some of the nutritional value may be lost when re-heating but maybe not.

Oven Crispy Fish- 425 or 500?

my hesitancy with the rack is that the fish will flake and separate through when trying to remove it. have you experienced this?

Would you please comment on this vegetarian Christmas menu?

i agree with a baked pasta dish... and you could assemble that the day before. you could do a butternut squash/sage lasagna alongside the quiche

and if you want to cut down on the starches, instead of a potato gratin, you could do cauliflower. I've done this and it is delicious. http://foodandstyle.wordpress.com/2009/11/17/cauliflower-gratin-with-nutmeg/

Oven Crispy Fish- 425 or 500?

I want the fish to be crispy (as close to pan frying as possible) but there are 2 recipes I am looking at with 2 pretty different instructions. Which do you think will be more crisp?

http://www.registerguard.com/csp/cms/sites/web/news/sevendays/24234901-35/fish-fresh-panko-fat-fillets.csp

This suggests cooking the fish on a metal rack type sheet at 425.

This is at 500 on a baking sheet. Do you think I could use a cast iron oval gratin instead?

TIA

iPhone apps and the foodie

I find I use the Epicurious app for looking up recipes when I want to try a different bulk grain for soups or want to do something different for dinner. It is very user friendly app and will even make a shopping list for a certain recipe.

I'll have to check out grocery IQ. Although, I tend to use the Notes app where my standard grocery list is.

Green tinge to ground lamb??

The links are very helpful. Thank you.

Green tinge to ground lamb??

I agree that $10 worth of meat is not worth the risk of being sick and plan to bring in the receipt for a refund. I was curious if there was any other explanation other than a microorganism.

Green tinge to ground lamb??

I purchased a lb of ground lamb on friday (with the date until dec 8) and the outside of the ground lamb has this green/blue tinge. The inside is completely pink. I called the store and they said it may be the ink from the USDA markings. Has anyone heard of this? They offered a complete refund but I have never seen this coloring or heard of this before.

Cooking Fish

Does the panko make the fish a bit crispy (similar to pan-frying)?

The flounder I have purchased at the market have twice now smelled a bit strong. I know this is a silly question but would one say a fresh piece of flounder would be similar to a fresh oyster smell (salty but not fishy/ammonia-y)? I am thinking I need to find a new fishmonger.

iPhone apps and the foodie

I agree that a chowhound app would be helpful. I am not a huge fan of chowhound in safari on the iphone. What do people who use CH on safari use it for when on their iPhone?

I like AroundMe and Epicurious too. I use epicurious all the time while in the supermarket.

Any recommendations for delivery to NY Downtown Hospital, post-partum?

I do not know any restaurants specifically but have you tried doing a search on seamlessweb? They will tell you which places deliver in that area after typing in information and you can call ahead about delivery. If they've delivered to the hospital before, they will be familiar with the logistics of coordinating it.

Also, it is likely the staff have ordered take out before in the neighborhood and will have suggestions for you. Your partner may have to meet them outside of the post partum unit/ labor and delivery by an entrance.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and birth!

Wedding Brunch Locations?

I have not been to a wedding brunch but someone just mentioned this website that assists with private dining experiences that may be helpful for you. https://www.dineprivate.com/restaurants/directory

Congratulations!

France Foodie Destinationa

Thank you for all of the suggestions and comments- After looking at some of the options, you all have confirmed Lyon as a true gastronomic destination.

Can anyone recommend some of the markets to visit? It looks like we'll be there on Fri and Sat morning.
We'd like to keep meals inexpensive but tasty!

Inexpensive W 80's Lunch Spots

Just went to Soup Stop last week and it was delicious. A bit dark so didnt spend much time hanging around but had Curry Lentil with a half of caesar wrap. HIt the spot!

Where would one suggest to go between Amsterdam and Provence that is conveniently located between or not too far from?
We are looking to travel somewhere between Amsterdam and Arles for 3 nights. We will be visiting too Paris.

Would love to find somewhere inbetween Amsterdam and Arles from Wed afternoon to Saturday that has a variety of markets, and a good place to have some downtime in cafes that is a walkable town/ city with access to other towns. Open to places by flight or train. Or, even bus!

Some places we were considering:
Lyon
Aix en Provence
Nice or other Cote d'Azur town

But, would love some other suggestions or thoughts.

Have been to Bruges, Brussels and London.

Thanks in advance!

Which Paris neighborhood for food?

Thank you both!

UWS Restaurants

Simon,

I agree! Although I will say that the grocery shopping is top notch up here compared to other neighborhoods. I guess when one has Fairway, Citarella, Zabar's, I more often than not think to myself that I can cook better than this after eating out/ ordering in.

Inexpensive W 80's Lunch Spots

cimui- around 10 or give a few.

Inexpensive W 80's Lunch Spots

I'll check out both- Thanks. Any places on the Upper 70's? This list is quite small!
