Greens Glorious Greens

You just never know how a city like Chicago can suprise you...
I LOVE greens (as much as a Northern can) and I just found the best greens I have had ouside of the deep South. At a Dominicks Food store...wow.
This Dominicks is at Fullerton and Sheffield in the Lincolm Park area, and is attached to a Dorm Hall of De Paul University. In the back of the store is a hot food take-out area, and in that display case lies the holy grail of greens.....glorious and glistening, smokey and meaty, spicy and silky.
Did I say WOW. This cook knows her potlikker. I never knew greens could have that depth of flavor...and in the back of a Dominicks store yet..
I am not the only one that has happened upon this glorious mess of greens. According to the deli clerk my new patron saint of greens only makes them twice a week, and when they are gone, they are gone. And they are gone fast. I didn't know there were other Green Gastronomes this far north...
I wonder what this lady can do with cornbread and peach cobbler...
If you love greens, or don't know them, and want to know EXACTLY what they should be like...venture in to the back of that Dominick's store some day.

Now what about some bolled p-nuts as a side?

Lombard Area week of Aug 15

If you like a good selection of great Indian food, try the buffet at Viceroy of India on Roosevelt Road, in Lombard. I know they have a lunch one, I'm not sure about dinner.

Foodies Rejoice...Buy Local Produce on the Farm...Lockport/Homer Glen near I355

Ok...I'd like to keep this farm a secret, cause we all know what tends to happen when something really good becomes well-known, but that's not fair to all my Foodie friends, so here goes....

Sahs Farm on Cedar Rd. in Homer Glen or Lockport? (I forgot to ask her which town she's in)

If you are interested in local food or buying from local farmers, this is the real thing.
A beautifully tended farm tucked away just off of I 355 near Rte 6. The Farmer is a knowledgeable woman, who know her crops, and brings out a wheelbarrow, bags, and baskets chock full of some of the freshest veggies around. You pick it, she weights it and pops it in a bag, and you are on you way. Shallots, garlic, wax and green beans, tiny little creamer red potatoes, or larger reds, lettuce, what ever is seasonally ripe. The pricing is very reasonable, slightly more than the usually faded and tasteless grocery store selection, but far less than most farmers markets.
High quality fresh and tasty produce at a very affordable price...this kind of place is what the local foods movement is all about!
Now, if we could just talk her into keeping some Buff Orpington chickens, and a Jersey cow or two...this farm would be total Nirvana. Losti

Excellent Non-Homogenized Milk (and Meat) from Jersey Dairy Farm !! [Fairbury IL]

Kilgas Farm in Fairbury Illinois (about 1.5 hrs from Chicago)is a family-run farm that opened 6/2009, and at the advise of a friend, I wandered in there last month...WOW. If you are into either local foods, great dairy and meats, or just like to see a friendly dairy farm up close, take a run down there.
They have a good sized farm store which,(believe it or not for those of us who have gotten used to seeing EVERYTHING in public locked down) works on the honor system when all the family members are busy. You will find no frills no P.R. no tourist trinkets...just the BEST dairy and meat around...with good prices also (tip...bring your ice-filled cooler, you will need it).

Non-homogenized milk is not raw or in any way unsafe. It has been pasturized (heated to kill pathogens), but not processed to the point that all the milk-fat (aka cream) was smooshed back into the milk so it wouldn't rise to the top...in other words, it has been left in its natural cow-like state.YEAH!! They have cream, half and half and 2 types of defatted milk(I ask you now what fun is that??!!), yogurt, soft serve ice cream, cheese from a local cheese farm and a huge selection of frozen meat from their cows, at very reasonable prices. I was a little wary of buying Jersey cow meat...I mean I know Jerseys give the riches milk...but meat??. Believe me, buy some. The brisket, ground beef , and pot roast were well trimmed and cooked-up soft and flavorful.

I could keep raving, I guess, but you have to see this place for yourself. Plot your course down there carefully...there are no signs about the farm until you get right on the property. So get a good map, and have faith...you will find it, right where it is supposed to be. ...and it smells just like it should. Bon appetite!

Good Eats near Joliet?

A little north of Joliet , but White Fence Farm is pretty much a south suburb institution. Family style fried chicken with sides. Joliet Road just south of Rte 55, Lemont Il.

West/South Suburban Farmers Markets

Hi everyone...I'm new here, and this looks like a wonderful site!

I know Downers Grove has a great Farmers market on Saturdays. Are there any others in the west or south suburban areas that you can suggest, either during the week or weekend?

Thanks, Tracee
