King Cake in San Jose

Does anybody know of any bakeries in the San Jose area that do King Cakes at Mardi Gras?

Thanks

Mother's - french dip sandwiches

I like the Ferdi Special at Mothers.

On our last trip to New Orleans, we tried Johnny's Po Boys on St Louis and definintely recommend it. The prices are lower than Mothers too.

New Orleans Tourist Chow, Done Right

Definitely Cafe du Monde for beignets and chicory coffee.

For po-boys, Johnny's on St. Louis is great. We like Mother's too.

We had some really good red beans and rice at Napoleon House - the roast beef po boy and shrimp remolaude salad were really good too.

The gumbo at Petunias is really good.

Where to eat in Breau Bridge?

We were there in June and had a great meal at Cafe des Amis. I would definitely recommend it. I had roast duck, which was really delicious and for dessert - bread pudding with white chocolate sauce. The menu states that the bread pudding is "amazingly good" and I have to agree. We liked the atmophere too. If we hadn't had a plane to catch in New Orleans the next morning, we would have been back for the Zydeco breakfast :)

Bakeries - Santa Cruz County

I am looking for good bakeries in Santa Cruz county, the closer to Aptos, the better. I need to order a sheet cake for my grandparents' 60th anniversary party. I live in San Jose and generally go to Aki's Bakery on Meridian for this sort of thing, but I don't want to risk driving a cake over Hwy 17 to get it to the party! I need something closer.

Thanks :)

Best bet Indian food in Campbell,San Jose?

Another recommendation for Rangoli. I have not been for dinner, but I have been quite a few times for the lunch buffet.

Beer or Wine as a "Life Style" Choice

I am another woman who really likes good beer and I wish beer was marketed more to us (well, other than Sam's Light - LOL). I also wish that beer was treated more seriously in nice restaurants - outside the brewery-restaurant and pub genres, good beer is sometimes hard to come by. I am in California, so we have it a bit better than in a lot of areas, but restaurants here are still seriously missing the boat.

Best Red Beans and Rice

We had some really good red beans and rice at Napoleon House last month. They were creamy, slightly smokey, and had just the right amount of spice.

Healthy Eating; Restaurant Etiquette

We end up walking so much more in New Orleans than we do at home that weight gain isn't a problem. Early morning walks on the Quarter are terrific.

French Quareter restaurant with great food that has a courtyard.

Yep - we have just returned and have a few insect bites as souveniers. We expected it for our trip through cajun country, but we didn't expect the mosquitos in New Orleans. They got us though.

NOLA in sweltering August heat-where to eat?

We just returned from New Orleans, and all our dining took place a casual places - talk about not bring a jacket? My husband didn't even bring long pants. Johnny's Po-boys was really good. We also enjoyed Napoleon House on St Louis - red beans and rice were great, as were the mufalettas and the shrimp remolaude and avacado salad. I had some Shrimp Creole at Pere Antoines on Royal and St Ann that were really tasty.

Camellia Grill........A Great Story........

Great article. Thanks for posting that. We are off to New Orleans tomorrow and guess what is on our list of places to eat :)

sam adams: is it serious beer?? which are best and which are your faves??

I enjoy Sam's too. They produce a tasty, consistent product. I like the standard Boston Lager, Old Fezziwig is a good one. The Brown Ale is nice.

Shopping for Spices, Sauces, etc.

Sounds like the Sav-A-Center is calling my name :)

Shopping for Spices, Sauces, etc.

Excellent - thanks. We have most of the restaurants you mentioned on our list, but Coops and the Coffee Pot are not, but they soon will be :)

We are planning to drive up through plantation country on our way to Breaux Bridge, and didn't have a good lunch stop suggestion yet. So that one is really helpful.

Outback Steakhouse

I've been to Outback several times and have much the same opinion - it is edible, but not something I would choose.

Maggie Moo's vs. Cold Stone

I agree - their portions are huge, and since the ice cream is so soft, it melts right away. I went there with a friend who raved about it. CSC was ok, but I'll take Baskin Robins anyday - LOL.

Shopping for Spices, Sauces, etc.

Thanks for the recommendation for the rice mill. I checked out the web site and it looks great - I think a tour of the oldest operating rice mill in the country would be really cool.

Great NYT article on German beers

The Scherlenka (sp?) rauchbier was our favorite in Germany. We actually didn't make it to Bamberg - we planned to do a day trip while based in Nuremberg, but we just never made it up there. We had the rauchbier in Nuremberg, and it was terrific.

Shopping for Spices, Sauces, etc.

Avery Island is definitely on our itinerary.

Lunch in Half Moon Bay?

Duarte's would be my choice too.

Bing Cherries from Christopher Ranch in Gilroy

Thanks for the tip. I have been wanting some good cherries. If we are down that way, I will stop in and get some. We had some cherries from a fruit stand in Watsonville last week and they were ok, but not very flavorful. Yesterday I tasted some cherries at Whole Foods in San Jose, which were pretty decent, but at $5/lb, I passed on them.

Ruth's Chris butter etiquette

Not Ruth's Chris specifically, but I have had steaks and other meats with butters on them before and it is quite good. They prompted me to try making flavored butters to top grilled meats at home - there are several recipes in my grilling cookbooks that I have tried. The beer-mustard-butter is probably the biggest hit with guests and a simple butter with some chives and parsley mixed in is terrific on pork or beef medalions.

Shopping for Spices, Sauces, etc.

Thanks for the recommendations. Neighborhood groceries, delis, and things are exactly what I am looking for, rather than the 'souvenier' hot sauces. Definitely want to cook with the stuff, and the people we will be giving things to will want to cook with them too.

Shopping for Spices, Sauces, etc.

We will be in New Orleans next month and I would like to buy some fun things like spices, hot sauces, and other things to take home to cook with or give as gifts to people - so I am looking for suggestions about where to go to buy these things.

Last time we were in New Orleans, I saw a lot of things in tourist shops in the French Quarter, but I figured that a stores not aimed at tourists would probably be the way to go.

We will be staying at a hotel in the French Quarter for several nights - have plans to head uptown one day and explore the Fauburg Marigny neighborhood another day, we will be going to Audubon Park as well. Then we will pick up a car and head up through plantation country and then over to the New Iberia area for a couple more days before heading home. So any recommendations that are convinient to our general plan would be great.

Non-Coffee Drinkers Left Out in Workplace

Since budget is not an issue, I don't think it would be unreasonable for the company to provide some nice refreshments for the non-coffee drinkers. We actually have the opposite problem in my office - we have sodas, bottle water, several flavors of sparkling mineral waters, hot chocolate, a variety of teas AND some sort of brown sludge that they try to pass off as coffee. I have mentioned that if they spent a little more and bought reasonable coffee, that we would save a lot in lost productivity because people wouldn't be running down to Starbucks all day long. But it has fallen on deaf ears.

Ok..I have to get this out in 2006..I HATE TRADER JOES

I am in California too and I haven't noticed a lot of the things people are complaining about either.

pf changs & cheesecake factory

I've been to our CF several times and been very satisfied. As others have said, it isn't haute cuisine, but it is good. I generally go with friends and we get a variety of appetizers to share and then cheesecake. I've also gotten salads there - the smaller lunch portion is good, although still pretty big. I always plan on taking something home. I've never had a long wait either, but friends in other places have reported waits as long as an hour and a half {gulp}.

I've only been to PF once, and it was fine. Definitely not authentic chinese food, but it was good.

Gordon-Biersch in Bolingbrook

Gordon Biersch is one of our standby places. Always get a good meal and the beer is really good and very consistent. We live in San Jose - California - oooooo ;)

Ice Cream "blasts," "blizzards"...which chain has the best?

I worked at a DQ when I was 15 too :) Fun job. And I am still partial to DQ Blizzards. Other places make good ones, but the soft serve at DQ is the best of any place I have tried and that is the key.
