Good (great?) Caterers in the Southern California?

If you like Korean food, Shinmi Catering offers great food at a great price. I order from them when I have large family gatherings and parties (both Koreans and non- love the food), but I've heard they are great for weddings. 213-739-1919. shinmicatering.com. They're in K-town.

desserts---what is your favorite dessert around los angeles?!

The $14 deconstructed donut at Craft. I'm sorry if that sounds ridiculous, but every part of that dessert brought out a sigh from us all. That dinner was wonderful BTW, and unlike a few of the other parts of the many course dinner which were too salty, this dessert was perfect--amazing chocolate (I forget which imported one it was), custard, fruit "jelly," and some mix of savory and tart in the donut dough (was it lemon-thyme?). Sorry, I forgot the details, it was about a year ago, but oh, the memory of a fabulous meal topped off by a scrumptious dessert still lingers...

Great sushi in SF valley, a la Northridge, Chatsworth etc.?!

Yikes, our bday lunch has turned to dinner, and when I called, Kiwami's booked until next month anyway...and omakase there range closer to $100pp nowadays...

However, I've decided to go there anyway for just dinner b/c now I'm curious and hungry. If the service, decor, and sushi are as great as everyone is saying, we will definitely make another reservation for a future date w/the master chef.

Great sushi in SF valley, a la Northridge, Chatsworth etc.?!

Thanks all! I think we're going to try Kiwami, since that's the one that sounds most like it'll fit price point and decor not to mention taste. The others we'll definitely try another time since we're up there a lot visiting fam.
Thx again.

Great sushi in SF valley, a la Northridge, Chatsworth etc.?!

Hey all,
I'm looking for suggestions for a great sushi place for lunch in the SF valley.

We usually go to places just for the food (i.e., regardless of how much they spent on decor, as long as it's delicious), but I'll be taking my partner to a birthday lunch, so decor counts too this time. We'll be in the Northridge area, but fine w/driving further out (e.g., Encino? Woodland Hills? Studio City?). Unfortunately, money's tight w/us too, so am looking at $50-60pp range.

Saw the 8/12/09 discussion, but wasn't sure which of those suggested (e.g., Ichiban Kan, Taka, Matsuda, Midori, Iwata, Iki, Hirosuke, Katsu-Ya, Kushiyu, Go's Mart, Sushi Spot) would be suitable for a celebration, as opposed to more casual dining, esp. bc a lot of the places listed don't seem to have working websites and/or photos to check out.

Thanks a lot! Y'all are always a big help.

Need rehearsal dinner location for 100-125 people near West Hollywood

is k-town close enough to west holly? yong susan restaurant on vermont n of olympic has great korean food, decor, and service, and their whole restaurant is filled w/rooms of various sizes for catered events. i heard they have a room that accomodates 100 ppl upstairs where ppl have even done wedding receptions...http://www.yongsusan.co.kr/en/menu-1/menu4.htm

Cooking and cake decorating kids classes

My 7 yr old kid just took a class at chef eric's on the westside (http://culinaryclassroom.com). They have different classes by age. The menus are sophisticated enough that we parents loved the food too (we got to taste all their hard work at the end of ea class). Up side: well run, experience in real professional kitchen set up. Down side: didn't get to do too much that we don't have her do already at home, so not sure how much she learned.

Any good Waikiki eats?

Thx Clinton! Ur right, yuck to those chains; if I'm going to clog my arteries, at least it should taste good! ;)

Anything I should make sure to order at Rainbow Dr In, Ono's, or Sekiya's?

Any good Waikiki eats?

I'm traveling there in a few weeks for job interview. Am poor student now who appreciates good food. Not picky about decor, type of cuisine etc., just have to be good and close to place I'm staying at (Kapahulu Avenue and Kalakaua Ave) or easy to get to by mass transit b/c won't have car.

Thx for any suggestions.

Meals by Genet-Another Option?

Personally, I wasn't too impressed w/Meals when I went a few years back, but ppl who are looking for more middle class ambience seem to rave about it; about the same for Nyala, both of which I've tried once. We love Merkato across the street, the one with the Ethiopian store attached to it. Doro Wat very tasty there, although not too much chicken involved. Also tasty is the whole fish dish (yum yum), and the Asa Tibbs, although we've only eaten it fully cooked.

Happy hour in mid wilshire for 2 intellectuals?

Tanks! We'll try it.

Happy hour in mid wilshire for 2 intellectuals?

Hey,
Maybe that's a better title?

Somewhere bet. UCLA/westside and downtown, tonight, 2 friends who want to catch up and hang out in a setting that 2 intellectuals and foodies would consider fun.

Thanks!

P.S. And although I'd love to give back to the board more, 2 young uns, still student status, and lack of funds have me out of the food tasting loop for the most part.

Cafe Tropical on Sunset

We used to live a few blocks away from there in the mid/ate 90s (gawd has it been that long?!), and used to be a favorite haunt. Not many Cuban men hanging around there then, but definitely yes to 12 step group mtgs when it's crowded.

Just laid back, w/solid & consistent food & drink. No pretension, hole in the wall; it's the food. Gotta give another nod to the Cuban sandwiches, juices, and pasteries in general there. Extra pickles on the sandwich, one of my favorite quick meals. Yum, I'm salivating right now.

PAKISTANI IN CHATSWORTH!!!

thanks so much for the tip! we're over there a lot to visit relatives, and are always looking for great food. i esp miss india/pakistani food b/c i had it every week in nyc before co***g here, where i've yet to find a consistent place(s) to go for it.

if you can recommend some on the westside...

Family eateries in Santa Monica this Sunday?

Yeah, been to fritto misto once, so i had thought of it. good, clean, tasty pastas that you can do up yourself. very sparse furnishings, though (those basic wooden chairs and square tables) will probably not be comfortable enough for most of our party.

totally good for a bunch of middle range age friends though (say teenage to 30s?), so I should definitely make a trip back there soon.
thx.

Family eateries in Santa Monica this Sunday?

I'll look them up, thx. I've only been to Il Fornaio before, so I'm kinda guessing the other suggestions will be like that--maybe even a little too "nice" for our crowd?! To be honest, our extendeds usually feel fine at a chain like macaroni grill or even olive garden, so, even though I love em, the extra cost, ambience, and flavor is probably wasted on em.

Family eateries in Santa Monica this Sunday?

Any suggestions for places to bring extended family for late lunch/early dinner this Sunday?

We're going to be near SaMo High (6th & Pico) and will have both kids under 10 and grandparents w/mobility issues, with folks in between, So we'll need somewhere near, comfortable, and able to feed/deal with kids. Plus, we've got health issues to deal w/too, so healthy options are a bonus.

Obviously, yummy would be good, but to be honest, b/c of these other restrictions, I'll take anything I can get. (Am I being a disloyal chowhound?!)

Thanks a lot.

Healthy food near JA National Museum for Mother's Day?

Can u give me some suggestions? We're going to the Asian American Book Festival there tomorrow (Sat), so will want to eat lunch and/or dinner in the surrounding area. We'll have under 10 yrs old kids and ppl w/health issues, so it's got to be healthy. Plus, we'll have a couple of moms too, so I'd rather like a nice (i.e., not dive), comfy place. And of course kick ass food!

Thx for any help w/this.

Healthy eats in Hollywood

Thx for all the great suggestions! I didn't check the latter posts in time for that day, but I'll definitely check out the Chinese and Mexican places next time we're there.

FYI: Although Zen Zoo looked fun, hard wooden chairs, a long steep staircase to the 2nd floor and way heavy patchouli was a no go for a 6 mos. pregnant woman. We ended up at the Japanese (I think chain) next door, totally forgettable.

Healthy eats in Hollywood

Thx for the tip!
