Pizza: let's try for description rather than rage

If you don't mind a really small place then I think that Bistro Italiano has a pretty good offering. Super thin crust and generally pretty greasy---their sauce is to die for. Don't know what they put it in but it is awesome. On Capitol Hill---you can find them on google but they don't have a website.

ALSO---a little birdie told me that Matchbox is thinking of opening a location next door to Jordans 8 but I have no confirmation on this...only rumor

I don't think Irene's will take a reservation unless you have a really big party but they have a waiting area with cocktail OR you can walk around the neighborhood a bit. Ursuline Convent is always cool to go and check out.

Need rec's for July visit

Irene's Cuisine in the quarter is great, Jacques-Imos Cafe uptown is a MUST!!!

Tommy's Cuisine

Is that for Tommy's or Dick and Jenny's? I am really torn on this one as I have been to Dick and Jenny's once before and loved it but have never done Tommy's. LOVE Irene's though...would just go there except I want to stay more uptownish.

I agree about Nola...wasn't goign to say anything since you already have reservations but now that it is out there...

If you are going to spend that amount of money you can definitely go to better places. Also, bear in mind that Emeril's food is VERY rich. Last time I went what I ordered was good but I could barely have more than two or three bites and I am not a shy eater. Go to Irene's on Ursuline or Antoine's and eat some Oyster's Rockafeller. Both are in the quarter...

OH--and Croissant D'Or on Ursuline for breakfast pastries...ridiculously good

Mother's on Poydras is a great breakfast or lunch choice if you want to keep it cheap. It is a cafeteria style place and there is always a line but it moves quickly. Ferdi Special and crawfish etouffee can't be beat.

Clover Grill and Port of Call are great burgers down in the quarter (again VERY casual).

Napoleon House is a good place to stop and grab a bite in the quarter and Muriel's is fabulous too although maybe a bit pricey.

Tommy's Cuisine

Is Tommy's Cuisine a good pick for a large group? I have never eaten there. I was leaning towards Dick and Jenny's but with no reservations I worry about getting 9 ppl seated...

Brasserie Les Halles?

It was definitely jazzy...it was ziti with gruyere, proscuitto, and what tasted like some nutmeg mixed in. Very interesting flavor although REALLY rich and a huge serving. I would suggest sharing. If you are a mac and cheese fiend I would highly recommend Zola's Lobster mac and cheese...it is phenomenal

Another solo dining question

If you want to stay in the Capitol Hill area there is Belga Cafe (great little patio) and Old Siam (also a good patio and delicious Thai food) that are both on 8th.

Montmarte is on 7th next to Eastern Market...French bistro, very cute.

A fabulous solo dining atmosphere is Two Quail on Senate side. The food is only so-so but the atmosphere is killer. Small, quiet tables, Billy Holiday type music...

Jordans 8

Thanks for the info!! (I am clearly pretty excited for this place to open up) I don't think it will help your lunch issue though. What I read is that it will be steak downstairs and sushi upstairs so I doubt it will be inexpensive. My guess would be that he is probably going to try to draw in some of the Belga Cafe type crowd (it is the same guy who owns Tapatinis).

Brasserie Les Halles?

Thanks for all the advice. I went with two friends on friday evening and have mixed reviews. I thought the service was great but I do not like overly attentive servers as it tends to make me feel rushed so it may be a matter of taste. We had the escargot to start and they were not very good, they were too big, a bit rubbery, not well prepared (found antennae on one), and really quite bland. I didn't think you could mess up the seasonings on these but apparently you can. All of our entrees were yummy though. My tartare was good and prepared exactly as I wanted. My other two dining companions had the quiche and the macaroni and cheese and both were lovely. Profiteroles for dessert which were good as well. All in all I would give them a solid B. Great patio and would definitely go again but nothing to write home about. Thanks again for all help!

Is the Brasserie Les Halles downtown any good? I am looking for basic French Bistro food for an early dinner Saturday night and their menu looked appropriate...

Eating New Orleans dry...

Port o Call is definitely not uptown...just one that I thought I'd throw in there. It is on the far end of the french quarter. If you walk down Bourbon street to the very end you run into it.

Birthday Dinner in Nola

Would love some help on a good uptown or garden district place for birthday dinner in a couple of weeks. I am doing Antoine's one night so I want something a little different the other night. Was thinking along the lines of Dick and Jenny's, Clancy's, Crepe, Brigtsen's?? I haven't been to New Olreans in about a year and am not sure what my best bet will be! Would love any suggestions!

French Quareter restaurant with great food that has a courtyard.

Brennan's and Broussards both have courtyards...

Eating New Orleans dry...

You need to get uptown! There are tons of restaurants hidden in every little neighborhood in the city and uptown/garden district seems like your next best bet. Commanders Palace, Jacques-Imos, Dick and Jenny's, Crepe Nanou, Upperline, Brigtsen's, Casamento's, Lillette...oh and go to Port of Call for a burger over on Esplanade...

BLT STEAK

I went a couple of months ago and I will say that my filet was the best I have ever had but the service and atmosphere was ATROCIOUS. I have never had a meal that expensive in such uncomfortable surroundings. Bright, harsh light, over croweded, loud music...not worth it!

Crawfish

If you want to find some good recipes for Crawfish Monica get on the Times Picayune website. They have an index of recipes for folks who lost all their cookbooks in Katrina.

For good crawfish in DC I am not sure it is possible. Every year I have friends who have tried to get some good live ones flown up and it never really works well. The only time I have ever had great crawfish is at the Loyola Alumni crawfish boil and they do that every year (already past this year, I believe though).

3-day b-day weekend help

OKAY...so, I lived in nola for college and go back about twice a year, even post katrina but I know the culinary world is always changing and I wanted some suggestions for best bets for a 3 day weekend in town. I am going to Antoine's for the big b-day dinner (I know, I know but it's my place and I love it) but I need another restaurant for Friday night. I am thinking August, Cochon, Brigstens? Any thoughts? I have done so many restaurants that is is tempting to return to a place I love but I figure I should branch out. Also, going to Drago's for lunch friday (so glad they are open again) but wasn't sure about a good Sat. place? I love Mother's but don't know if I need to eat all that before dinner at Antoines. Any help would be much appreciated!
