What about the bar at Hungry Mother?

Downtown Providence?

Thanks so much for all of the recs. I think that Haven Bros is going to be too casual for this group (but I am bookmarking it for later), but I like the idea of the Red Fez or bar at 121. Thanks for the thoughts on where NOT to go as well. Cuban Revolution was actually on my list of curiosities.

Downtown Providence (casual dinner recommendations)

I'm headed to Providence for the weekend and am staying downtown. Any recs for a casual late dinner tonight (for me and 3 others) when I get into town?

Big Night Out: 14 People on a Saturday Night

Rocca, Grill 23, and Eastern Standard are great for large groups. Obviously, it might make sense to call ahead and see who can accommodate you. The newly opened Post 390 (Stuart and Clarendon) looks good, with a menu that I'd liken to Eastern Standard.

Chia Seeds in Boston (or Cambridge)

Does anyone know of a place where I can buy chia seeds (not for a chia pet but for eating!) in Boston or Cambridge? I'm thinking maybe the Harvest Co-op in Central Square might have them, but I'd love to know of places where people have actually purchased them. Thanks!

Best Mac & Cheese

Coda has great mac n cheese. As does Stephanie's on Newbury (I'm not a fan of the place, in general, but the mnc is good).

Empanada Dough

I'm looking to make some empanadas this weekend but wasn't too psyched about making my own dough. Does anyone know of any specialty grocery stores in the Boston area (I'm in the city but have a car and can travel) that sell this? Apologies if this topic has been discussed here before-- I searched the boards and only got posts from NYC, which didn't really help my cause!

What places consistently live up to the hype?

I'll second you on Chacarero, Blumie. It's always consistent, cheap, and amazing.

Tremont 647 is another good spot. Been many times. Never disappointed.

On the other end of the spectrum for me is Sorellina. I've never gone wrong there and have always felt good about the quality, portions, service, and price. It's a top-notch dining experience.

Contrarian views on "popular" restaurants?

I ate at Grill 23 last month and was extremely disappointed. I ordered my steak medium rare, and it arrived well done. Yes, I sent it back (and the manager came to our table and apologized), but by the time it arrived, the rest of my table was at least 1/2 way through with their respective pieces of meat. The sides were lacking as well. The "creamed" spinach appeared to be steamed leaf spinach with some milk poured on top of it (not even chopped). The potatoes were cold.
I'd really expected a lot more from what's billed by many as the best local steak place.

Fashionable Lunch Saturday Newbury St

I'd vote for Piattini or Bouchee but generally agree that Newbury, while full of eye candy is a dearth of food options. I'd seriously advise against Sonsie. My last 2 visits (there will be no more) were terrible. The produce was dull, and the service was inattentive and just all-around terrible.

Evoo or whathaveyou?

Evoo is good, but I agree with the comments on the noise. Central Kitchen is a fun place, but it's next to impossible to get in on a Saturday night. I've waited over an hour (on more than one occasion) when I had "reservations." I was with a group, so we just had drinks at the Enormous Room, and it wasn't a big deal. I prefer Rendezvous for a dinner for 2.

Sit-down Lunch Near South Station

Thanks for all the suggestions! We ended up at the Good Life, and it was perfect. Dad had a burger with a fried egg on top, Mom had a salad, and I had the turkey sandwich. Great fries all around oo.

Sit-down Lunch Near South Station

Looking for a good place for lunch that is near South Station to take a couple of unadventurous palates (family in town). Any suggestions??
