Clubhouse BFD sports bar restaurant at M59&Crooks in Rochester Hills (DTW)
liked red coat my first time there. second time, eh, not so much. they don't s&p their burger, which is a big no-no in my book.
DTW - Cheng's, Rochester Hills
that definitely sounds tempting. basically fresh made to order dim sum on the weekends? i'll definitely have to make a trip there!
saugatuck
any recommendations? going there in 2 weeks or so....old thread was the midwest forum from 2009, so I figure its time for a new one...
thanks ahead of time!
Looking for restaurant recs in Detroit
just went to coach tonight. would not go back. had to send my pasta back twice and still wasn't done right the third time.
Prepared Food at Farmers Markets [DTW & metro]
this is the exact reason that i don't even goto ROFM. I live within walking distance, was never that impressed with prices or goods (collusion at its finest). I went a few times last july/august. Could never find heirloom tomatoes. I gave up.
The whole point of farmers markets is that they are supposed to have either
1. Cheaper produce due to lack of middlemen
2. More varied/rare produce due to smaller batches giving farmers flexibility.
3. Better produce because of the care that smaller farms can give to their goods
I wish I had more time exploring the eastern market area. People keep bringing up great artisanal shops, and I know nothing about the area. Anyone want to organize a trip and I'd love to tag along and discover some hidden gems.
Komodo Kitchen - Indonesian - DTW
i agree with all of the above...30-35 without beverages is probably the sweet spot for an occasional weekly splurge. 60+ you better impress me with more than 3 courses. I want variety for that amount, not quantity. Its more of a tasting than a meal.
DTW - Crispelli's, Berkley
probably does...there's no other detroit foodie website, hell there's barely any bloggers
One Eyed Betty's Ferndale (DTW)
been here twice in a week or so. first time got the gumbo and onion rings. grossly oversalted. second time a pork belly sandwich with pickled carrots, onions, 'asian mayo' and some fries. The pork is delicious, however it needs more acid. The bun was overly greasy + the sloppy mayo + pork belly was just too much. I surmise if there was cilantro or jalopenos or a squeeze of lime, it'd perk up much more. Also the breading on the onion rings tend to be of the thick type, and 1/2 of my friends rings were inedible due to the raw fried batter that was stuck to it.
though overall, a great addition to the area. i don't know if there's anywhere else like it. I would definitely like to see more rare things on the cheese + charcuterie plate. Cottswold, cheddar, and some kind of blue just doesn't get me excited.
DTW Lanna Thai Cuisine - Shelby Township - Northern Thai?
Whoa, willing to put it up there with LA spots? I'm there!
DTW - Oakland County recs for out of towners
royal oak? i'd go with cafe muse...i don't trust any latin place up here, especially in downtown RO.
No trip down to dearborn for middle eastern food? or mexican town for latin food?
Troy Restaurant Week just started $35 for 3-courses @top flight chains [DTW]
six upscale chains with steak and potatoes kinda menu...not impressed
DTW - Crispelli's, Berkley
i freakin liked it a lot...got a pizza marghertia, nice char on the crust, lacking a bit of chew though. Decent tomato sauce with fresh and low moisture mozarella. No sogginess at all.
One Eyed Betty's Ferndale (DTW)
i had awful bastones fries once...and awful pizza, and awful 'bernaise'. i've written it off. maybe i should step in one more time to try the fries?
The *other side* of the Food Truck argument... [DTW]
its all about the food...could care less about buildings, taxes, fees, and red tape. if your restaurant has served the same crap for 30 years and all your customers have died off and you can't compete with a more exciting new product next door, then don't complain. I don't understand this detroit food scene with all these people raging about nostalgia...as an outside, i can't taste nostalgia.
I'd go with the more innovative, creative, and delicious menu any day of the week.
U-10 dry pack scallops [dtw]
best product/price i've seen is vince and joes on garfield...$17/lb...dry pack
worked well when i cooked it, barely any liquid came out.
also in addition, only place in dtw that i've seen skate wing sold (3 bucks a lb)...as far as i'm concerned, best seafood counter i've seen so far. Not as big of a selection as the megastores, but a good young fishmonger with the balls to carry some of these items > megastores such as holiday market and whole foods
DTW - where to get deep fried pickles
Black lotus has spears...
So nobody in dtw has chips?
Best of Detroit report in Real Detroit Weekly your thoughts? LINK
these lists often points to the to avoid list....or if the voters are non-foodies who don't know any better
DTW Lanna Thai Cuisine - Shelby Township - Northern Thai?
the northern thai place i went to in LA had a pepper paste/accompaniment to eat along with sticky rice....anything like that?
truffle oil/salt [dtw]
I gave up and bought a jar on amazon...12 bucks for truffle salt.
U-10 dry pack scallops [dtw]
been to costco, superior fish, asian shops in madison hts. nobody has dry pack scallops. any clues? and any ideas who'd be the cheapest? looking for U-10 to U-15 sized ones...any bigger and they get tough
truffle oil/salt [dtw]
do you think a local italian place would have better turnover/selection than a larger higher end store such as holiday market, papa joes, etc? it eventually gets to the importance of freshness/potency/flavor...and i feel like truffles would be something with a limited shelf-life. I've never bought truffle salt myself and only been given truffle oil as a gift. The oil wasn't all that flavorful to start and didn't last long...
truffle oil/salt [dtw]
i'm trying to make some mushroom riosotto...trying to put some truffle flavor into it...
1. what truffle product should i choose?
2. where to get it in the dtw area?
if no consensus is reached, then i might jsut go truffle-less :P
DTW: Sugar House
The prices were not astronomically high...6-10 for stuff on their cocktail menu....that's more than competitive with other places in town...
DTW: Sugar House
Best bar in dtw. Housemade everything, rare aperitifs, top notch ingredients, no tvs, no annoying waitresses upselling that artichoke dip. Just about the company and the drinks. Only downside,or upside,is the constantly changing menu...
Lellis [dtw]
I jumped :(
Hope I'm not disappointed. You can split the chateaubriand and some other stuff and come out ok...it's not lie I want to overeat. The decent dining choices with innovative menus I want to eat at in the area is pretty abysmal.
Lellis [dtw]
Anyone been? there's a groupon for 35 for 70. Stuff seems really overpriced. Is it actually decent food? menu looks overwhelmingly generic steak-house minus the chateaubriand, tagliatelle (probably not freshly made), and maybe the liver. In addition they do offer escargot and gnocchi (though in an alfredo sauce?)
Anyone think its even worth the 35 and the drive up to auburn hills?
