Remi Martin Louis XIII Cognac

I understand the "bucket list" aspect, but I've got to say....
Through a lucky happenstance, I ended up with a bottle of Louis XIII a few years ago, and over the course of a weekend, shared most of it with my wife and mother. While it was very, very good, there is now way it's worth $200/glass. And this from some one happy to pay well over $100/bottle for wines.

Good place to buy scotch in the east bay ?

Thanks for the responses,
I'll check out Ledgers, it sounds like what I'm after.
I agree that both BevMo and Costco carry a good selection at a good price, but I'm after more rare and unusual bottles that Costco doesn't carry and BevMo only carries in seemingly random short supply.

Good place to buy scotch in the east bay ?

I'm looking for a place along the lines of Beltramos or K&L in the east bay. Somewhere with a good selection of unusual single malts and a knowledgeable staff. Preferably towards Hayward/Oakland area.

Palm brown sugar

99Ranch carries several types of palm sugar

Redwood Shores

I would not recommend that you drive into the city (SF). Driving and parking in the city is hassle enough for locals who know where they're going. From Redwood Shores you can easily take caltrain from the Belmont station or BART from the Milbrae station.

As for good seafood on the peninsula, I haven't been there in quite a while, but Sushi Sam's in San Mateo was usually a good bet, if I couldn't make it to the city.

Dinner near Sonoma Mission Inn ?

It was quite good. The service was impeccable and the food very well prepared. While the menu was not as exciting as it could have been (very standard fare), it was still well worth it. An excellent traditional, formal dining experience.
The meal I enjoyed most that weekend, however, was La Salette. Much less formal, but a more interesting menu, and just as well prepared food.

Hayward Recommendation, please

my favorite restaurant in the area is Favorite Indian.
Perhaps the best Indian in the east bay.

Spanish churros and chocolate

I'm on a quest to find churros and chocolate like I loved in Madrid.
The churros should not too sweet, and the hot chocolate should be thick and rich.
I would prefer some place in the east bay.

Thanks

Tasso in East Bay north of Oakland?

I've bought tasso at Taylors Sausage in the Oakland housewives market.

Dinner near Sonoma Mission Inn ?

Thanks every one for your suggestions.
I made a reservation for Sante.
That way I can drink like a fish, eat like a king, and stumble back to my room that night.
I hope to try El Molino Central and La Salette for other meals while I'm up there.

Dinner near Sonoma Mission Inn ?

I'll be celebrating a landmark birthday ( no one needs to know which) by spa-ing at the Sonoma Mission Inn.
I'm looking for a nice restaraunt for dinner that evening and have been thinking of The Girl & The Fig or Santé, niether of wich I've been to.

Any thoughts ?
I don't want to drive very far, or prefereably I'd like to walk.

need reccs on good meet up place for 10-20, not a sit down(restaurant with large bar, small plates, gastro pub)

I second Thirsty Bear.
Good food and beer, and I have reserved the upstairs for groups. It's quieter when they have a DJ and there's a pool table.

Best burritos in South Bay?

There is a website by Sushi Monster of all the taquerias in Redwood City. An excellent resource:

Chinese Banquet near San Leandro

I am looking for a good Chinese Restaurant for a banquet style dinner for 20 to 30 people in a couple of weeks. It needs to be close to San Leandro.
None of us speak Chinese, so someplace were the banquet menu is available in English would be ideal.
We have considered Daimo (but the one in San Leandro is not our favorite)
We are currently leaning towards Chili Palace, but we can't read their banquet menu and would have to order off the regular English menu (not a bad thing, but not ideal).

Any thoughts ?

Best sausages?

Don't know if it's too far for you, but the very best sausages (multiple award winning) are at Schaub's meats in the Stanford shopping center.
They usually have around 15 to 20 varieties. The Thai chicken and the spicy mango chicken are my favorites.

I have also gone to their warehouse in Hayward and purchased direct from there at a substantial discount from their regular prices:

Help on Jamon Iberico

One way to be sure what you have purchased is "real" Jamon Iberico, is to ask the retailer who the exporter and importer of the product was.
According to Wikipedia (an infallible source of info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamon_iberico), there is only one importer and one exporter of the product.

By the way, I have read that there is pending legislation to require importers to cut off the identifying black hoof for "sanitary reasons".

Bulk Chocolate?

Ghiradelli's in San Leandro only has the wrapped stuff they sell in retail outlets, no bulk. I've bought some good quality bulk chocolate at the Pasta Shop in Berkeley (not the one at the Rockridge mall). It's at:

1786 4th Street
Berkeley, CA 94070

Craving Morning Glory

I buy On Choy all the time at 99 Ranch. It's very easy to cook and quite inexpensive.
Just stir fry with some garlic, dried chili, and a little fish sauce.

Looking for a Thursday Lunch Recommendation - Civic Center/Union Square-ish?

The new Hubert Keller Burger Bar just opened today, I think.
It's on Union Square at 251 Geary.
While you can get crazy and spend big $ on extras like truffles, kobe beef and such, the basic burgers are pretty reasonable.

Trying to find SF or East Bay coffee shop or cafe with comfortable seating

I like a place in San Leandro called Zocalo
They're located at:
645 Bancroft Ave San Leandro, CA 94577
They're a local independent coffee shop. They have quit a bit of well used, comfy living room furniture (couches, armchairs, etc..), free wifi, etc....
You can check them out here:

Caspers Classic "Casper Dog" 75¢ today

After reading about Caspers 75th anniversary in the Chron this morning, I looked at their website and saw a notice that the Caspers Classic Dog will be 75 cents today only.

Prime Ribeye Steaks at Costco $8.99/lb

The Danville/San Ramon store had them last wednesday (and seem to always have some).

ISO Source for Bulk Unsweetened Valrhona or Callebaut Cocoa Powder

They are generally pretty good, a tad high, perhaps, but not exorbitant.

1 Day Cooking Classes in Istanbul ?

Hi All,

I just got our tickets for Istanbul for April next year, and I'm starting to think of where to stay, and of course what to eat. I've read of several hotels that offer cooking classes, and several cooking schools in Istanbul.
Can any one make a recommendation ? We were looking for something that would keep us well entertained, well fed, and leave us with a few recipes to bring home.

Local fresh ravioli

I would first like to second the suggestion for the Pasta Shop (not the frozen stuff) at Rockridge.
I would also recommend Genova's Deli in the Temescal area of Oakland. You can find thier stuff in the frozen section of many area grocerers, but going to the source and getting fresh is always best.

REALLY spicy food in the Bay Area?

I would also suggest Vientiane for something unusual.
It's "downhome" Laotian food. I've made the mistake of ordering the Lao style green papaya salad and asked for it spicy, and it was near inedible for me.

Here's an old chowhound thread on the place:

What to eat at Great American Music and Food festival at Shoreline Sat?

After I got home from this fiasco, I sent an email to the "contact us" address at their website.
I received a very prompt reply from an agent at "The Agency Group Events":

"Thank you so much for taking the time to write. I am so incredibly sorry about what you went through.

We certainly had every intention of making everything perfect. The fact is, the problems were not anyone's fault by ours. Not the building’s, not Live Nation. We wanted to keep lines down so we invested all this money (upfront...not too smart) for the "cashless system" that would do just that… according to the company that was running it. This company had a resume that included NASCAR races (200,000 +) so when we heard that every transaction could be made in 3-seconds or less, we were in. We had them come in a week early and start testing...making sure everything worked...then as we opened the doors, the system failed.

The Fest did have an emergency system in place and cash banks and credit card machines were distributed prior to the show, but it took us nearly 45-minutes to switch over and by that point, we had very large lines. Added to that, it was our first year and we had no way to really judge attendance. We looked at "pre-sales" and doubled them thinking that was safe...and we would be over. We were wrong...and very sorry.

It is important to us as producers for you to understand that we do care and put years of hard work into this just to have one company take us down.

Please let me know if there is anything we can do to make this up to you…this year.

Again, we are all so sorry this happened...but at the same time are not giving up. We will come back next year on our tour and will have something special for those who were put out this year.

Thank you again for writing.

Jim"

My own feeling is that the failures experienced there had very little to do with the technology breakdowns, and everything to do with extremely poor planning and no crowd management or communication.
