Sumac?

Awww, man. I was out in Metry this morning and forgot to stop by. I'll have to make another trip (on a non-parade day).

Thanks for the confirmation, though!

Sumac?

Excellent. Thanks!

Sumac?

Any sources for sumac in the greater New orleans area? Seems like a "hot" spice at the moment, and I want to try a few recipes I've seen.

Tamarind

Went a couple of weeks ago, and to be honest, found it quite boring. Really more French than anticipated, and the pan-Asian twist on standard French things just seemed tired. It wasn't a bad experience-- I just can't remember anything I had beyond the salted plum cocktail.

Tully's Pizza

As a Chicago transplant myself, I would give your deep dish a shot if you sold it.

Tully's Pizza

What, exactly, are your standards for "real" pizza? I guess I'm wondering what this place has that Crescent Pie, Pizza Delicious, Domenica, Lazaro's, etc., don't have.

Just FYI, the Eiffel Society website has been updated.

What's wrong with Rouses?

Orchid fried rice @ Pho Orchid

Yeah, their pho isn't great. I like their bun, though. It's a nice change-up.

pigs feet

Rouse's has had them in the past. Haven't checked in a while though.

Recs for places walking distance from Tulane

About those 4 years... You never know. I'm starting my 7th year (law school), and my sister still has 2 more of undergrad, so my parents got at least 8. Probably more.

Looking for white sangria

Cafe Granada has white sangria. Pretty good, and the food is excellent, too.

Sukhothai Uptown

I still haven't found decent Thai here, and this place hasn't changed that. Curries are one-note and uninteresting, vegetables are cut in those silly shapes and taste like they were frozen. Boring.

Best Banh Mi?

Just go to Dong Phuong. I promise you won't regret it.

Banana Blossom Thai Cafe

Yes. Don't waste your time. All the flavors were way out of balance, and tended way too far toward the sweet end. I'm not sure there was anything we ate there that would be worth eating again. Also, while amuses and their dessert equivalents are nice touches, they are not necessary, and there is no reason to feel so compelled to put one out. The complimentary house salad we received was iceberg lettuce, carrot, and red onion with some sort of gloopy, sickly-sweet dressing. Not even remotely Thai, and more importantly, not good at all. The dessert was a "coconut" gelee. Over-gelatinized to the point of being hard to swallow, and terrible tasting. Free stuff is less appreciated if it's gross.

Spicy - Hot Food

Get a curry from Bangkok Thai and ask for it "Thai hot." That'll do it pretty good.

Bread Bakeries!?

I don't know if this is still true, but St. James Cheese used to carry Wildflour breads. Might be worth a look.

One, I think it's beyond ridiculous to say that you should bow down to the server's advice on what "Americans" like. Many times, they're just surprised that you're adventurous, because most Americans who come in stick to a limited few choices, and

Two, I'm surprised she wouldn't let you after you put up a fight. I've never been denied outright, just purposefully dissuaded.

Need help with Vietnamese Restaurant

Tan Dinh, in Gretna. You were a letter off. Good restaurant, but I prefer Nine Roses, which is also in Gretna.

Gojuchang at Hong Kong Mkt?

They had it. For anyone else wondering, it's in the aisle with a small amount of Japanese and Korean products/ spices (shichimi togarashi, kochukaru, etc.).

And what is this Korean market you speak of?

Gojuchang at Hong Kong Mkt?

Does anyone know if Hong Kong Market has the Korean chile paste Gojuchang (alt. sp. Kojuchang, I believe)?

Thanks.

Venison?

I believe they sell it packaged at Whole Foods, and Stella! had a venison dish last time I was there, but I'm not sure that's still true.

New Snowball Place on Freret- serves Real Fruit Juice

I respect taking the criticism head-on. I'll have to give it a second chance.

New Snowball Place on Freret- serves Real Fruit Juice

I believe the OP was referring to Beaucoup Nola. Not sure if it's open yet in its permanent space, but they had a stand at the last Freret Market. If I'm being honest, both my girlfriend's and my own snowball were terrible, almost flavorless, so maybe there is something to be said for "fake" juice.

Huevos

You will be able to. They're in the process of opening Crescent City Pie & Sausage next door.

Restaurant Recs for current CIA student. Learning experience preferred.

I agree with that. You're not going to get any valuable kitchen experience by watching one service. You'll pick up what you need to know quickly once you begin working. The important thing is to broaden your palate, and get ideas. I second Tan Dinh or Nine Roses on the Westbank, or Kim Anh's for pho in Harahan.

Also, try the classic New Orleans dishes like gumbo and red beans, etc. Someone else is going to have to help you out with recs for those, because I don't usually eat them at restaurants. However, you should probably check out Cochon, too. Good food at good prices, with a local flavor you're not going to get elsewhere.

Try Boswell, too. He'd almost certainly be up for it, and Stella! is a very creative kitchen. Good atmosphere to work in.

Chill Out Cafe - Any Reviews or Comments?

The curry is good. For what it's worth, I haven't had better Thai in New Orleans.

Never been to Algiers or the West Bank

Vietnamese. There are a million and one of them on the West Bank, and many of them are very good.
