Mothership's Profile

Paula Peck's Cookbooks.

As of right now, there are 34 copies on amazon ranging from $.50 to $80. Ive had both of these books for ages but haven't thought of them for a long time. Looks like I'll have to revisit the baking book. :)

Thanksgiving 2011 Disaster Stories

You know, Actually I think you might be right. Luckily, he's a very nice young man. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving 2011 Disaster Stories

My daughter was making some desserts at her boyfriend's parents house earlier this evening. First thing she's ever baked for his family. She made a big tray of the Fat Witch blondie recipe blondies and a tray of lemon bars. Soooo, her boyfriend is injecting their turkey (???) with some spicy juicy stuff (again ???). He was doing this right next to her completed and cooling desserts. Somehow he slipped and splattered the bowl of turkey goo all over her desserts. Apparently all they could salvage was a few of the brownies. He feels bad of course and she's pretty disappointed. She retreated to their couch to study for her LSAT test coming up and doesn't want to talk about the incident at all...
This is her first Thanksgiving disaster. Yes, she is still speaking to him :)

Hi, my name is _______ and I'm addicted to ________ .(food only please!)

My name is Mothership and I am addicted to edamame - hot and steamy and sprinkled with salt. I could pick away at a bowl of it all day long.

Trader Joe's in Naples opening?

When I contacted Trader Joe's customer service, immediately after the first mention of it on the local news here (back whenever that was), I was told that they were hoping to open "before the end of the year". But of course, things never seem happen as quickly as is "hoped". My fingers are crossed that they meet their goals. :)

Meals/snacks for a grieving family

When a friend of ours lost his daughter, we had to quickly get something together for later that very evening. With so little prep time, and I might get pooh-poohed for this, but we picked up a honey-baked ham, one of their little sliced turkey breasts, rye bread, mustard, mayo, Swiss cheese and lettuce along with potato salad and macaroni salad. Paper plates, napkins, and plastic cutlery too. By late afternoon, so many family members and others were coming by - it worked out nicely because everyone could make themselves a sandwich as desired. Others brought cookies, crudités, stuffed eggs, chicken, fruit platters and so forth.

Condolences - it is somehow so extra hard to lose someone so young.

trouble editing posts using iPhone (anyone) but me?

Just tried to edit a post and got the message "something has gone wrong. Please refresh and try again." I did and still no luck.

Wolf range-- griddle, grill, or none of the above?

I have 6 burners and the griddle. I use it all the time - searing meats, pancakes only occasionally, but I also use it to sear scallops, throw on some asparagus or other veg with just a little olive oil etc etc. The griddle can get some good heat going. Cleanup is a snap. When I grill, I always grill outside.

trader joes in SWFL

I'm thrilled. Usually I drive back and forth to New York about every other month and there are always bags from Trader Joes in the back of my suburban. As I look around my kitchen, there is a bag of their Lemon Heart Cookies, a box of their dried green beans , a bag of their butter almond thins and a box of their dark chocolate and pistacio nut covered English toffee (um, yum). The brown rice medley is good and I am crazy for their harvest grain blend. They have a great selection of grains, rices, flours and so forth, at much better prices than Whole Foods or Adas.
As you can tell by my rambling, yes, I will be there on opening day.

"Fried Chicken and Champagne" by Lisa Dupar - Anyone have it?

After reading more about the book on the voting thread for the September COTM, I decided to break my cardinal rule of not buying a cookbook that I haven't seen firsthand, and ordered it off Amazon last night. The price was $31.00 there. Jessica's Biscuit apparently had it, but now it is on backorder there.
It doesn't look like it will be the COTM, but either way, I look forward to seeing what it has to offer. If someone does a thread on FC&C, I promise to try to cook out of it and chime in :) I'm a lurker on the COTM threads because I never seem to manage to be cooking out of the current title. I don't want to be a voter when I feel like I won't manage to participate. (Guilty sigh). But they are certainly a great reference source for the cookbooks that are chosen.

Thanks to both of you for your input.

*August 2011 Cookbook of the Month Companion Book, PALETAS by Fany Gerson

Um, yeah. Now I've got a craving to try those too. That recipe sounds great. Guess I'll have to add some lemon oil to my order as well...
Thanks once more.

I think I will order the Tavolo molds suggested by Lulusmom and also the set on Amazon made by Norpro. It looks like the Progressive molds, but the sticks are only $3.99 for 100.
Lulusmom - where did you find the recipe for blueberry cheesecake pops? That sounds amazing.

*August 2011 Cookbook of the Month Companion Book, PALETAS by Fany Gerson

Thank you. Those do seem to be a bit pricey - just a bit more than I was wanting to spend :o
I think I will get the same ones but in yellow instead. They look to be the same. Also - i noticed above that you were looking for lemon oil. It is available at kingarthurflour.com and on Amazon as well. I have difficulties at the King Arthur site - it's a bit like Walmart. You go in for paper towels and leave later with a cartful...
Thank you for the help with the pop molds:)

*August 2011 Cookbook of the Month Companion Book, PALETAS by Fany Gerson

I have the book Paletas, but have been travelling for the last few weeks. I have looked everywhere I've been for molds. I took a look on Amazon and saw the Tavolo molds. Would someone possibly post a link to both a large size and a small size mold that you have had some success with? I'm just confused as to which size and shape would work best for Paletas. This is a whole new area for me. I got this book a bit back based on some Chow chit-chat and everything just sounds so delicious. Thanks so much.

"Fried Chicken and Champagne" by Lisa Dupar - Anyone have it?

I have seen this book (and IACP award winner) mentioned here and there in various posts. But - most posters don't seem to have this book yet. I was just wondering if anyone actually has this cookbook and has cooked out of it yet. I am intrigued, as I usually am about a cookbook I can't seem to find anywhere and peruse with my own eyes. It seems to be available mostly on line and is a little pricy for something I can't browse through. The reviews online seem a bit thin. Thanks for any info anyone has.

P.S. Like I need another book to add to my list of "must buy" books :)

What were your last three cookbook purchases...Part 2 [old]

Well, nuts. I can now update my "latest 3 cookbooks" to add: Land of Plenty and Revolutionary Chinese Cuisine. And for good measure, the Irene Kuo tome (the oldie from 1977). I figure if I'm going to explore Chinese cuisine, may as well go all in and really learn something. Now if there were only 48 hours in a day and I could live without sleep, I'd be all set. Thanks Buttertart. :)

Blow their sox off killer appetizer needed for Memorial Day BBQ

Skewer tiny little multi-colored tomatos, small balls of fresh mozzarella cheese and a basil leaf or two. The size and contents of the skewers is up to you. Drizzle with a little reduced balsamic vinegar (best if you do this after you arrive at the bbq). Its easy-peasy, colorful and pretty and while maybe not quite "fantabulous", should go well with whatever other foods are likely to show up at a bbq. Have fun.
P.S. This travels very well too.

What were your last three cookbook purchases...Part 2 [old]

Bushwickgirl - Oooooh - good to know. I haven't had a good stickybun in ages. I'm at my office right now working hard (or rather hardly working...) so can't look to see if the sticky bun recipe is there but will certainly put that at the top of my list for that book if it is.

And yes - holy mole. I usually don't amass this many new books at once. I have been charging my daughters' college tuition on a certain credit card for the last few semesters. So, when I realized this card had a "rewards" feature, I immediately "rewarded" my self with multiple b/n and amazon gift certificates (already having enough cameras, luggage, etc :) ) So I looked over my cookbook wanted list garnered from Chowhound recommendations and there you go. I'm loving this. Plus I just charged her summer tuition, so...

What were your last three cookbook purchases...Part 2 [old]

I have heard nothing but good about the Dunlop books and will look into them. I have only perused Sugarbaby and it looks like it has some interesting and fun ideas. When I get a chance to explore further, I will post about it. It looks like I will be having more time for reading these books than cooking out of them for the next few weeks, but oh well...

jimmy johns sandwiches coming soon to my area....

True, true. I didn't take the delivery part of the deal into consideration. Now I am sudddenly remembering the spate of Domino's Pizza delivery driver accidents from years ago. "30-minute or less delivery or it's free" I believe it was?

jimmy johns sandwiches coming soon to my area....

Went once to the one that opened in Fort Myers on US41. Won't go back. No salads. No soups. Cold bread with cold lunch meat. Generic meat and cheese choices. You're way better off making your own at home. Can't understand why they are in business, but to each his own.

Cooking from the market! What are your favourite Seasonal, Farm Market, Produce Cookbooks?

Thank you. Absolutely will do!

What were your last three cookbook purchases...Part 2 [old]

Modern Art of Chinese Cooking - Barbara Tropp
Breath of a Wok and Stir Frying to the Sky's Edge - Grace Young
Paul Kirk's Championship BBQ

A Return to Cooking - Eric Ripert

Some were used, some almost free, some new and they came from many different sources. Most were recommended somewhere here on Chowhound, some were to fill gaps in my collection and others just looked like fun. Obviously, my daughter and I are going to be working on developing some baking skills this summer. And soon, as the afternoon thunderstorms begin to boom away here in south Florida, I plan on happily 'wokking' away in my kitchen. I have never explored cooking Chinese at home and am excited to do so.
As far as cookbooks - I can think of worse things to be addicted to...

Cooking from the market! What are your favourite Seasonal, Farm Market, Produce Cookbooks?

Thank you Breadcrumbs. I now have Seduced by Bacon (quick glance - um, yum), Vegetable Love (on the way), and the New Southern Garden Cookbook. I'm looking forward to some new veggie ideas for the summer. I have also accidentally purchased a load of other cookbooks in the last few weeks. I'm going to list them over on the " last 3 cookbook purchases" thread. I'm feeling guilty. Well, not really, but you know... ;)

Cooking from the market! What are your favourite Seasonal, Farm Market, Produce Cookbooks?

Yes. Actually those are the Billy Ikea shelves. We have a friend who is uber-handy. He screwed the shelf units together top and bottom, forward and back of each shelf to make them more sturdy. I did this because I couldn't anchor them to the wall because the walls behind them are glass. They seemed pretty sturdy to begin with to me, but with the volume of cookbooks I was planning on putting on them, wanted To get all the extra support possible. If the shelves eventually warp, well they are very inexpensive. I guess time will tell. I couldn't find any bookshelves at office supply stores that were tall enough and that I could configure the way I needed.

Oh - and Breadcrumbs, I see in your picture, on the bottom shelf I think - a book that is "something-I-can't-read....Bacon". Perchance you could tell me what that is. "Bacon" of course caught my eye.

Cooking from the market! What are your favourite Seasonal, Farm Market, Produce Cookbooks?

Why thank you. That is so funny. That is exactly my first instinct whenever I see any kind of bookshelves. These are my new bookshelves (I wasn't kidding) and I will be adding an area rug and a big cushy settee. Oh happy day!

And I think that is the exact spot where Vegetable Love shall go...

Cooking from the market! What are your favourite Seasonal, Farm Market, Produce Cookbooks?

You all are so funny. Breadcrumbs - you know you're gonna look at that link :). I have the cookbook addiction too and wouldn't have it any other way. Love book stores. Love those Amazon and B/N parcels at the door. Love the Quick Picks and Deals of the Day. Hated that Borders closed, but had to add more bookshelves as a result. And I love to curl up with a new cookbook whenever I get the chance. I cook out of many of them, but just enjoy the read with others. And I Always take a look at the books mentioned and discussed here (and end up with more than a few of them).

Actually this thread has provided me with a new list to "look in to" - starting with Vegetable Love.

What were your last three cookbook purchases? - [Old]

Jealous much? Why, yes, I believe I am. :)

Enjoy all your new books. I just received Cocolat yesterday (after hearing so much good about it) and ordering it used from Amazon. I paid half of what you spent on that alone. Bittersweet is great and Maida Heatter is a score as well.

Using Wagnerware - What am I missing not having LeCreuset?

"When I look back on her kitchen, I don't ever try to justify a purchase on NEED, but if I want it, and I think it will make me half the cook she was, I don't feel bad about buying it."

I think that is a great attitude to have. I absolutely agree with you. My Mom too was the same. Nothing fancy needed to cook wonderful meals for her family. And I don't think all the beautiful cookware in the world could make me the cook my mother was.

Now that my daughters are grown and I am finding myself with more time to spend in the kitchen, I love to be surrounded by first of all, my family and friends. Next, fresh and beautiful ingredients and finally tools and utensils that make my kitchen time more fun. And of course, the adventure of learning new techniques or finding a new cuisine to learn about makes it all the better.

Using Wagnerware - What am I missing not having LeCreuset?

Sorry about the delayed response. I've been in my car driving from south Florida to New York (straight through - I'm pooped).. Thank you for the kind words. I love the look of this cookware too, but just thought there was some advantage to LC that I was overlooking. And there is always the something special about cooking in something that you watched your Mom cook in as you grew up and something you know your daughters will be cooking in after you are goine.
Kaleokahu - Yes on the alarm lol. But the bigger worry is that my "protective" pomeranian and shiba inu will slobber you to death and invite you in to give them a biscuit...
Chemicalkinetics - My daughters don't mind hand-scrubbing these. Now if I could just get them to take care of my actual cast-iron for me.
Grenish - Thank you. And like I said, I think I'll just go get the one pretty piece. I haven't quite mastered the theory of "Need it" in the kitchen. I work on the principle of "can I fit just one more thing in my kitchen?". :)
