austin itinerary - any edits/suggestions?

The night time temperature is really the overnight low temperature, which is usually the temperature just before dawn. This would be true of most weather forecasts.

Miracle in Baton Rouge? Watch This Space....

You never made it to Giamanco's?

Threadgill's Only Better

The cafe 290 in Manor has fried chicken livers on the menu. They are not my thing, but friends say they are very good. -- from their menu : Fried Chicken Livers 6.59 A country favorite! Served with cream gravy or brown gravy. Make it dinner with a choice of 2 sides 8.59

Best Tortilla Soup in Austin?

I like the tortilla soup at Vivo

-----
Vivo
2015 Manor Rd, Austin, TX 78722

Looking for a birthday experience for a 9 year old foody.

I'm going to toss the Hula Hut into this mix. The Mexonesian spot has fun decor and you can order one of the pupu platters, like the huli huli luau that includes papas asadas, bbq chicken tacos, flautas, queso, pork ribs, etc. as meal for at least 3 to share My niece and nephew always loved it.

Chinese buffet?

I think maybe rather than the location of a Spaghetti Warehouse, it was the location of the Old San Francisco Steakhouse, but I don't know the name of the new Chinese Buffet there now either.

Montopolis Upscale?

I ate at Patsy's once, a year ago. It was less than meh. Blah burger with standard frozen fries.

VIvo #2 Cedar Park

If you ever return to Vivo, you might try the tortilla soup. I have not been to location #2, but I think the tortilla soup at the Manor Rd. location is very good.

Blackened Shrimp Po' Boy & Fried Pork Chops?

Rosetti's was the precursor to the Schooner (pre-Camille).
I believe that the Flying Falafel uses bread from the Phoenicia Bakery, which is quite good.

Blackened Shrimp Po' Boy & Fried Pork Chops?

Ok, I am also from that area, born in New Orleans, grew up in Biloxi, graduated High Shool in Baton Rouge. I have eaten my fair share of po'boys and while I do feel the bread is very very important, I don't think the only decent po'boy is on Leidenheimer's bread.
Po'boys from the old Rosetti's in Biloxi were on a thinner slightly chewy baguette and were wonderful. The po'boys at Giamanco's in B.R. were on a baked in house italian bread and omg, do I miss their hot roast beef p.b.. What is not acceptable is fauxboy on a "french shaped loaf" (read may as well be a hot dog bun). French bread varies as does gumbo and jambalaya. So, my point is, that the bread at Mama Roux's is pretty decent and, as you said, the shrimp are good, so overall it is much better than no po'boy at all.

Blackened Shrimp Po' Boy & Fried Pork Chops?

I'm not crazy about a lot of the food at Hoover's, but they do fry a decent pork chop. On the regular menu, you will find southern fried pork chops. These are battered and fried. One day a week (maybe Wednesdays), they offer smothered (pan fried, then cooked in gravy) as a chalkboard special. I've never tried these.
For the blackened shrimp po' boy, you might try Mama Roux. They have blackened shrimp available on the menu and they also offer a fried shrimp po' boy, they are pretty accommodating, so might be willing to switch out the fried for blackened shrimp.

Breakfast near the airport

Too late for this particular breakfast, but the Cafe 290 in Manor always provides a reliable breakfast. They are not on the menu, but if you ask, they will make you banana pancakes or even banana nut pancakes.

Cast Iron

You might want to try asking some of the local ironwork artisans like
http://www.larsstanley.com or www.herreraironworks.com. These people would be working
with similar materials and may be able to help you source them.

Mama Roux

What is the breading like on the fried shrimp? Dipped in pancake like batter? Cracker meal? Corn meal? A light roll in flour?
How is the tartar sauce?

Austin Burger Smackdown!

I like the onion chili cheeseburger at the short stop. It is reminiscent of the chili burger of my youth from the A & W rootbeer stand in Biloxi.

What's your favorite thing to dip french fries in?

Maybe I missed it, but in all these replies, I've not seen my favorite dip for french fires, tartar sauce.

Best Chicken Fried Steak in Austin and the Hinterlands

Onion rings

Although the Bake House has gone downhill some over time, the do have the closest ring I've found to this type. They call them onion strings, but they are the closest I've found to the type you are talking about. (The Bake House used to have a pretty good Bacon swiss burger too.) Charlie's steak house in New Orleans served this type of onion ring many years ago. Dirty's used to have this style of onion ring, but no more.
They are not the extra skinny sort, but Phil's ice house has good rings, slender, not heavily breaded and just a bit greasy.

Looking for a good breakfast spot way north. . .

The City Cafe is now entirely nonsmoking.

Although they are not on the menu, if you ask nicely, the 290 will make banana or banana nut pancakes for you.

Best "Bang for Your Buck" Steak in Town

Hmmm. My husband and I ate at Nancy's about a month ago and found it to be, well, a "Western Sizzler" experience. Maybe it was a bad day for Nancy's, but I am reluctant to return.

I've Driven By There A Thousand Times

I also grew up near an old A&W in Biloxi. I know of no existing A&W that bears any resemblance to the old ones. I guess there could be one out there, but not around these parts.

I've Driven By There A Thousand Times

You should stop in for some frozen custard. It is not the usual softserve, but real frozen custard. I've only had the chili burger and it was pretty average drive-in standard.

Old Restaurants in Austin

Green Pastures?

Manor Restaurants

And if you happen in to the Cafe 290 for breakfast, they are not on the menu, but you can order delicious banana or banana pecan pancakes.

Who have the best pie for holiday?

The "some restaurant in Elgin" would be the City Cafe.

Water Ice in Austin??

You will not be disappointed in your Casey's snowball. They taste just like the snowballs I grew up eating in Biloxi. They are the real thing. Spearmint mmmmmmmmmmm.

El Chile Coming to Northwest Hills

I agree, the salsa is bitter.
