ZED"S New Restaurant in Tech Ridge

We tried the new restaurant, Zed's, in Tech Ridge for lunch. We had the Tortilla soup which was a creamy, tasty soup. $5 per cup. Very small pcs of avocado and chicken with tortilla strips. Would probably order again. The caesar salad dressing had anchovies and shaved parmesan. Very good but $5 was high. Two ordered the fried Catfish. 2 large filets, but very salty and greasy. Small side of french fries, nothing special. $13 per platter 1 had the ribeye. Was very satisfied but very pricy ($35) for what he had. I had the chicken pot pie. It was probably the best that I have ever had. $11 for a very good portion of creamy sauce, fresh carrots and potatoes, with small pieces of chicken. Puff Pastry crusted the top. No big deal on desserts. Very beautiful setting and live music will start soon. Will go back for the chicken pot pie for sure but only when I feel like splurging.

Round Rock visits - help a Boston hound out of a rut?

Round Rock is full of non chain restaurants. Gino's Italian on Mays (Great Lasagne), Main Street Grill (great salads, steaks) and Louisiana Longhorn Cajun (Gumbos and Etouffees, Fish dishes and great desserts) in the historical downtown district, Cafe 620 (Breakfast) and Gumbo's on RR620,(great fish dishes) Origami Japanese in the Sprouts shopping center at RR620 and I-35, Moriella's Mexican on Hwy 79.(great chili rellenos) All of these resaurants have vegetables and salads.

Where to get sourdough bread?

I will third this one. Try their clam chowder in the sourdough bread bowl. Best one I have ever had. They also have an asparagus soup that is great. It is thin and creamy. Not some canned soup version. Their salads are alway fresh. Great teas also. All of their sandwiches are big enough to split. Have purchased bread to take home and have never been dissatisfied.

When does the oyster die?

I agree wholeheartedly! If a raw oyster is not clear, soft and salty in the shell, I stay away from them. Pasteurized oysters have a milky and harder texture to them. Just had some at Pappadeauxs last week and they were horrible. When asked how fresh they were, the waitress replied that they are "injected with a pasteurization process to kill bacteria".
Won't be doing that for a while! On the other hand, the pontchartrain grouper was excellent. Also had the fried crawfish tails that were good.

Best Fajitas in Austin?

Even though I try to never frequent chains, Pappasitos has the beef fajitas down better than any that I have ever eaten. They not only start with quality meat, they tenderize the meat in a tumbler machine. The marinade is just right. It does not leave a aftertaste as some others do. My only complaint with the shrimp fajitas is if you forget to ask them to peel them before cooking, they come out with the shells cooked on and you leave most of the meat in the shell.

Please recommend a casual bar/eatery for 10+ in NorthWest or North Central

Agree with Amysue on Cover 3. We have been several times now trying the appetizers, sandwiches, and steaks. My favorites include the Green Chile Nachos - Beans, fajita meat, sauce - oooey gooey good, the reuben - huge but delicious. Lots of meat and cheese. Prefer the chop house burger with parmesan fries over the steak. Also have had the fried chicken breast with garlic mashed potatoes. Good, but not as good as the burger and nachos. Portions are huge. Somewhat pricey, but I don't mind paying for quality when it is this good.

Friar Tucks Pantry in RR

Tried Friar Tucks Pantry after we left the Longhorn on Friday night. Had the citrus shortbread cookies. Utterly delicious. Also bought a pound of expresso, not bad but pricey. Another in our party had they chocolate torte. Very rich, not too sweet. Very relaxing atmosphere. Can see me being a regular, especially for my sweet tooth!

Fujian Grand Buffet

I don't know, but when you find it let me know. My husband loves Chinese buffets, but I'm not so keen on them. We tried Fujian when it first opened and even he did not like it. Frankly, it scared me. Not one of the dishes that I tried was hot. It seemed that everything was luke warm. We live in RR but will drive whereever if it is a good buffet.

I've Driven By There A Thousand Times

Mann's is not Lockhart BBQ but will do in a tight. My favorite is the sausage wrap. They also have sides of vegetables that are quite tasty. Tuesdays and Thursdays they serve these wonderful, gooey, fudge brownies. Try to make it on one of those days.

Manor Restaurants

Thought we would leave RR for a drive in the country this weekend. Dale Rice reviewed Manor Cafe 290. The CFS picture in the paper did look good. Also, someone mentioned Good Luck Cafe outside of Manor. Would appreciate any recommendations.

Who makes the best coconut cream pie in town?

No question about it, Louisiana Longhorn in Round Rock. It is a custard base with lots of coconut and topped with whipped cream and more coconut. This tastes just like my Grandmother's. They sell pies too. We get them for parties, etc.

Small joint, local products, seasonal food?

Yes The Inn at Brushy Creek was great. Some of my favorite dishes include pork and they used to have a wonderful roasted pork dish. Makes my mouth water now. You should give Main Street Grill a try.

Small joint, local products, seasonal food?

Being a Round Rocker for a long time, we have several non-chain restaurants. Gino's for Italian. Very good red sauce. My family's favorite pizza. Casual. Main Street Grill, RR's first fine dining. Great service and food. Try their pork dishes. Louisiana Longhorn, fresh seafood and authentic Cajun dishes and homemade desserts. Mom's Cafe, great comfort food. Check hours before going. 620 Cafe, great for breakfast. Umpteen Family owned Mexican restaurants. RR is worth the drive north.

Tea shops?

I also recommend The Steeping Room and Keria Teas in Round Rock. Both have excellent selections of teas. Keria Teas is really helpful when you want to try something new. They always have delicious scones to enjoy while sipping. I have done their teas at different times and have always enjoyed them. - by reservation only - While the steeping room has a great selection of teas and their salads and sandwiches are delicious, it still seems "too commercial" for a relaxing afternoon. It is quite busy and noisy, while Keria Teas setting is an old 100 year old historical building with squeaky floors. I recommend Kerias Teas over The Steeping Room.

El Patio on Guadalupe?

My favorite part of El Patio's dishes is that they do not fill the plate up with shredded lettuce, etc. You order beans, rice, enchiladas... and that is what you get. The food is always hot. Their chili sauce has lots of meat and does not have a bitter taste. They are my favorite Tex Mex restaurant.

chicken liver lovers?

I agree with sqwertz, gizzards need to be precooked first. I've not found decent livers or gizzards since moving to this area. Charlie's Steakhouse in Pflugerville has them, but the gizzards are tough and the livers are bland.
They are easy to cook at home so that's what I normally do. Would like to find some good ones out though.

Best Desserts

Try Chez Zee's. Their Lemon Rosemary Cake and Orange Chiffon Cakes are my favorite. They have a dessert for every taste.

Crawfish Price Check (and quality)

I don't consider myself an expert on boiled crawfish, but I know what I like and don't like. Pappadeaux - last Monday - were $4.95 for 1-1/4# - These were awful. They were very oily and had chili powder on the outside seasoning. Their special is for Monday and Tuesday only.

Sambet's - I agree - the worst I have ever had. Don't really get the excitement about this place.

Sam's Boat - Pretty good - Kind of hard to peel, but still good. Waiter said the crawfish were hard to peel this year?? They were still $5.95 a couple of weeks ago.

LA Longhorn Cafe - I've had some of the best ones I have ever had there. They were still pretty high - 3 lbs for around $18 or $19 - can't remember - but very good size. Supposedly, supplier has not come down on price due to transportation costs. I get mine regular spice which is pretty spicy and they did not have the seasoning on the outside.

Hope this helps.

Pacific Star

I agree with Sofa King. Living in RR we go to La. Longhorn Cafe when we want good seafood. Their food is always good and the amounts they give you are way too plentiful. They are not cheap, but then again you get what you pay for. We have been a lot during Lent and they never fail us. I gave up desserts for Lent, but I will go next week for the homemade key lime pie and chocolate pie. My goodness they are good. I am partial to the whole catfish at Springhill. The rest there is just ok. And, though Gumbo's is expensive and more fine dining than I want at most times, their fish dishes are good.

sanfrancisco bakery

SFB is one of our lunch spots. Their salads are so fresh, lettuce always crispy and they have sliced, very thin, crispy carrots. My favorite dish is the clam chowder in a bread bowl. OMG, thank goodness I have a great metabolism! The cream of asparagus soup is really good. This is a thin based cream soup, light and creamy.
Their french bread is always crusty on the outside and soft on the center. The pastries that we have tried have always been good. I like the cream cheese topped. Always flaky and creamy. Sometimes the service is not that great. The two guys - maybe brothers - are not the friendliest in the world. But, the food makes up for it. Give it a try, you'll like it!

Reasonably Priced Steak

Family went to Mesa Ranch for our son's birthday. 2 of us had the tenderloins and 2 had the cowboy ribeyes. Both were cooked to perfection and for the price of the steaks, I would highly recommend. We had the roasted red pepper soup and cheese stuff poblano pepper with grilled shrimp for starters. The soup was the best stuff I have tasted in a long time. It was thick and creamy and just sweet enough to be good. Parmesan cheese and just a hint of bacon flavored it. The pepper was good, but not as good as the soup. Disappointed in the side salads. Croutons and lettuce?? also not much flavor in the tequila ranch dressing. Cactus shaped cornbread was good and moist. Cheesecake for dessert - just ok. But, the steaks were great.

??"Puffy Taco" Main St., Round Rock

I agree with nytexan. Gumbos is much better than Papadeaux's. And, it is local. We eat their fish specials every time we go. Much better ambiance too. Our kids (and us too) love La.Longhorn. They are very kid friendly but not so much that the adults don't enjoy it. Last week we had the redfish with a fondue sauce. The fish was cooked perfectly and we used the french bread to soak up every drop of the sauce. Main Street and LL are our favorites. Sorry for the length but is LaMadelines a local restauant or will it be another chain coming to town.

Valentine's Day Set Menu

Main Street Grill in Round Rock always has a nice selection. We did this a couple of years ago. They had the complete meal selections with dessert. We always have the Monica Salad which is baby field greens, candied nuts, blue cheese and strawberries with a wonderful balsamic dressing (that they bottle and sell in the restaurant). We chose the filet that night which was cooked perfectly, and had some type of chocolate mousse cake. We had reservations and the service was superb. Overall the experience was great.

??"Puffy Taco" Main St., Round Rock

Maybe next time you can get there in time for the breakfast tacos. We order them weekly. They are just the right size. I'm the bland one of the group so I usually get the potato, bacon and cheese. The bacon is thin and crispy, not the chewy, hard pieces you usually get in a bacon taco. Round Rock has finally gotten restaurants that are worthy enough to stay in RR to eat.

I Miss Sea Island Shrimp House.. :(

When we want seafood, we go to Louisiana Longhorn Cafe in Round Rock. They have the best shrimp in town. And that means Austin too. My husband eats their raw oysters and boiled crawfish. We have been to Captain's at lunch and they are usually pretty good too. We stay away from Pacific Star. It's cheap but the quality is not there.

Baris' Pasta and Pizza in Pflugerville

Four of us dined at Baris' last night on recommendation of amykragan. We were not disappointed either. I had the chicken parmigiana. The only improvement I would suggest would be to serve the chicken pounded. The breast was too thick and not as tender as I would prefer. It was served with pasta and marinara sauce. I added a meatball for $3.50 - not worth it - 2" meatball - 2 others had the veal parmigiana - one with alfredo sauce and the other one with the marinara and sausage. This was the best meal of the night. Our fourth had the canoli and he said it was very creamy. The rolls were the best. We will be back.
