Brick & Mortar
ha - i was there for ziggy stardust too. i like the idea of the vinyl behind the bar but i was wondering about the feasibility of keeping it going when they get busy... tho i'm sure there's an ipod dock lurking nearby.
tried the sister mary off the cocktail menu and it was good but too sweet for my taste... followed with refreshing margarita. friend enjoyed a few moscow mules. i thought a lot of the snacks sounded promising; we tried the warm raclette app, which was good except that its cornichons and pickled onions weren't the best match for my beverage - my fault, not theirs!
i don't think the decor is the *least* bit divey. "spartan chic" maybe. it was great to see misty and patrick alongside gary and i'll be back but my first visit didn't leave me with the warm cozy "i'll be a regular here" vibe...
Ma Po Tofu (Dofu) adventures
The Ma Po Tofu is my go-to dish at Shangri La in Belmont - super delish!
Between Albany and Middlebury, VT?
Have you already gone? In Glens Falls I'd say Massie's (old school italian) or Bistro Tallulah. Other than than search for Saratogs recs.

Mount Tremper, NY recommendations?
I stayed one night in Mt. Tremper about 2 years ago and second recommendations on both La Duchesse Anne and Sweet Sue's! La Duchesse Anne was very cute and I had fantastic trout entree. Do *not* order more than one pancake at Sweet Sue's!
Only stayed long enough to try those spots so don't have any other recs.

1000 Islands Trip: Foodie Recommendations?
Yikes; that region can be kind of a foodie ghost town... You're most likely to find decent/filling mom and pop style places than anything else...
I like this site for that type of information -- they have a forum and listings by state or food type (a bit cumbersome as it spits out a list (map version available if you're a paid subscriber)):
http://www.roadfood.com/
I was up there a few years back (US side only) and recall that Clayton seemed to have slightly better dining options than Alex Bay but can't recall any specifics at the moment. I usually content myself with a fish sandwich, a bottle of cold Canadian beer and, preferably, a waterfront view up there.
Clayton also has the River Rat Cheese store, where you can get all sorts of NYS cheddar products... and of course 1000 Island Dressing. Sidenote: Alex Bay has a drive-in movie theatre, which can be fun.
Make sure to try a Mexican Sundae if you see one listed at any dairy bars... just your basic ice cream sundae but with chocolate syrup and salted peanuts!
Johnnies on the Side and Blu
"Real martini" chiming in on the Blu experience... Always a treat to happen across blue cheese stuffed olives for a martini! The duck legs were a nice treat and an unusual find, for me anyway, but were *prohibitively* salty... I feel like maybe the jalapeno honey they were served with, which was delicious, should have been drizzled directly on them instead of being pooled on the plate, which made it difficult to eat.
Highland Kitchen Last Night - Long
Their shrimp and grits is indeed fab; AND on the brunch menu -- so you CAN have it for breakfast!
Recs near Harvard square for Dinner. $$ Inexpensive to Moderate.
I'll add my two cents for the Plough and Stars on Mass Ave between Harvard and Central Squares. Cozy, pubby space with a basic menu enhanced by great dinner specials.

I'm a pretty frequent flyer at Tamarind's lunch buffet, particularly since the closure/move of Bombay. While I don't think the choices are anything out of the ordinary, I do find them them a bit spicier, in heat and complexity, than I did those at Bombay, which works for me. Have you tried Tanjore on Eliot... I haven't been as often but I recalled thinking they perhaps had a larger buffet selection?
In Oswego for a week, and a girl's gotta eat
My sister went to school in Oswego and still talks about breakfast at Wade's Diner. No website but here's the yelp link --

Too bad you're there in winter (for obvious reasons) but also because you can't get to Rudy's -- old fashioned fish fry joint.
I also highly recommend a quick stop at Heid's of Liverpool if you're a hot dog lover -- just a few miles north of Syracuse.

Woodward at the Ames
Went this past Monday for drinks and snacks at the downstairs bar. It was *packed,* which surprised me, I guess I thought the Monday between the holidays would be quiet. Lucked out with 3 seats at the downstairs bar, service was okay but not great - took at least two attempts with two bartenders to order food and no one really inquired about ordering subsequent rounds.
I appreciated the carafe option on the wines and took advantage of the pinot grigio; one friend ordered a french 75 and it looked very citrus-y to me but she enjoyed it. Had read about the duck confit flatbread recs here and so went with that and also the rock shrimp with tomatoes and olives. Flatbread was nice and crispy, the duck-goat cheese-cranberry combo was nice, just a maybe a bit dry overall for me... maybe it could use a drizzle of olive oil or something, not sure if it did. It was also pretty large for the price. The shrimp were great -- tender with a nice shrimpy flavor, I feared the olives would overpower but nope. Only letdown was the breadsticks that accompanied it -- they were long and crispy and made soaking up the buttery shrimp sauce difficult. I'd prefer a softer roll or sliced baguette. (And yes, I dipped the crust of the flatbread in there!)
Perhaps slightly off topic, but was anyone else annoyed at the lack of signs for the hotel and restaurant? I guess it's their "thing" but it seems pretentious and unnecessary?
harvard square late night eats and drinks
I'm pretty sure you can access Garden at the Cellar's entire upstairs menu downstairs, in addition to the bar menu, except on Sundays and Mondays. FYI, downstairs is cash only!
Turkey Day on I-87
I think it might be helpful if you provided a bit more detail on how far along you might be when you'd like to stop and eat...
The Local
Agree that the burger and fries were nothing to write home about, but the lobster mac and cheese was deliciously rich, creamy and chock full of lobster on a recent visit. I can't imagine the place crowded and wouldn't consider waiting for for than 2 minutes. That said, I've enjoyed my few visits, on weekends, at the bar, for a casual lunch with average food and friendly service.
Plough and Stars
Whoops - Just found out from one of the staff that they're only serving lunch Fridays. I mentioned that the website is out of date.
Plough and Stars
I know the kitchen was closed for a short spell a few weeks back for some pretty intensive repairs, but that it's since reopened... Perhaps a relapse/emergency repair of some sort and they didn't open at all? Odd that there was no notice posted though.
driving from Boston to Buffalo, any food detours to suggest?

A little love for Lineage
Was in the 'hood for the first time in a while last week and enjoyed some of the dollar oysters to start, followed by some great calamari. I appreciated the accompanying lemon-pepper aioli, and the chick pea salad too, but missed the tentacles, as the portion was rings only.
Halibut entree was slightly disappointing -- the fish was completely unseasoned, while the house-made bacon and veg base that it sat atop was overwhelmingly salty... I know it's bacon, so it's gonna be salty, but it reminded me of someone's recent defense on Top Chef, I forget whose, where they said it was intentional, that you were meant to get a balanced bite each time, it just didn't work out that way.
Agree that friendly service by Ryan at the bar was a highlight of the night.
Is the Phoenix the best bet for an anniversary dinner in the Mt Tremper/ woodstock area?
Make sure to add Sweet Sue's to your list if you're a pancake aficionado. They'll put just about *anything* into a pancake! In the tiny hamlet of Phoenicia.

Search the board for Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck recs -- there are quite a few options and quite a few posts. Have fun.
The Reagle Beagle!
Wow... I happened to drive by last night and it still looked awfully dusty and barren... Don't get that way very often so I was hoping the open door meant they were open for business!

Dinner in Harvard Square...moderate prices
Tory Row?
http://www.toryrow.us/menu.html
delicious, yet low-key in cambridge?
Two spots right on Mass Ave between Harvard and Central Square come to mind:
Plough and Stars -- tough to get a true feel of the menu because there are several nightly specials which really add a lot to the offerings
http://www.ploughandstars.com/menus/dinner_6_08.html
Garden at the Cellar -- a bit higher for entrees, but a lot of price flexibility given the small plates/apps/flatbread options
http://www.gardenatthecellar.com/menus/index.php
Noir's $5, $4, $3, $2, $1 menu is great!
I will say that the price of the cocktails has the potential to quickly erode your happy hour menu savings... But you won't care after a few anyway!
Lake George, NY this weekend -- old school / local spots?
Hello --
Will be making a trek this coming weekend with a group who favor all things old-school, kitschy and divey... who are more road-foodies than foodies. Decor/vibe rival interest in food with this set.
With that in mind, I'm curious as to any suggestions for diners, bars, dairy bars and a restaurant for dinner on Saturday (not highbrow). I've read quite a bit here but ruled out a lot given my "parameters."
So far I've got --
Breakfast--
Pancake House
Prospect Mountain Diner
Hotdogs Icecream Etc--
A&W
New Way Lunch of Queensbury
Martha’s Dandee Cream
Dinner--
Mario's Lake George
Ridge Terrace Restaurant
Pumpernickel’s
Taste of Poland
What am I missing? Help me find a local watering hole!
