places to get yakamein

The Old Taco Bell is actually called Orleans Seafood. Got my Yakamein fix yesterday. The Manchu I referred to is on Broad between Orleans and Ursaline. Not very good.

places to get yakamein

We like the yakamein from the old Taco Bell at Claiborne and Louisiana Ave. We get the chicken and shrimp, ask for it spicy, about once a week. It's under 5 bucks and is enough for 2. The rest of the food here is so-so, but the red beans with sausage are not bad. Tried Manchu on Broad, and was not impressed.

What a pork dish!

sounds totally yummy!

Overlooked Area for Great Food

We have a penchant for going to smaller festivals.....basically school fairs. Some have the usual fair food such as burgers and pizza, but others have outstanding food. Although much of their food is run of the mill, the Tomato Festival this weekend has the most awesome "Tomatoes A La Chalmette". It's fried green tomatoes (not overbattered or fried to end of their life like at Jazz Fest) covered with a shrmp cream sauce. Awesome. We also like comparing jambalayas but this one is boring, but they have a good shrimp pasta.

Best muffaletta in La - N.Orleans, Baton Rouge, or Cajun country

DiMartino's is the worst. We heard so much about the place and decided to give it a try last weekend. $16 later and would have been a ripoff at $4. No meat, stale,,and I mean STALE bread, and attitude from the cashier. Will never go back.
Nor-Joe's hands down winner in the city. In a pinch, Zara's on Prytania is not bad, better in my opinion then Central.

The very BEST King Cake?

No question as far as our family-Haydels. Used to love McKenzies, but they are gone. Boo Hoo.

Brocato's Eat Dat

We never go to New Orleans East. There are relatively few businesses open but Now I have a reason to go. We went at 3 in the afternoon, so I don't know how busy they get. The atmosphere is kind of offsetting. It is very sterile with white walls with little on them and it's very bright. It gives the impression of a place where one would just pick up a poboy. But WOW, the food was exceptional. Worth the trip. We got the chicken and andouille gumbo-great. Then my husband got the panko crusted fried pork cutlet with greens, mashed potatoes and cornbread. He loved it. It was about $12. I spent $15 and got fried green tomatoes topped with crab cakes topped with shrimp remoulade. It came with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables. It was extremely fresh tasting and we both left with more than enough for another meal. Highly recommend it.

Where can we get Brazilian food?

We are looking for a place to get some Brazilian food as our place on Canal St. closed. Don't really care about atmosphere and would prefer to avoid pricier places. Thank you.

Saltwater Grill Uptown?

They have a really good crawfish in a boule. We enjoyed it but probably won't go back as they close so early (9PM).

pre-K delivery service?

When I was in college, I delivered for Ponchatrain Gourmet Delivery which handled about 15 restaurants. The concept is good, but quality control can be a problem. With so many different restaurants, it was hard for a driver to look at a styrofoam dish and make sure it was correct. Restaurants seem to have a hard time with togo/takeout if it is not a big part of their everyday service. How many times has your order been wrong at the drive thru of a fast food place, even though that is a huge part of the business. Another problem is that most people want the food delivered too quickly. I could get it to you still warm, but an hour wait for delivery is too long for somepeople. Logistics are a problem when delivering from more than one restaurant.
I was talking to someone just last week about getting some sort of business like that going and we are actually meeting later this week. I have the sales/delivery knowledge, she has the office/accounting.
What restaurants would people be interested in?

What happened to Chaparral Patio?

Felipe's on Calhoun and Claiborne does a pretty decent job of "truck style tacos." Not the same bargain, but open til 9pm. My wife and I both like the burritos. Give them a try.

Best bars with great food in NOLA

Cooter Brown's is an easy streetcar ride from the quarter and a pretty cool place. Fantastic beer selection and good bar food.

Family Friendly restaurants in New Orleans

I wouldn't normally recommend them, but with you kids, quality is not as important as time. Try Mulate's right across the street. Stick with basics, fried shrimp or fish and french fries. I wouldn't venture much deeper. Good Luck.

Anchor Steam

Sorry roro, Mr. Hunt is correct. "The Parish" has always referred to Jefferson Parish.

Mandina's!

My wife and I like to go on Mondays for lunch. Along with red beans, they have the shrimp creole as a daily special. For the last couple of weeks, they have also had the creole eggplant as a "blackboard special." it is outstanding. We order a shrimp remoulade to share and each get a different special to share. We have to get take out boxes-overwhelming amount of food. I like crackers on the table, reminds me of younger days.

$10 or less lunch - Uptown New Orleans

I agree with Celeste. There are lots of choices, so you have the option of changing up almost daily and staying within your budget. Felipe's is a great value and the veggie burrito is one of the best things on the menu. Boswell's Jamaican, although not really uptown, Its a quick trip down Jeff Davis Pkwy to Tulane Ave, should fit your bill.

Metairie dining

The first thing I thought of was the Peppermill. People of your mom's generation make up the majority of the clientel and it is very comfortable. The food is fantastic and the prices are unbeatable. My second choice is Drago's. It can be a little noisy, but still a great place with a large menu. Merry Christmas to your mom and dad!

Dinner next Wednesday

Mary Mahoneys in Biloxi. It's a block off the beach. My wife and I had a great meal there around this time last year.

Bread Pudding

I am not much of a fan, but my wife basis some restaurants we go to on the bread pudding. Her favorite is the Bread Pudding PoBoy at Ye Olde College Inn. It is pan fried before serving to give it a little crust. It's served with rum sauce and a sprinkling of powdered sugar. She also likes Luke and the Fairgrounds. She likes the bread pudding itself at Bon Ton Cafe, but says the bourbon(whiskey) sauce is way too strong.

Thanksgiving at the Fairgrounds.

Don't think it would have made much of a difference. The staff was just very unenthusiastic about the whole idea of being "at work." Surly attitudes with the " I'm, doing you a favor". Besides, I don't tip upfront.

Thanksgiving at the Fairgrounds.

Went to the track on Friday for the first day of the season. Got a corned beef sandwich.
Tasted as good as always. Wife got bread pudding. They do a good job.
Service---HORRIBLE. I hope they get thier act together before
Thanksgiving Day.

Feel-better NOLA food?

I'm sure this is too late, but try a true New Orleans original-Yakamein. After scouring numerous places, we've found the best to be at Orleans Seafood on Claiborne. At the old Taco Bell. Makes me feel better every time. P.S. Order it extra spicy and it'll help with a hangover too.

La Truffe Sauvage in Lake Charles? anyone?

I don't know what "modern LA" is, but we loved the restaurant. It has been since 2005 (right during and after Katrina) so it may have changed, but we enjoyed it. After exhaustive research, we found it was the only "nice" restaurant in Lake Charles. Don't get me wrong=there are loads of restaurants there with outstanding food, but not many places with the quality of atmosphere, wine and service.

Cheesesteaks in NOLA?

There is a place on the Westbank expressway called Philly Cheesesteak in the shopping mall with the Winn Dixie at the entrance to West Jeff Hospital. Not Philly quality, but they make them on the flat-top while you watch. A little greasy, but not bad. Also, New City Dinner on Causeway near the interstate has a philly cheesteak on the menu. Haven't tried it, the big breakfast is to good to pass up, but I asked the waitress; she said she is from Philadelphia and it was pretty close. She said they use the white deli cheese and that is a good sign. Good luck!

Coolinary Menu Report

Here is our report of the three restaurants that we tried with the Coolinary Menu or other specials.
Ralph's On The Park-Would Not do this restaurant again.
The location is gorgeous and the restaurant itself is comfortable, but we were really disappointed in the food. We got the three appetizers with a glass of wine special. We had the turtle soup (just OK), the roof bacon salad (The best thing we had), jumbo shrimp (impressive looking, but somehow the cornflake crust was bizarre and stole the flavor from the shrimp), wild mushroom ravioli (lacked flavor), crab ravigote napoleon (a bizarre mix of flavors that did not enhance the crab) and baked oysters (dull). Appetizers are the favorite part of the menu for us and for us not to find something that said Wow was a disappointment.

Bacco-We finally made it here. It's been a long time coming and it was worth it. The corn and crab bisque was OK and we enjoyed the mista salad. I enjoyed the lobster ravioli and my wife really liked her pork loin. Next time we're getting the shrimp. They look Great!! The service was off, but I think they were short and I expect the service is usually good.

Pelican Club-Absolutely Love it and would recommend this place to anyone. It's a comfortable restaurant. Check the wine prices-you may want to get a bottle instead of by the glass. We usually get different items on the menu, so we can try different foods, but we both decided on the seafood martini. We were so glad we did. It was the perfect blend of flavors with the potato salad, the seafood and the sauce. This we now rank along with Muriel's crawfish and goat cheese crepes (known in our house as "Little pillows of Heaven) as the number one appetizer in the city. I had the fish with crabmeat which had a wonderful jalapeno hollandaise. My wife had the filet and raved about the truffled potatoes. Highly recommend.

Best French Fries

I worked at ATII's in the early 80's when Gus and Michelle owned the place. The cheese fries at the time were by far the best to be had anywhere. I don't recall other restaurants even serving cheese fries then. But hey, I was a young, semi-drunk bartender working in the busiest college bar in the city. Monkey Hill does not serve food. They are more interested in overpriced drinks served by well endowed bartenders with major attitudes. Not like the old days.

Brazilian Food

While we were renovating, there was a Brazilian lady who drove by with a truck selling food which we absolutely loved. She sold plates with steak, chicken, rice, vegetables and an egg. Does anyone know if she has moved her business to another part of town and if so, where? Or does anyone know where we could get some Braziian food.

live crawfish

I talked to Arthur at Jefferson Seafood on Jefferson Hwy. by Picadilly) early in the week and he was getting a couple nice sacks every couple of days. They are high, 3.50/#, but when the craving is there, sometimes you just gotta pay the piper

Two Po Boy Questions

Make sure to have them send a bunch of napkins, it can get pretty messy. I'd go for the rb. Unless shrimp are still hot, the batter tends to fall off, and if they are delivering, you don't know the time between frying and delivery.

best po boys

Not the best, among the worst. Do not waste your time. Try Mahoney's on Magazine street. At the top of the list now. Parasol's and Ignatius for great Roast Beef, but not so great on some others. Parkway Bakery for great Roast Beef and a real New Orleans experience.
