How do you get rid of fruit flies in your kitchen??

I have a book called "1001 Uses for Vinegar" which suggests this method. I've tried it and it does work.

Killer cupcakes in SD?

Elizabeth makes awesome red velvet cupcakes. Moist and delicious. She doesn't use red food coloring, but rather beet powder to get that wonderful day-glo red. If you want them I would call ahead, sometimes she is sold out late in the day.

truly authentic Buffalo wings in San Diego

I love Wing Wednesday. Being a somewhat of masochist I tend to go for the Hell's Bells (hottest) and DOA (second hottest). Gotta love the feeling when your lips go completely numb and your toungue is crying for relief. Then the feel good endorphins kick in and everyone asks why you're acting so goofy. The next morning is not as much a pleasant experience.

Karinya Thai in Pacific Beach

"When you tell them to make it spicy, they do!"

Yes! I've just started asking Thai places to make it a 12 or 13 so I get that pleasure of pain spicyness that makes me perspire. I think most Thai places are on the American scale. Another place that does well with that is Lanna Thai which is located in the same strip mall as Sushi Ota. Great Drunken Noodles.

Best BBQ in San Diego?

Now by no means am I a BBQ guru but I used to enjoy the Barbeque Burrito down at The BBQ House on Newport in Ocean Beach. It is BBQ chicken or pork, baked beans, cole slaw wrapped in a giant flour tortilla. You can get the sauce spicy or mild.

Elizabethan Desserts in Encinitas- YUM!

I see people have found my new favorite dessert spot. I dream about her pies. The crust has a great texture and is very flavorful. Normally I shy away from pies because people make the crust dry, chalky, tasteless, or use a bunch of Crisco (yuck). Not hers. After trying the cherry I went back and got the blackbird pie (blackberry, blueberry, marion berry, and raspberry)...delicious. Elizabeth said once they come into season she will be doing Strawberry Rhubarb and possibly in the summer a Cool Lemon pie. I feel like Homer Simpson talking about doughnuts...mmm...pies.

Best Hamburger in San Diego?

I usually go to Crest Cafe and get the Butter Burger. I love their fries even though my significant other thinks they underseason them.

NuNu's - Also in Hillcrest which I haven't seen anyone mention. They are a divey-type bar but they actually make some tasty burgers and other bar type food. Then you can tie one on if you so desire

When I lived in OB, Hodad's was the place. Those burgers are stacked so high getting one in your mouth is like trying to shove a golf ball through a garden hose.

Where can i find a decent meatball sub in SD?

I second the Brooklyn Pizzeria for meatball subs. They can also make a pretty good calzone that's so big you can eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Pizza in SD

You could try Cassanova's in Ocean Beach on Abbott. I would put it up there with Bronx easily. And the you could watch the OB crazies walk by, which in my opinion are much crazier than the Hillcrest crazies. Ah what ambiance.

Parents visiting SD: hotel and food recommendations

I'm partial to the cafeteria style vegetarian/vegan restaurant on the top floor of the People's Co-op Market in OB. Its right in your neighborhood and they actually turn out some some tasty dishes if you are looking for a quick bite.

What's your favorite sweet in San Diego?

Ah, If you are looking for a homie comfort-food bakery you should check out Elizabethan Desserts in Encinitas. I stumbled onto it by accident as it sits inside a nursery (I was shopping for our garden) and ended up buying more pastry than plant. I had the mini sour cherry pie with lattice top which is easily the best pie I've ever eaten in San Diego. I've been thinking about for days now. I also tried the Tropical Buckle (pineapple, mango, bananas and coconut) which was also delicious. My wife is still raving about the Banana Cream Pie and we also liked the Cinnamon Nut Coffee Cake with cream cheese filling.

The owner, Elizabeth said she had opened for retail two months ago but has been selling to restaurants in the area for quite some time now. She was super nice and talked with us as she kept pulling these fragrant concoctions out of the oven. Her little shop was a throwback, decorated with things you might find in Grandma's kitchen and the music playing (Patsy Cline) added to that retro feel. There are quite a few things I'm going back to try. Here is her website http://www.elizabethandesserts.com

best thai in San Diego?

I've had many great meals at Karinya Thai which is right at the end of Garnet in Pacific Beach. Then you and your guests could cruise the beach. Good luck with parking though.
