How much do I tip? How much should I tip? How much do YOU tip? etc.... [moved from Ontario board]

Most provinces do NOT have a different minimum wage for tipped vs non-tipped workers, and in those that do the difference is less than a dollar. It's not like the US where food servers can be legally paid less than $3 an hour.

Looking for a odd restaurant in Nova Scotia

I believe you are thinking of the diner that used to be near the entrance to the Blomidon Look Off/Cape Split. The name escapes me, but it closed several years ago. Perhaps DeeDee's?

Places to eat w/kids and advice on activities

Yeah, Tripadvisor is full of posts from parents who don't understand why people who pay hundreds of dollars for Broadway tickets don't want to share the experience with infants and toddlers. All Broadway theaters have age limits for entrance. Even children's shows like Annie have an age limit.

I trust you know your three year old won't be allowed into the theater?

Pain d'epice

My point is - the names may translate, but they are not the same thing. I've eaten many versions of gingerbread in North America, and many versions of pain d'epices in France. They are entirely different foods.

Pain d'epice

Gingerbread in North America is nothing like the pain d'epices sold in France. The pain d'epices is darker, richer, with less ginger and less sweet. It's delicious and I've never found anything like it in North America. I need to find an authentic French bakery.

If you are in town on September 17, Shake Shack is offering a one day only concrete that includes the Cronut in butter caramel frozen custard. Only at the Madison Square Park location. Sad cuz I don't arrive until the 18th.

Coffee and baked goods near downtown Century 21

I'm planning an early morning trip to the downtown Century 21, then would like to find somewhere within a few block radius to refuel with coffee and a treat. It needn't be breakfast pastries, I can eat a cupcake or big cookie at any hour.

Breakfast and lunch ideas for Halifax needed.

Not a breakfast spot, but you must go the Smiling Goat right next door to the Lord Nelson. Hands down the best coffee in Halifax.

Janes closed a couple of months ago. Try the Ardmore Tea Room or the Armview Restaurant.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - January 2013 [OLD]

That sounds like a return product, I know I bought something like it at least 2 years ago and a quick Google shows they had a PBJ bar in 2010. I believe it included potato chips as well.

Boards list

Is anyone else having difficulty accessing the Boards list? When I click on one board, I can't see the list of other boards and the only way to access a board that isn't on the "Choose a Board" list is to do a search because the "show more" link doesn't work. It's been going on for days now and it is annoying!

Strangest Starbucks Drink?

I once overheard a woman ask if the hot water for tea went through, or any where near, the espresso machines. Because she wanted tea, but was deathly allergic to coffee. Starbucks seems like an odd destination for someone with such a malady.

Before trying them, I read a comment that they could be passed off as homemade. One bite and I agreed.

I don't know what quantity you are looking to buy, but I have seen it for sale in Winners and Homesense. Pete's in Halifax or Bedford probably has it as well.

recs for tasty baked goods in Halifax?

Unless they have changed recently, Two If By Sea croissants are horrible - huge blobs of dough that aren't cooked all the way through.

Coastal Coffee on Robie Street has great muffins - Toblerone, and Peanut Butter and Jam - but only on weekdays.

Shake Shack

I'm happy to see they offer 1/2 size concretes. Those things are a billiion calories, and I always say I won't finish the full cup, yet I always do. Now if they would only do the same at the other locations. And for those who are new to SS, get in the C line if you only want cold items. The line is much faster and you won't have to wait behind groups ordering bunches of burgers with a variety of toppings. But be prepared for those in the regular line to scowl at you as you step quickly up to the counter because they don't understand the C line.

Shake Shack

In the interest of full disclosure - I've never had the hot food! But I am crazy for the frozen custard, particularly the concrete.

Shake Shack

I've been to all the NYC locations, they are all yummy, which is why I am hoping the DC location will be open in time for my visit in late May. There is a regular thread on the Manhattan thread that speaks of differences between the NYC locations, but I haven't heard any comments from those who have been in other states (or countries).

Lunch between Halifax & Digby

I can't think of anything to recommend in Digby, so keep driving. Depending on traffic, it's at least 2 hours to Halifax. Depending on when you get hungry, I suggest Union Street Cafe in Berwick, Port Pub in Port Williams, Ivy Deck Bistro in Wolfville or Cocoa Pesto at the Woodshire Inn in Windsor.

What do you like in a state other than its "proper" one? Frozen rather than chilled? Stale rather than fresh? etc.

Cookies straight from the freezer. My mother never understood how she could do all her Christmas baking, put it in the freezer and go looking for it on December 20 to find only empty containers. Peanut Butter balls, too.

Typical American breakfast foods you don't enjoy at breakfast?

Nope, not unless it is a big table and people eating eggs sit at the opposite end. I can't stand the smell. Friends and family think it is funny to try to make me ill by eating egg salad in my presence. Most breakfast/brunch menus focus on the egg dishes any way, with maybe a sad little waffle or pancake offering as an after thought, so I would rather eat a continental breakfast at home and go out for dinner and dessert.

Trader Joe's Seasonal Treats

I only get to Trader Joe's every few months and on my last visit was delighted by all the Christmas goodies. I am hopeful that on my next trip at the end of March, there will be Easter candy and treats. Am I right? Any recommendations?

Typical American breakfast foods you don't enjoy at breakfast?

Eggs are the food of the devil, I can't even sit at a table with some one who is eating an egg. The only reason eggs exist is so I can bake cookies.
