Boards list
Is anyone else having difficulty accessing the Boards list? When I click on one board, I can't see the list of other boards and the only way to access a board that isn't on the "Choose a Board" list is to do a search because the "show more" link doesn't work. It's been going on for days now and it is annoying!
Strangest Starbucks Drink?
I once overheard a woman ask if the hot water for tea went through, or any where near, the espresso machines. Because she wanted tea, but was deathly allergic to coffee. Starbucks seems like an odd destination for someone with such a malady.
Where to buy Vietnamese cinnamon?

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 3rd quarter 2011 [Old]
Before trying them, I read a comment that they could be passed off as homemade. One bite and I agreed.
Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 3rd quarter 2011 [Old]
They are the Highbrow Chocolate Chip cookie. And they are awesome.
need champagne vinegar
I don't know what quantity you are looking to buy, but I have seen it for sale in Winners and Homesense. Pete's in Halifax or Bedford probably has it as well.
recs for tasty baked goods in Halifax?
Unless they have changed recently, Two If By Sea croissants are horrible - huge blobs of dough that aren't cooked all the way through.
Coastal Coffee on Robie Street has great muffins - Toblerone, and Peanut Butter and Jam - but only on weekdays.
Shake Shack
I'm happy to see they offer 1/2 size concretes. Those things are a billiion calories, and I always say I won't finish the full cup, yet I always do. Now if they would only do the same at the other locations. And for those who are new to SS, get in the C line if you only want cold items. The line is much faster and you won't have to wait behind groups ordering bunches of burgers with a variety of toppings. But be prepared for those in the regular line to scowl at you as you step quickly up to the counter because they don't understand the C line.
Shake Shack
In the interest of full disclosure - I've never had the hot food! But I am crazy for the frozen custard, particularly the concrete.
Shake Shack
I've been to all the NYC locations, they are all yummy, which is why I am hoping the DC location will be open in time for my visit in late May. There is a regular thread on the Manhattan thread that speaks of differences between the NYC locations, but I haven't heard any comments from those who have been in other states (or countries).
Shake Shack
The website says "spring opening". It's spring! Any word on a precise date or progress at the site?
Lunch between Halifax & Digby
I can't think of anything to recommend in Digby, so keep driving. Depending on traffic, it's at least 2 hours to Halifax. Depending on when you get hungry, I suggest Union Street Cafe in Berwick, Port Pub in Port Williams, Ivy Deck Bistro in Wolfville or Cocoa Pesto at the Woodshire Inn in Windsor.
What do you like in a state other than its "proper" one? Frozen rather than chilled? Stale rather than fresh? etc.
Cookies straight from the freezer. My mother never understood how she could do all her Christmas baking, put it in the freezer and go looking for it on December 20 to find only empty containers. Peanut Butter balls, too.
Typical American breakfast foods you don't enjoy at breakfast?
Nope, not unless it is a big table and people eating eggs sit at the opposite end. I can't stand the smell. Friends and family think it is funny to try to make me ill by eating egg salad in my presence. Most breakfast/brunch menus focus on the egg dishes any way, with maybe a sad little waffle or pancake offering as an after thought, so I would rather eat a continental breakfast at home and go out for dinner and dessert.
Trader Joe's Seasonal Treats
I only get to Trader Joe's every few months and on my last visit was delighted by all the Christmas goodies. I am hopeful that on my next trip at the end of March, there will be Easter candy and treats. Am I right? Any recommendations?
Typical American breakfast foods you don't enjoy at breakfast?
Eggs are the food of the devil, I can't even sit at a table with some one who is eating an egg. The only reason eggs exist is so I can bake cookies.
Shake Shack March 2011 Flavors - Any Must-Haves?
The chocolate peanut butter pretzel sounds just like the Pretzel Concrete in the Theatre District, and the chocolate chuckles sounds like the Crunchrete at UES. It seems they are running out of ideas; they need to hire a new Flavor Developer. Where do I send my resume?
Best artisan chocolates in Halifax?
Gourmandise Avenue Patisserie. Actually, it's the only "fine" chocolate in Halifax. They have a shop at the Seaport Farmers' Market and both locations of Pete's Frootique have a small selection of their products.
What's your favorite kind of potato chips?
I discovered feta and avacado Pringles in Rome. Sadly, I have never found them anywhere else.
anyone making candy for the holidays? What are you making?
Toodie, I realize your post is a year old! but I found it when searching for Nutty Bits, which I just discovered this year. Did you have any success replicating them and, if so, would you mind sharing your recipe?
New Seaport Farmer's Market in Halifax
I went for the first time on a Saturday a few weeks ago just after 7:00 am. The parking situation was annoying, and difficult to figure out in the dark. A number of the merchants were just strolling in and still weren't set up when I left 30 minutes later, perhaps they were delayed because of the problems unloading? Thankfully, it was not yet crowded so I didn't get to see for myself how the traffic flows. This weekend, I went on Sunday at 8:30. Perhaps 1/4 of the merchants were open. I've never been clear on whether the intention is to have all, or most, vendors open on Sunday too? Certainly you would think most would be there 2 weeks before Christmas. I couldn't find anything on the website to say who was open on Sundays, and the merchants I went specifically to see weren't open.
I'm in no hurry to go back.
Lamb, Wild Boar, Midtown
I'm looking for advice for 2 meals next week, probably lunch one day and dinner another. I'll be staying midtown, but don't mind a quick subway ride to another part of Manhattan for a really great spot. I'm craving wild boar, so I guess I'm looking for a good Italian spot. I also want some great lamb, probably Indian, but I'm open to Greek, Turkish, etc, if it is strongly recommended. I'll be dining alone, and would like to keep the lunch to perhaps $30, and dinner to $50, with tax and tip but no alcohol. Well, maybe one glass of wine with the Italian meal......
If you had four days in New York before you dieted what would you eat?
Is this really a pre-diet splurge, or are you just trying to set the mood? I view my trips to New York as a break from my usually healthy diet, so i indulge my sweet tooth with mostly take-out treats as opposed to sit down meals or even restaurant desserts. I recently spent 4 days eating myself into a sugar-induced coma, and rarely touched "real" food such as a sandwich, burger or vegetable that I can make for myself at home. If that type of indulgence interests you, I recommend:
- a different concrete from each location of Shake Shack;
- Brooklyn blackout and red velvet cupcakes from Two Little Red Hens Bakery;
- chocolate peanut butter cookie from Levains:
- anything from Burdick chocolate;
- Grom gelato;
- anything from Doughnut Plant;
- cupcakes from Chickalicious;
- scones from Amy's Bread;
I think I need some insulin now....

Not to Miss Vendors at Saint John Market
Do not miss Turkans, open Saturdays only. They are on the left hand wall, at the head (uphill) of the Market. Middle Eastern flatbreads, spreads and dips. Lovely people who will insist you sample everything they sell, and it is all yummy.
Pre-Imperial Theatre dinner in Saint John
I usually recommend Beatty and the Bistro for dinner before a show at the Imperial, however, they are not open on Sundays (unless that has changed?). Can anyone recommend somewhere within walking distance?
best fish and chips in Saint John's (and surrounding area)
If you mean Saint JOHN New Brunswick, as opposed to St. JOHN'S Newfoundland, the answer is Ossie's Lunch on Highway 1 just east of St. Andrews. It's about 45 minutes from Saint John. If your arteries can handle it, have their fabulous milkshake in addition to the fish and chips.
WHERE TO FIND CHIA SEEDS IN HALIFAX !?
Bulk Barn(there may be one closer to Shelburne?), Costco, Planet Organic or any other health food store, Pete's..... In fact, I think every Superstore has it in the organic section.
Bequet caramels
Can anyone tell me where to buy these in Manhattan? Their website says they are sold in 650 stores, but doesn't list them!
American snack foods you can't get in Canada?
Green and Black Peanut Bar. We can get all the other flavours here, but not the peanut. It makes me cry.
I was delighted to discover we can now get dark chocolate, peanut M & M s in Canada, so they are off the list of junk food I bring back from the US. The Zagnut and Nutrageous bars seem to only be available in speciality candy stores in Canada, not regular convenience and grocery stores.
Help with itinerary
Yes, the coffee at Two If By Sea is pretty good, probably the best in Dartmouth (not a lot of competition) but the pastries are nasty. Eat elsewhere.
