Something like a loose meat sandwich in (Southern) New England?

As I said, no, not a sloppy joe. Sloppy joes are ground beef mixed with a tomato sauce. I'm talking about something that's got seasoning and not much else (toppings aside).

There's a whole chain of Maid-Rites in the Iowa area that specialize in this on a hamburger roll, and from what I can tell, people in Detroit eat it in hot dog buns:

Something like a loose meat sandwich in (Southern) New England?

The other day we were in the Detroit airport and ate loose hamburger sandwiches (loose ground meat on a hot dog rol topped with chili, onions, and mustard) that were the closest thing I've had to the famous Maid-Rite loose meat sandwich that I've yet come across. To clarify, I haven't yet had a Maid-Rite, but I've wanted to and this was exciting because it was in a similar vein.

Anyway, we came back and I've been dreaming of this delicious thing ever since Sunday. Is there any loose meat sandwich like this (not a Sloppy Joe -- something without the tomatoey sauce) in [Southern] New England?

German food in Northern NJ?

Lately I've been hearing ever more names of German restaurants and hofbraus around Northern NJ that aren't around anymore, further signs of the fading of this once-strong community. So what's left of this cuisine in the general area of Bergen County that's worth going to? I know Strunck's Deli and Karl Ehmer are still around in Westwood and Hillsdale, respectively, and there was a place in Pompton Lakes I'd heard of not too long ago...

Best Italian sausage around Boston?

Thanks, I must've botched my search because I checked beforehand and came up short. I'll check 'em all, and thanks for the tips on Sulmona's and Pasquale's.

Best Italian sausage around Boston?

I was just at an Italian grocery the other day looking at their in-house sausage and started wondering where the best stuff is to be had. Anyone have a favorite?

tostones?

In Costa Rica you find these called "patacones," to confuse things even further, though "tostones" is what I see around here.

Durian cake at Eldo

That just makes me think of this old Far Side cartoon:

Chilean-style empanadas?

Maybe five years ago, the Pizza Ring location in Allston's Union Square was owned by two Chilean brothers who made empanadas so good I used to get sad halfway through them that the experience was starting to end. They went out of business rather suddenly and I don't know where they ended up, and I'm tired of talking about and not eating these empanadas, so, does anyone know where I can get such a thing around Boston? It was baked with a butter-glazed crust, contained egg, olive, onion, raisin, and meat of impeccable almost sweet seasoning. The tangy minced salsa was almost even better than the empanadas. Alternatively, has anyone run into any restaurants run by a Marcelo and/or Ivan Muñoz since then? Maybe I can just get them to make me some.

Latin food in Port Chester???

GF and I were passing through the area last fall and happened upon Misti while looking for a bite to eat. Quite easily one of the best roast chickens I've had out in a long time, and very cheap. We ordered from the take-out side and actually ate it there, not realizing until afterward that there was a sit-down restaurant up the block. We've been searching for chicken as good closer to home in Boston without success so far.

Oh, and I liked their empanadas. I used to know a couple of Chileans who ran a pizza place here in Boston that made similar ones, and it was the first time I'd had one close to theirs since then. Very tasty.

Interesting mid-level dining near Westwood/Ridgewood, NJ?

Well, it finally happened -- the only Chinese restaurant I ever really liked in Northern NJ, Ridgewood's Ivangie Tea House, went out of business. They had creative, reasonably-priced, well-cooked (not well-done, but just the opposite -- vegetables were still crispy, sauces not overwhelming...) food. It was masterful.

In any case, I'm looking for new places to eat out when visiting family in that area who don't go out to eat enough to stay on top of things. Nothing too pricy -- $15-$20 an entree tops, maybe -- preferably interesting and healthy. Not looking for pub food (there's plenty around), not looking for jacket-and-tie.

So what are the best new places out there? I don't live in the area anymore, and hunting and pecking's getting frustrating.

Thanks in advance for any tips!
