Saturday Brunch 1st Weekend of Jazz Fest???

The best brunch is on the Jazz fest grounds. No need to go anywhere else with the variety of food at fest. I think the grounds open at noon and the last performance is around 5 ish. But my memory maybe wrong on the times. Regardless, why take 2 hours out of fest to go to a brunch?

Milwaukee Recommendations

There is a very good restaurant in New Berlin on Greenfield ave called Lagniappe Brasserie. I would definitely go there.

Couldn't find frozen sweetened strawberries, how to make my own? How much sugar do I use?

Have you tasted the thawed organic strawberries? I would taste them to see how sweet they are and then start by adding the sugar , 2 tablespoons at a time. Taste after the additions until you have the sweetness you want.

MKE - Help, please...Crazy Water or Hinterland for a special dinner

You're welcome. Glad it was an enjoyable experience.

MKE - Help, please...Crazy Water or Hinterland for a special dinner

Don't know if this information will impact you on your decision, Dan Van Rite chef from The Hinterland was recently nominated again and is a finalist for The James Beard Award.

MKE - Help, please...Crazy Water or Hinterland for a special dinner

The Hinterland or Crazy Water are excellent restaurants. Crazy Water is rather small, everything is prepared basically right behind the bar. A very casual bistro type atmosphere. Food is very welcoming.

The Hinterland has a large dining area with a front bar and back bar where you can eat too. I wouldn't suggest eating at the bar areas for your celebratory dinner. I find The Hinterland to be very creative with their choices. The wait staff is well versed with the selections. Chef Dan Van Rite continues to change up the menu with a Wisconsin flair. I also know that they have their seafood flown in from each coast , I think almost daily.
I have had wonderful birthday, anniversary dinners at The Hinterland. I have also had great dinners at Crazy Water.
IMO I'd try The Hinterland this time and then for the next anniversary try Crazy Water.

What mistake do you always make when you're cooking in a rush?

Recently, I used a can of pumpkin instead of a cup. I misread the recipe. I realized this when the cookie batter was way liquidy. I added more flour and and egg and just by luck , the supposed to be cookies that turned into cupcakes turned out fine.

Condiments and Eggs

What did you or your Mom make when you were sick?

My mom made jello and a beef broth for us when we were sick. White soda to settle our stomach.

I make white rice , throw in the hamburger with it while cooking. This is what my vet told me to give to my dog when she is sick. I have a Westie and they are notorious for sensitive stomachs.

MKE - lunch/quick dinner around Children's hospital

Downtown Wauwatosa is close. There are several spots for respite. Le Reve 7610 Harwood Ave., Wauwatosa (414) 778-3333 is a great bakery/cafe. The Chancery, a local restaurant that has several locations throughout SE Wi. is also located there. http://www.thechancery.com/ Hectors is a pretty decent Mexican place....http://www.hectors.com/
There is also Cafe Hollander in the village that I like http://www.cafehollander.com/tosavillage/
Mo's Irish Pub is on the corner of Hwy 100 and Bluemound .It has a an Irish Pub atmosphere and decent food. http://www.mosirishpub.com/

MKE visit

The Old German Beer Hall features all the he beers of the Hofbrauhaus in Munich. They have a polka band some nights and the servers are dressed in traditional Hofbrau attire. It is a fun place, at least it was on the nights I have been there.
Benji's is known for their Hoppel Poppel.

MKE visit

Enjoy your visit. An area of Milwaukee that I am partial to is The Third Ward. There is a new , recently opened BBQ place called The Smoke Shack http://smoke-shack.com/ I can't vouch for it but I've seen pictures and read some reviews and it sounds pretty good.

MKE visit

Agreed , they are not known for bratwurst, but I don't go out for brats unless it's at the stadium. Well, Hinterland does make their own sausage and it is very good.. And each restaurant mentioned has steak on their menus and does a great job. And I guess I took the OP's post as looking something that represents the feel of MKE. I tend to try to go against what is stereotypically MKE thus recommending something out of the box, but yet giving a visitor a taste of what Milwaukee is today.

MKE visit

I like The Hinterland for a casual but great dining experience. Their menu emphasizes Wisconsin fare. They have a small plate dining as well as fine dining . The Harbor House gives you a great view of the Milwaukee downtown from the water perspective. They specialize in seafood. Roots is a wonderful restaurant with a great view of the downtown from over the river. The Iron Horse Hotel is a magnificent boutique hotel that captures the vibe of Milwaukee. Whether you stop at Branded for a drink or go to Smyth it is a great place to see.

Fage yogurt at Aldi

I found it at the Aldi on Hwy. 100 just north of Layton in Greenfield. I asked the cashier if she knew if they have started carrying Fage. She said she thought it was a seasonal item....hmmm yogurt seasonal?
I have found that Aldi's prices and what they carry differ from store to store. My Mom who shops at a Waukesha Aldi will call and tell me that she got eggs for .89 and I'll go to the Greenfield or Brookfield store to find that they are selling them for .99 or more.

Fage yogurt at Aldi

Just wanted to let everyone know that I found Fage Greek yogurt at Aldi. I'm not sure if it's an only one time occurrence. I'm not sure if other parts of the country have had this but this is the first time I have seen it in the Milwaukee area. It's the 17.6 oz size and the price is $1.49. The cheapest I have found it before today was at the Super Wal-mart for $3.30.

looking for a gargantuan size (gallon) of vodka

I saw a huge bottle of Grey Goose at the Costco in the Milwaukee area before Christmas. I actually bought the Kirkland brand vodka in the huge bottle and it is very good. I haven't done a taste comparison to Grey Goose but I have done it with Hangar One and it is very similar. Not sure if you have access to Costco in Chicago.

Cooking Prime Steak the Right Way

A prime steak will not need and should not ever have meat tenderizer applied.

Panache 447 Plymouth-Needs sooooooooooo much work [DTW]

Thanks didn't see the title in the org post. Sounds like it is a relatively new restaurant?

Panache 447 Plymouth-Needs sooooooooooo much work [DTW]

Please let us know what restaurant this is and in what city. Thanks.

not cool whip.

From your post, it looks like your recipe call for pudding the pudding in the oven after mixing in the cool whip? Is this correct? That doesn't sound right to me.
I have made Paula Deen's " Not yo' Mama's Banana Pudding" and people have raved about it. It does call for cool whip but I think whipped cream can be used. It also calls for cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk. There is no baking in her recipe.

Standing Rib Roast ; Another Vote For "low and slow"

On Christmas Eve I roasted a prime rib roast low and slow. It was a 11.5 lb roast. Brought it to room temp,it took about two hours. I seasoned it with salt, pepper, crushed garlic and olive oil. It rested on a bed of carrots, and onions. I roasted it at 225 and it took 4.5 hours to reach medium rare.
I calculated that it would take about 5 hours to reach medium rare. I did a check with my temp thermometer at hour 4.25 and it was already at rare. I took it out double wrapped it in tin foil. It rested for an hour. In that time I did my sides. I put it back in the oven for a 500 blast for 8 min. Crust was perfect and the roast was very good. I wish I would have checked the temp earlier. I like the roast to be more towards rare, but it was still very pink and flavorful.

What's for dinner, the Holiday Edition! #120 [old]

By my decree , we are going out for a traditional Wisconsin Fish Fry. Seems like I have been in the kitchen 24/7 getting ready for the Holidays.

Rehearsal Dinner in Milwaukee

I know The Hinterland will reserve their back area for private parties.

Wine Corks

My sister makes wonderful looking wreaths with wine corks. It's not very hard to do with a glue gun. It looks really nice hanging in our bar area.

Only Foodie in the Family

I share your pain. Most of my extended family could care less whether holiday dinner is made from scratch or a mix. Don't get me wrong I think they are appreciative of my efforts but it's not their priority. I say if it pleases you and makes you happy keep on doing what you're doing.

I found a source for duck fat! (great for seasoning/frying) [Windsor,WI]

Where was it located within The Fresh Market?

Best Supermarket In USA: your nominations

Sendiks. Being I am from SE Wisconsin, most of may not be familiar with this local supermarket chain. Sendiks was a single store for years in the North-shore area; they have expanded to upwards of 10 stores or more within the last 5years. They have stiffened the competition in an area that Pick-n-Save had cornered for years and years.
Sendiks service is outstanding. Each area , cheese, meat , produce ,deli, bakery is manned with knowledgeable staff that go out of their way to help. Kind of reminds me of the way shopping used to be where you would go to the butcher, the bakery etc.
Quality is in every area. Produce is displayed wonderfully and samples are all over the store.
The prices may be a little higher but I am willing to pay more for quality and service. But I also search out deals. I frequent Aldi for certain items and go to Costco and Trader Joe's also.
